Аннотация: Conditions for a change in the polarization selectivity of dips in the plasmon absorption spectra of fractal silver nanocomposites irradiated by pulsed laser radiation are studied. The energy thresholds of the polarization selectivity are evaluated, and the polarization and spectral threshold characteristics are compared. Mechanisms behind the correlation between the fractal structure of the nanocomposites, on the one hand, and their optical and photochromic properties, on the other hand, are discussed. Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of investigations into the temperature and spectral dependences of the magnetic circular dichroism in Dy1-xNix-Ni bilayer films prepared through thermal sputter deposition of components under ultrahigh vacuum. The distribution of the components over the layer thickness is examined by Auger spectroscopy. The nickel content x in Dy1-xNix layers varies from 0.005 to 0.06. It is shown that, in the temperature range 80-300 K, the contribution made to the magnetic circular dichroism by a Dy1-xNix layer in a bilayer film with a nickel content higher than the threshold value is approximately equal to the magnetic circular dichroism observed in an isolated Dy1-xNix film at temperatures below the temperature of the phase transition to a ferromagnetic state (similar to100 K). This phenomenon is explained by magnetic ordering in theDy(1-x)Ni(x) layer of the bilayer film due to the combined effect of two factors, namely, the incorporation of nickel into a dysprosium layer and the presence of a continuous nickel sublayer in the film. Аннотация: We calculate the quasistatic electromagnetic density of states for aggregates of touching spheres, in particular, linear chains and computer-generated random fractal aggregates. Multipole moments with orders of up to L=64 are taken into account for random aggregates with the number of particles of up to N=100 and up to L=8000 for linear chains. Extensive comparisons with the dipole approximation and geometrical cluster renormalization method are performed. Extinction spectra are calculated for several metals and black carbon. Long wavelength electromagnetic properties of fractal aggregates are considered in details.

Аннотация: We have shown within quasistatic approximation that the giant fluctuations of a local electromagnetic field in random fractal aggregates of silver nanospheres are strongly correlated with a local anisotropy factor S which is defined in this paper. The latter is a purely geometrical parameter which characterizes the deviation of local environment of a given nanosphere in an aggregate from spherical symmetry. Therefore, it is possible to predict the sites with anomalously large local fields in an aggregate without explicitly solving the electromagnetic problem. We have also demonstrated that the average (over nanospheres) value of S does not depend noticeably on the fractal dimension D, except when D approaches the trivial limit D=3. In this case, as one can expect, the average local environment becomes spherically symmetrical and S approaches zero. This corresponds to the well-known fact that in trivial aggregates, fluctuations of local electromagnetic fields are much weaker than in fractal aggregates. Thus, we find that, within the quasistatics, the large-scale geometry does not have a significant impact on local electromagnetic responses in nanoaggregates in a wide range of fractal dimensions. However, this prediction is expected not to be correct in aggregates which are sufficiently large for the intermediate- and radiation-zone interaction of individual nanospheres to become important.

Аннотация: We present an experimental spectroscopic study of large random colloidal aggregates of silver nanoparticles undergoing local restructuring. We argue that such well-known phenomena as strong fluctuation of local electromagnetic fields, appearance of "hot spots" and enhancement of nonlinear optical responses depend on the local structure on the scales of several nanosphere diameters, rather than the large-scale fractal geometry of the sample. Аннотация: The atomic and electronic structures of a set of proposed pentagonal thin (1.6 nm in diameter) silicon/silica quantum nanodots (QDs) and nanowires (NWs) with narrow interface, as well as parent metastable silicon structures (1.2 nm in diameter), were studied using cluster B3LYP/6-31G(*) and periodic boundary condition (PBC) plane-wave (PW) pseudopotential (PP) local-density approximation methods. The total density of states (TDOS) of the smallest quasispherical QD (Si-85) corresponds well to the PBC PW PP LDA TDOS of the crystalline silicon. The elongated SiQDs and SiNWs demonstrate the metallic nature of the electronic structure. The surface oxidized layer opens the band gap in the TDOS of the Si/SiO2 species. The top of the valence band and the bottom of conduction band of the particles are formed by the silicon core derived states. The theoretical band gap width is determined by the length of the Si/SiO2 clusters and describes the size confinement effect in the experimental photoluminescence spectra of the silica embedded nanocrystalline silicon with high accuracy.

