Аннотация: Kinetics of laser-induced photobleaching of fluorone dyes (fluorescein, dibromofluorescein, eosin Y, erythrosin B, Rose Bengal) is studied in a chitosan matrix. For all dyes the bleaching kinetics at the intensities of laser radiation 0.7 — 11.9 W cm-2 demonstrates quasi-monomolecular behaviour. The results are analysed using a kinetic model, based on the four-level (S0, S1, T1, Tn) scheme of the dye with chemically active triplet states taken into account. It is shown that the rate constants of the chemical reaction involving higher triplet states in the dyes studied amount to (3.9 — 18.6) × 106 s-1 and exceed the analogous values for the reaction involving the first lower triplet states by nine orders of magnitude. The rate of reaction involving the first triplet states appeared to be higher by one — two orders of magnitude than that in the case of higher triplet states involved because of low population of the latter. The possible mechanism of dye bleaching with participation of chitosan that consists in reduction of the dye to the leuco form by transfer of hydrogen from the chitosan matrix is discussed.

Аннотация: In this paper, a numerical method of retrieving the complex dielectric permittivity from the S12 element of the waveguide scattering matrix. Analysis showed that the numerical method proposed provides for the permittivity which has the error less than 10% in the frequency range from 0.345 to 15 GHz. This error is substantially less than the one attained in the existing method currently used. © 2013 IEEE.

Аннотация: A new type of nanocomposite materials based on maghemite, γ-Fe2O3, nanoparticles dispersed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron together with the larger radius element combinations: Y and Bi, or Sm and Pb, or Y and Pb is studied. Nanoparticles arise as a result of heat treatment of the glasses which gives them properties characteristic of magnetically ordered substances. Transmission electron microscopy and XRD show that only one magnetic phase, namely γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, occurs in glasses subjected to the thermal treatment at 540 °C during 24 h independently on the doping element nature. At the same time doping element and their concentrations ratio in every combination affect the particles average size and glass magnetic properties, such as magnetization temperature dependences, Faraday rotation value and electron magnetic resonance spectrum characteristics.

Аннотация: The effect of Kerr nonlinearity on the transmission of laser radiation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal has been investigated by the transfer-matrix method, modified to describe nonlinear effects. The crystal under study is a thin-film multilayer structure with a spatial distribution of the refractive index, which makes it possible to eliminate side bands in the transmission spectrum at each side of the photonic band gap and significantly increase the slope of the transmission curve. The transmission spectrum of such a photonic crystal structure has been studied for two opposite directions of laser radiation propagation. The anisotropy of nonlinear transmission is most pronounced near the edge of the photonic crystal band gap, which lies in the near-IR region. The proposed structure, having strong transmission anisotropy and sufficiently low reflection in the forward direction, can operate as an optical diode (analog of an electron diode). Аннотация: We develop the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach for open systems with Neumann boundary conditions. The approach can be used for calculating the scattering matrix and the scattering function in open resonator–waveguide systems. In higher than one dimension the method represents acoustic coupled mode theory in which the scattering solution within an open resonator is found in the form of expansion over the eigenmodes of the closed resonator decoupled from the waveguides. The problem of finding the transmission spectra is reduced to solving a set of linear equations with a non-Hermitian matrix whose anti-Hermitian term accounts for coupling between the resonator eigenmodes and the scattering channels of the waveguides. Numerical applications to acoustic two-, and three-dimensional resonator–waveguide problems are considered.

Аннотация: An effective temperature-dependent scattering matrix for a localized subsystem is obtained in the periodic Anderson model by summing itinerant variables in the diagrammatic series of perturbation theory. The effective interaction that occurs in this case can lead to an antiferromagnetic phase, a superconducting phase, and the phase of coexisting superconductivity and antiferromagnetism observed in heavy-fermion intermetallic compounds. © 2015, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Методом молекулярной динамики исследовано распределение молекул сегнетоэлектрического смектического жидкого кристалла 4-децилоксибензилиден-4''-амино-2-метилбутилциннамата в нанокапсуле с фиксированным приграничным слоем при воздействии внешнего электрического поля. Получена температурная зависимость параметра порядка (P 2) как при наличии внешнего электрического поля, так и без него. Вычислена температура перехода из смектической фазы С* в смектическую фазу A в капсуле при наличии поля. Обсуждается изменение распределения молекул и их конформации при воздействии поля.
A molecular dynamics method is used to study the distribution of molecules of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 4-decyloxybenzylidene 4''-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate in a nanocapsule with a fixed near-boundary layer under an externally applied electric field. The temperature dependence of the order parameter is obtained both in the presence and in the absence of the external electric field. The temperature of the smectic-C* to smectic-A phase transition in the capsule in the presence of the electric field is calculated. The variation of molecule distribution and molecule conformation under an applied electric filed is discussed.

Аннотация: A structure based on porous anodic alumina with through pores is synthesized. This structure may be of some interest in terms of fabricating electrically switchable membranes. Conducting tubulenes connected to a common input electrode are located in the pores of the structure. It is hypothesized that enhancement of the electric field nonuniformity associated with the indicated structure morphology should help raise the degree of ionic selectivity of the membrane and broaden the range of permissible concentrations of ions in the processed solution. An suggestion regarding the structure of synthesized tubulenes in the context of the problem of suppressing the physical sorption of ions on the pore surface and raising the hydrogen and oxygen reduction potentials relative to those of state-of-the-art field-switchable membranes is also made.

