Аннотация: A new principle of data writing and erasing is proposed based on the exchange coupling between magnetic layers with mutually orthogonal orientations of the effective magnetization. The new method provides for a significant decrease in energy consumption. The possibility of using bilayer magnetic films of the (rare earth metal-transition metal)/NiFe type possessing unidirectional anisotropy as the media for thermomagnetic writing and erasing of magnetooptical data is studied. Аннотация: We theoretically investigate the manifestations of the non-monotonic character and anisotropic peculiarities of the correlation functions of the inhomogeneities in the dispersion law and damping of plasma waves. The following specific effects have been found: a change in the character of the modifications, dispersion law and damping for small wavenumbers; dependence of the plasma frequency shift on the direction of the wave propagation. We substantiate possibilities for developing the correlation spectroscopy of plasma waves which would enable us not only to measure a correlation radius of the inhomogeneities (this has been suggested earlier), but also to obtain information in the form of the correlation function.

Аннотация: Thin magnetic films with periodic surface topography are of special interest for microwave applications as their static and dynamic magnetic characteristics can be readily adjusted. In this paper, we explore the capabilities of a simple method for producing large-area periodically patterned films by creating regularly spaced grooves on a substrate using a diamond cutter. For 110-nm-thick films, it was found that the substrate-topography-induced magnetic anisotropy was inversely proportional to the pattern period, which in experimental samples varied from 5 to 20 mu m. Based on the Netzelmann theory, analytical expressions for demagnetization tensor components were obtained, which accord well with the experimental data. The measurements of the natural ferromagnetic resonance spectra demonstrated that the increase of the topography-induced magnetic anisotropy with the decrease of the pattern period led to the increase of the resonance frequency from 0.65 to 1.86 GHz, and to a decrease of the linewidth and effective damping parameter.

Аннотация: Dependence of the magnetic and magnetooptical properties of an exchange-coupled NiFe/DyCo bilayer system on the thickness (t (DyCo)) of a magnetically hard layer has been studied. It is established that the unidirectional anisotropy vanishes at t (DyCo) similar to 400 , while the coercive field in the magnetically soft layer becomes comparable to the exchange-induced field shift. In this case, the DyCo layer magnetization is almost parallel to the film plane, whereas a reference DyCo film exhibits a perpendicular anisotropy. A model of the magnetic state of layers in the ferro/ferrimagnetic layer structure under consideration is proposed, which assumes that a 180A degrees domain wall is formed at the interface upon magnetization reversal in the magnetically soft layer.

Аннотация: The structure and magnetic properties of thin polycrystalline films of Co100 – xWx (0 ≤ x ≤ 30) deposited by magnetron sputtering on glass substrates are investigated including those containing buffer layers of Ta, W, and Ru. It is found that films of pure Co are non-single-phase and contain hcp and fcc crystalline modifications. Doping leads to an increase in the concentration of the fcc phase and an enhancement of the texture of the (111) type, and subsequently to the amorphization of the films. The buffer layers influence to a certain extent on the depth and concentration localization of these transformations. A characteristic feature of the magnetism of Co–W films is a significant perpendicular component in the macroscopic magnetic anisotropy, which leads to a “supercritical” magnetic state. It is shown that its source is the textured fcc phase, the crystalline anisotropy of which is enhanced as a result of doping of cobalt with tungsten.

Аннотация: Solid-phase transformations at different annealing temperatures in Mn/Bi (Mn on Bi) and Bi/Mn (Bi on Mn) films have been studied using X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and magnetic measurements. It has been shown that the synthesis of the α-MnBi phase in polycrystalline Mn/Bi films begins at a temperature of ~120°C and the Mn and Bi layers react completely at 300°C. The resulting α-MnBi(001) samples have a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (Ku ≃ 1.5 × 107 erg/cm3) and a coercive force H HC ~ 3 kOe. In contrast to Mn/Bi, the ferromagnetic α-MnBi phase in Bi/Mn films is not formed even at annealing processes up to 400°C and Mn clusters are formed in a Bi melt. This asymmetry in phase transformations occurs because chemosorbed oxygen existing on the surface of the Mn film in Bi/Mn films suppresses a solid-phase reaction between Mn and Bi. The analysis of the results obtained implies the existence of new low-temperature (~120°C) structural transformation in the Mn–Bi system. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: The results of the investigation of the structural and magnetic properties of CoPd films with equiatomic composition have been presented. The films have been synthesized by vacuum annealing of polycrystalline Pd/Co and epitaxial Pd/α-Co(110) and Pd/β-Co(001) bilayer samples. It has been shown that, for all samples, the annealing to 400°C does not lead to the mixing of layers and the formation of compounds. A further increase in the annealing temperature results in the formation of a disordered CoPd phase at the Pd/Co interface, which is fully completed after annealing at 650°C. The epitaxial relationships between the disordered CoPd phase and the MgO(001) substrate are determined as follows: CoPd(110)〈1¯11|| MgO(001)〈100〉 and CoPd(001)[100] || MgO(001)[100], which are formed in the Pd/αCo(110) and Pd/βCo(001) films, respectively. According to the calculations, the first magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants of the disordered CoPd phase for Pd/αCo(110) and Pd/βCo(001) samples have close values: = –(1.6 ± 0.4) × 105 erg/cm3. A possible mechanism of the solidstate synthesis of the CoPd alloy is proposed.