Аннотация: Motivated by the experimental discovery of branched silicon nanowires, we performed theoretical electronic structure calculations of icosahedral silicon quantum dots embedded into pentagonal silicon nanowires. Using the semiempirical method, we studied the quantum confinement effect in the fully optimized embedded structures. It was found that (a) the band gaps of the embedded structures are closely related to the linear sizes of the longest constituting part rather than to the total linear dimension and (b) the discovered atypical quantum confinement with a plateau and a maximum can be attributed to the substantial interactions of near Fermi level electronic states of the quantum dots and nanowire segments. Аннотация: The quantum confinement effect (QCE) of linear junctions of silicon icosahedral quantum dots (IQD) and pentagonal nanowires (PNW) was studied using DFT and semiempirical AM1 methods. The formation of complex IQD/PNW structures leads to the localization of the HOMO and LUMO on different parts of the system and to a pronounced blue shift of the band gap; the typical QCE with a monotonic decrease of the band gap upon the system size breaks down. A simple one-electron one-dimensional Schrodinger equation model is proposed for the description and explanation of the unconventional quantum confinement behavior of silicon IQD/PNW systems. On the basis of the theoretical models, the experimentally discovered deviations from the typical QCE for nanocrystalline silicon are explained.

Аннотация: Metallic nickel nanoparticles of various sizes are formed in a thin near-surface layer in an amorphous SiO2 matrix during 40-keV Ni+ ion implantation at a dose of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The micro-structure of the irradiated layer and the crystal structure, morphology, and sizes of nickel particles formed at various irradiation doses are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The magnetooptical Faraday effect and the magnetic circular dichroism in an ensemble of nickel nanoparticles are studied in the optical range. The permittivity (epsilon) over cap tensor components are calculated for the implanted samples using an effective medium model with allowance for the results of magnetooptical measurements. The spectral dependences of the tensor (epsilon) over cap components are found to be strongly different from those of a continuous metallic nickel film. These differences are related to a disperse structure of the magnetic nickel phase and to a surface plasma resonance in the metal nanoparticles.

The dependence of the components L-j on the axial and planar orientations of macromolecules with respect to the optical axis of the film, technology of fabricating the films, and chemical structure of macromolecules has been elucidated. The correlation between the components L-j and the measured parameter. has been determined and the analytical dependence L-j(eta) for films with both types of macromolecular orientation has been established. Аннотация: Momentum-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy has been carried out successfully at the Fe K-edge for the first time. The RIXS spectra of a FeBO3 single crystal reveal a wealth of information on similar or equal to 1-10 eV electronic excitations. The IXS signal resonates when the incident photon energy approaches the pre-edge (1s-3d) and the main-edge (1s-4p) of the Fe K-edge absorption spectrum. The RIXS spectra measured at the pre-edge and the main-edge show quantitatively different dependences on the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, photon polarization, and temperature. We present a multielectron analysis of the Mott-Hubbard (MH) and charge transfer (CT) excitations, and calculate their energies. Electronic excitations observed in the pre-edge and main-edge RIXS spectra are interpreted as MH and CT excitations, respectively. We propose the electronic structure around the chemical potential in FeBO3 based on the experimental data.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a defect nanocomposite layer that consists of metallic nanoballs distributed in a transparent matrix and is characterized by an effective resonance permittivity are studied. The problem of calculating the transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra of p-polarized waves in such structures is solved for oblique incidence of light, and the spectral manifestation of defect-mode splitting as a function of the volume fraction of nanoballs and the structural parameters is studied. The splitting is found to depend substantially on the nanoball concentration in the defect, the defect layer thickness, and the angle of incidence. The angle of incidence is found at which the resonance frequency of the nanocomposite is located near the edge of the bandgap or falls in the frequency region of a continuous spectrum. The resonance situation appearing in this case results in an additional transmission band or an additional bandgap in the transmission spectrum.

Аннотация: Defect modes are investigated in a band gap of an electrically tunable one-dimensional photonic crystal infiltrated with a twisted-nematic liquid crystal. Their frequency shift and interference under applied voltage are studied both experimentally and theoretically. We deal with the case where the defect layer thickness is much larger than the wavelength (i.e., the Mauguin condition). It is shown theoretically that the defect modes could have a complex structure with elliptic polarization. Two series of polarized modes are coupled with each other and exhibit an avoided crossing phenomenon in the case of opposite parity.

