Аннотация: A design of all-optical diode in L-shaped photonic crystal waveguide is proposed that uses the multistability of single nonlinear Kerr microcavity with two dipole modes. Asymmetry of the waveguide is achieved through different couplings of the dipole modes with the left and right legs of the waveguide. Using coupled mode theory we demonstrate an extremely high transmission contrast. The direction of optical diode transmission can be controlled by power or frequency of injected light. The theory agrees with the numerical solution of the Maxwell equations. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We study the transmission spectra of a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a defect containing a four-level atomic medium that exhibits a greatly enhanced third-order susceptibility while having a vanishing linear susceptibility dependent on the electromagnetically induced transparency. Two ways of controlling the transmission of a photonic crystal are discussed: via absorption, i.e., nonlinear (two-photon) absorption of the probe field enhanced by constructive quantum interference, and via dispersion, which comes down to shifting the resonance frequency of the defect mode for the probe field by varying the refractive index based on the giant Kerr nonlinearity (cross-phase modulation). We demonstrate that such systems enable nonlinear all-optical switching at ultralow intensities of the coupling and switching laser fields.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components T-ij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: The effect of Kerr nonlinearity on the transmission of laser radiation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal has been investigated by the transfer-matrix method, modified to describe nonlinear effects. The crystal under study is a thin-film multilayer structure with a spatial distribution of the refractive index, which makes it possible to eliminate side bands in the transmission spectrum at each side of the photonic band gap and significantly increase the slope of the transmission curve. The transmission spectrum of such a photonic crystal structure has been studied for two opposite directions of laser radiation propagation. The anisotropy of nonlinear transmission is most pronounced near the edge of the photonic crystal band gap, which lies in the near-IR region. The proposed structure, having strong transmission anisotropy and sufficiently low reflection in the forward direction, can operate as an optical diode (analog of an electron diode). Аннотация: The paper presents the results of the formation and study of the morphological and structural characteristics of the mesoporous ZnO / Al2O3 nanofibers film (ZANF). The deposition of a ZnO layer on Al2O3 nanofibers film (ANF) ~ 1 µm thick was carried out by the method of atomic layer deposition. The morphology of the mesoporous composite layer ZnO / Al2O3 (ZANF) has been studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that in the process of atomic layer deposition, the ZnO layer grows according to the Stranski-Krastanov mechanism. A ZnO layer less than 5 nm thick gives an island structure in which Al2O3 nanofibers are uniformly coated with ZnO particles, an increase in the ZnO layer thickness to 15 nm demonstrates a continuous coating of Al2O3 nanofibers. The system has a core-shell structure. The resulting composite structures are promising for applications in photocatalysis and gas sensing.

Аннотация: The band structure of two-dimensional resonant photonic crystals of two types has been calculated using the expansion of eigenfunctions in plane waves. Crystals of one type consist of infinite dielectric cylinders forming a square lattice filled with a resonant gas, and crystals of the other type consist of infinite cylindrical holes filled with a resonant gas and forming a square lattice in a dielectric matrix. It has been shown that, in both cases, the dispersion of a resonant gas in combination with the dispersion of a two-dimensional structure with a photonic band gap leads to the appearance of an additional narrow transmission band near the edge of the band gap or an additional band gap in the continuous spectrum of the photonic crystal. The calculations performed have demonstrated that new dispersion properties substantially depend on the density of the resonant gas, the position of the resonant frequency with respect to the edge of the band gap, and the direction of propagation of electromagnetic waves.

Аннотация: We consider a Fabry-Perot resonator (FPR) comprised of two off-channel nonlinear defects coupled to the photonic waveguide. For the linear case FPR can support bound states in the form of standing waves between the defects if a distance between them is quantized. For the nonlinear case the bound states appear for arbitrary distance between the defects if electromagnetic intensity is quantized. For transmission through the FPR we reveal additional resonances which are the result of coupling of incident wave with the bound states because of nonlinearity of the defects. The resonances are spaced at the eigenfrequencies of bound states with a width proportional to the input amplitude. The theory of the FPR based on the simple Wang and Fan model [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066616 (2003)] is complemented by the tight-binding one. The results for the transmission and bound states in these models agree with computations in real two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two off-channel defects fabricated from a Kerr-type material.

Аннотация: Using the formalism of the effective Hamiltonian, we consider bound states in a continuum (BIC). They are nonhermitian effective Hamiltonian eigenstates that have real eigenvalues. It is shown that BICs are orthogonal to open channels of the leads, i.e., disconnected from the continuum. As a result, BICs can be superposed to a transport solution with an arbitrary coefficient and exist in a propagation band. The one-dimensional Aharonov-Bohm rings that are opened by attaching single-channel leads to them allow exact consideration of BICs. BICs occur at discrete values of the energy and magnetic flux; however, it's realization strongly depends on the way to the BIC point.

Аннотация: We show the existence of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in quantum billiards (QBs) that are opened by attaching single-channel leads to them. They may be observed by varying an external parameter continuously, e.g., the shape of the QB. At some values of the parameter, resonance states with vanishing decay width (the BICs) occur. They are localized almost completely in the interior of the closed system. The phenomenon is shown analytically to exist in the simplest case of a two level QB and is complemented by numerical calculations for a real QB.