Аннотация: In this work we demonstrate the occurrence of the characteristic spatial scale in the distribution of magnetization unrelated to the domain wall or crystallite size with using computer simulation of magnetization in a polycrystalline ferromagnetic nanowire. This is the stochastic domain size. We show that this length is included in the spectral density of the pinning force of domain wall on inhomogeneities of the crystallographic anisotropy. The constant and distribution of easy axes directions of the effective anisotropy of stochastic domain, are analytically calculated.

Аннотация: We present a solution for the problem of quantum electron transport through a magnetic atom adsorbed inside a break junction with paramagnetic metal electrodes. In agreement with experimental data, it was assumed that the conduction electrons experience inelastic scattering by the adsorbate due to s–d(f)-exchange interaction. The Keldysh technique was employed to obtain a general expression describing a current through the multilevel structure at finite temperatures in terms of the nonequilibrium Green's function. The use of the atomic representation allowed to exactly account for the non-equidistant structure of the energy spectrum of a magnetic atom and to simplify substantially the application of the Wick theorem for construction of the nonequilibrium diagrammatic technique for the Hubbard operators. The calculation of the current-voltage characteristics of the magnetic adatom in the tunnel regime at low temperatures revealed the presence of regions with a negative differential conductance in a magnetic field.

Аннотация: The transmittance anisotropy of a composite polymer-liquid-crystal film has been studied as it varies with the degree to which it is elongated. The composite film includes polyvinyl alcohol, the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, and the surfeiting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, which initiates homeotropic adhesion of the nematic to the surface of the polymer. It is shown that, when the film is uniaxially stretched, the transmittance of the orthogonally polarized component of directly transmitted radiation and accordingly the degree of polarization abruptly increase, reaching saturation when it is stretched to twice its length. Such variation of the film's macroscopic optical properties can be caused by an orientational-structural transition to a homogeneous configuration of the director in deformed droplets of the nematic and makes it possible to substantially improve the optical characteristics of light polarizers based on such composite media. Аннотация: Chiral magnetism that manifests in the existence of skyrmions or chiral domain walls offers an alternative way for creating anisotropies in magnetic materials that might have large potential for application in future spintronic devices. Here we show experimental evidence for an alternative type of in-plane exchange-bias effect present at room temperature that is created from a chiral 90∘ domain wall at the interface of a ferrimagnetic-ferromagnetic Dy-Co/Ni-Fe bilayer system. The chiral interfacial domain wall forms due to the exchange coupling of Ni-Fe and Dy-Co at the interface and the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the Dy-Co layer. As a consequence of the preferred chirality of the interfacial domain wall, the sign of the exchange-bias effect can be reversed by changing the perpendicular orientation of the Dy-Co magnetization. The chirality-created tunable exchange bias in Dy-Co/Ni-Fe is very robust against high in-plane magnetic fields (μ0H≤6T) and does not show any aging effects. Therefore, it overcomes the limitations of conventional exchange-bias systems.

Аннотация: Structural modulation in thin films plays a substantial role in the formation of their magnetic properties. By producing topographic patterns in thin films, it is possible to engineer their magnetic response. Here, we report on the numerical study of the relationship between structural and static magnetic properties of thin films obliquely deposited on substrates with the sinusoidal surface. 3D Monte Carlo film growth simulations show that, under certain deposition conditions, an inhomogeneous columnar morphology can form in the films caused by the shadowing effect and the rippled substrate. Calculations of the demagnetizing tensors for these films demonstrate that their columnar structure is the source of the shape-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that varies nonmonotonically with the deposition angle. Micromagnetic simulations of the generated films confirm the uniaxial character of the shape-induced anisotropy, and also show that magnetization reversal occurs via an incoherent rotation of magnetic moments.