Аннотация: We have studied the transmission spectra of resonant two-dimensional photonic crystals of two types, one of which consists of nanocomposite cylinders that form a square lattice in vacuum and the other of which consists of cylindrical holes that form a square lattice in nanocomposite matrix. The nanocomposite consists of metallic nanospheres that are dispersed in a transparent matrix and is characterized by an effective resonant dielectric permittivity. We show that, depending on the position of the resonant frequency of the nanocomposite with respect to the boundaries of the band gap, there arises either an additional transmission band in the transmission spectrum in the band gap or an additional band gap in the continuous spectrum of the photonic crystal. As the structural and geometric parameters of the system change, both the additional transmission band and the additional band gap are considerably modified. We analyze particular features of the spatial distribution of the electromagnetic field intensity in crystals. The considered effects can be used to extend the possibilities of creating new photonic crystals with specified properties.

Аннотация: Experimental values of the Lorentz tensor components and the local field of a light wave have been obtained for anisotropic films of polypeptide and DNA. These data indicate an increase in the mean value and anisotropy of the polarizability of biomolecules with respect to an isotropic solution. These changes in the polarizability as an indicator of the response of biomolecules to external actions, as well as their chemical and biological activity, specify the direction of the evolution of the properties of biomolecules in orientationally ordered media.

Аннотация: We investigate the effect of particle polydispersity on the optical extinction spectra of colloidal aggregates of spherical metallic (silver) nanoparticles, taking into account the realistic interparticle gaps caused by layers of stabilizing polymer adsorbed on the metal surface (adlayers). The spectra of computer-generated aggregates are computed using two different methods. The coupled-multipole method is used in the quasistatic approximation and the coupled-dipole method beyond the quasistatics. The latter approach is applicable if the interparticle gaps are sufficiently wide relative to the particle radii. Simulations are performed for two different particle size distribution functions (bimodal and Gaussian), varying the number of particles per aggregate, and different distribution functions of the interparticle gap width. The strong influence of the latter factor on the spectra is demonstrated and investigated in detail.

It is established that there are no extrema on the Cp(T) dependence, and the obtained data can be described using the Berman-Brown polynomial. The temperature variations of enthalpy and entropy are calculated from the Cp(T) dependence.

Аннотация: We have studied spectral properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a combined defect consisting of a nanocomposite layer and a twist. The nanocomposite layer is made of metallic nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and featuring effective resonant permittivity. A solution has been found for the transmission spectrum of circularly polarized waves in the structure. We have analyzed spectral splitting of the defect mode in the band gap of the cholesteric when its frequency coincides with the nanocomposite resonant frequency. Defect modes have characteristics strongly dependent on the magnitude and the sign of the phase difference of the cholesteric helix on both sides of the defect layer. It has been found that the band gap width and the position and localization degree of defect modes can be effectively controlled by external fields applied to the cholesteric.

Аннотация: We propose an optodynamical model of interaction of pulsed laser radiation with aggregates of spherical metallic nanoparticles embedded into host media. The model takes into account polydispersity of particles, pair interactions between the particles, dissipation of absorbed energy, heating and melting of the metallic core of particles and of their polymer adsorption layers, and heat exchange between electron and ion components of the particle material as well as heat exchange with the interparticle medium. Temperature dependence of the electron relaxation constant of the particle material and the effect of this dependence on interaction of nanoparticles with laser radiation are first taken into consideration. We study in detail light-induced processes in the simplest resonant domains of multiparticle aggregates consisting of two particles of an arbitrary size in aqueous medium. Optical interparticle forces are realized due to the light-induced dipole interaction. The dipole moment of each particle is calculated by the coupled dipole method (with correction for the effect of higher multipoles). We determined the role of various interrelated factors leading to photomodification of resonant domains and found an essential difference in the photomodification mechanisms between polydisperse and monodisperse nanostructures.

Аннотация: The Eu3+-doped red-orange emitting phosphor of tellurite glass 0.25Li2O–0.20Y2O3–0.5TeO2–0.05Eu2O3 has been synthesized by the melt quenching method. The amorphous nature of the glass has been verified by XRD measurements. The photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra, the luminescence decay curves have been investigated for the composition. The phosphor can be efficiently excited by the near UV light to realize the intense narrow red emission line (611 nm) corresponding to forced electric dipole transition 5D0 → 7F2 of Eu3+ ions. The Li2O–Y2O3–TeO2:Eu3+glass phosphor is a potential red-orange emitting candidate for the application in WLEDs.