Аннотация: We report the results of investigations of ε-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles obtained by incipient wetness impregnation of silica gel. It was established that the obtained samples with an iron content of 12‒16% mass % containing ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of 10 nm on the silica gel surface exhibit a room-temperature coercivity of about 10 kOe. Along with fabrication simplicity, this fact makes the prepared samples promising for application as a magnetically hard material. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

Аннотация: Metallic nickel nanoparticles of various sizes are formed in a thin near-surface layer in an amorphous SiO2 matrix during 40-keV Ni+ ion implantation at a dose of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The micro-structure of the irradiated layer and the crystal structure, morphology, and sizes of nickel particles formed at various irradiation doses are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The magnetooptical Faraday effect and the magnetic circular dichroism in an ensemble of nickel nanoparticles are studied in the optical range. The permittivity (epsilon) over cap tensor components are calculated for the implanted samples using an effective medium model with allowance for the results of magnetooptical measurements. The spectral dependences of the tensor (epsilon) over cap components are found to be strongly different from those of a continuous metallic nickel film. These differences are related to a disperse structure of the magnetic nickel phase and to a surface plasma resonance in the metal nanoparticles.

Аннотация: Evolution of the phase state of paramagnetic additions at various stages of synthesis and subsequent thermal treatment of glasses of the system Al(2)O(3)-K(2)O-B(2)O(3) simultaneously doped with Fe(2)O(3) and MnO is studied by means of a combination of experimental techniques: Faraday rotation (FR), electron magnetic resonance (EMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Both FR and EMR show that magnetically ordered clusters occur already at the first stage of the glass preparation. In particular, for the ratio of the Fe and Mn oxides in the charge close to 3:2, fine magnetic nanoparticles are formed with characteristics similar to those of manganese ferrite. By computer simulating the EMR spectra at variable temperatures, a superparamagnetic nature of these nanoparticles is confirmed and their mean diameter is estimated as approximately 3.2 nm. In the thermally treated glasses larger magnetic nanoparticles are formed, giving rise to FR spectra, characteristic of magnetically ordered systems, and the EMR spectra different from those in as-prepared glasses but also showing superparamagnetic narrowing. The Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborates the manganese ferrite structure of the nanoparticles and indicates their coexistence in the ferrimagnetic and superparamagnetic states. The TEM shows the presence of polydisperse nanoparticles on the background of the glass matrix, and electron diffraction of a selected region containing larger particles indicates a crystal structure close to that of MnFe(2)O(4). Energy-dispersive atomic x-ray spectra confirm that the major part of Fe and Mn introduced to the glass composition is gathered in the particles, with the concentration ratio close to 2:1, characteristic of bulk MnFe(2)O(4). Magnetic hysteresis loops of samples subjected to an additional thermal treatment demonstrate a strong increase in the coercive force, remnant magnetization, and high-field magnetic susceptibility with temperature decrease. The consistent results obtained using various techniques demonstrate that the formation of nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of MnFe(2)O(4) confers to these glasses magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of substances possessing magnetic order.

Аннотация: The S matrix theory with use of the effective Hamiltonian is sketched and applied to the description of the transmission through double quantum dots. The effective Hamilton operator is non-hermitian, its eigenvalues are complex, the eigenfunctions are bi-orthogonal. In this theory, singularities occur at points where two (or more) eigenvalues of the effective Hamiltonian coalesce. These points are physically meaningful: they separate the scenario of avoided level crossings from that without any crossings in the complex plane. They are branch points in the complex plane. Their geometrical features are different from those of the diabolic points.

Аннотация: We consider a system that consists of two single-quantum billiards (QBs) coupled by a waveguide and study the transmission through this system as a function of length and width of the waveguide. To interpret the numerical results for the transmission, we explore a simple model with a small number of states which allows us to consider the problem analytically. The transmission is described in the S-matrix formalism by using the non-Hermitian effective Hamilton operator for the open system. The coupling of the single QBs to the internal waveguide characterizes the 'internal' coupling strength u of the states of the system while that of the system as a whole to the attached leads determines the 'external' coupling strength v of the resonance states via the continuum (waves in the leads). The transmission is resonant for all values of v/u in relation to the effective Hamiltonian. It depends strongly on the ratio u/u via the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the effective Hamiltonian. The results obtained are compared qualitatively with those from simulation calculations for larger systems. Most interesting is the existence of resonance states with vanishing widths that may appear at all values of v/u. They cause zeros in the transmission through the double QB due to trapping of the particle in the waveguide.

Аннотация: We discuss signatures of quantum chaos in open chaotic billiards. Solutions for such a system are given by complex scattering wavefunctions psi = u + iv when a steady current flows through the billiard. For slightly opened chaotic billiards the current distributions are simple and universal. It is remarkable that the resonant transmission through integrable billiards also gives the universal current distribution. Cur-rents induced by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction can flow even in closed billiards. Wavefunction and current distributions for a chaotic billiard with weak and strong spin-orbit interactions have been derived and compared with numerics. Similarities with classical waves are considered. In particular we propose that the networks of electric resonance RLC circuits may be used to study wave chaos. However, being different from quantum billiards, there is a resistance from the inductors which gives rise to heat power and decoherence.