Аннотация: The components L j of the Lorentz tensor and the polarizability density of molecules G in the smectic-A and crystalline-B phases have been determined for homologues of the series of alkyl-p-(4-alkoxybenzylideneamino-)cinnamates. The quantity L j (G) in both phases is a linear (quadratic) function of the orientational order parameter of molecules S, which is invariant (noninvariant) with respect to the A-B transition, which is manifested in the form of jumps δL j and δG and enhancement of the G(S) dependence. An increase in the length of terminal molecular chains and weakening of interlayer correlation of molecules are accompanied by strengthening of the A-B transition of the first order and G(S) dependences in both phases together with an increase in δL j and δG. Change δG and dependence G(S) in the B phase are related to change in the conformation (flattening) of aromatic molecular cores.

Аннотация: A comparative multitechnique study (including transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation, static magnetisation, magnetic circular dichroism and electron magnetic resonance) has been carried out of nanoparticle-containing borate glasses of two different types: (i) with iron and manganese oxide additives and (ii) with iron and rare earth oxide additives. Due to the presence of magnetic nanoparticles, these glasses have a nonlinear magnetic field dependence of magnetization with hysteresis and saturation while remaining transparent in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. The nature of the nanoparticles has been identified as manganese ferrite for type (i) glasses and maghemite for type (ii) glasses. The synchrotron radiation studies as well as the computer-assisted electron magnetic resonance provide an insight into the morphological characteristics of the magnetic nanoparticles in the glass.

Аннотация: A new approach has been proposed for determining an equilibrium configuration of magnetic moments in condensed matter in terms of its discrete model. The solution to this problem is reduced to a system of linear inhomogeneous equations with undetermined Lagrange multipliers. The possibility of numerically solving these systems has been shown using a modified power method. The efficiency of the method has been demonstrated for the model of a thin magnetic film with a nonuniform distribution of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy over the area. The dependence of the coercive force on the uniaxial anisotropy of nanocrystallites, their exchange interaction, and other parameters of samples has been investigated.

Аннотация: The structural transition occurring in droplets of nematic liquid crystals formed in a polymer in magnetic field is studied. The transition is caused by field-driven weakening of tangential surface anchoring and develops following two scenarios: bipolar structure/homogeneous structure or bipolar structure/radial structure. The first scenario suggests a cyclic transition occurring upon thermal fluctuations without field. The structural transition is considered within a model of the biaxial liquid crystal/polymer interface. The model describes tendency of the nematic director to align tangentially on a droplet's surface, normally under the action of flexoelectric polarization, and axially along the magnetic-field-imposed easy orientation axis.

Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Аннотация: GdFe3(BO3)(4) exhibits a structural phase transition at 156 K, antiferromagnetic order of the Fe3+ moments at 36 K, followed by a spin reorientation phase transition at 9 K. The reorientation phase transition is studied through dielectric, magnetic, and heat capacity measurements under the application of external magnetic fields of up to 7 kOe. The dielectric constant indicates the existence of two distinct anomalies at T-SR=9 K that separate in temperature under external magnetic fields. The spin rotation phase transition is proven to be of the first-order nature through the magnetic analog of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Magnetodielectric effect of up to 1% is observed at 8 K and 7 kOe. The uniaxial magnetocaloric effect along the c axis is observed below the spin reorientation phase transition of 9 K.

Аннотация: Centimeter-sized optical quality plate-like PbB4O7 crystals have been grown by Czochralski method. The fundamental absorption edge has been found at 237 nm (corresponding bandgap 5.75 eV) with the distinct sideband protruding up to 300 nm. The crystals are well faceted with the (100), (010) and (101) planes, (100) surfaces being mostly developed. The etching in diluted nitric acid (5 wt.%) at the temperature of 90 °C have been used to reveal the defect structure and remove melt residuals. The (100) surface shows the presence of etching pits and twin boundaries. The Kikuchi line pattern and developed microrelief with the roughness of ~8 nm have been observed by RHEED and AFM, respectively.
