Аннотация: The method for investigation of the uniaxial and hexagonal anisotropies in weakly ferromagnetic rhombohedral FeBO3 crystals with the Fe2þ magnetic impurity with the use of the single-ion and pair approximation has been developed. In the framework of this method, a quantitative discrepancy between theoretical and experimental data on a uniaxial field has been eliminated. The energy contributions to the hexagonal anisotropy that are caused by the Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interaction, the crystal field of Fe3þ ions and the temperature dependence of this anisotropy were analytically treated. The experimental temperature dependence of the hexagonal anisotropy of FeBO3 crystals is explained. It is shown that the compensation point and the typical temperature dependence of the hexagonal anisotropy result from the competition of the contributions of Fe3þ and Fe2þ ions. It is shown that respective considerable contributions to the anisotropy of Fe3þ and Fe2þ ions are made by the cubic symmetry and the uniaxial symmetry of the exchange ‘‘single-ion’’ type. The anisotropy constants for FeBO3 crystal was obtained by using the described results. It was shown, that for the calcite type structure crystals (iron borate and manganese carbonate) with S-state ions, the single ion and pair models (which previously raised doubts in their validity and accuracy) describe the experimental data good enough.

Аннотация: The effect of layer thicknesses on the magnetic properties and mechanism of magnetization reversal in exchange-coupled NiFe/CoP film structures has been studied. The process of magnetization reversal was studied by analysis of the magnetic-induction and magneto-optical hysteresis loops. It is established that, as the thicknesses of layers in the NiFe/CoP film structure are increased, the system exhibits a transition from homogeneous magnetization reversal in the structure to exchange spring formation in the soft magnetic layer.

Аннотация: The parameters of the transition layer in exchange-biased film structures are necessary agents to understand the mechanism of formation of unidirectional anisotropy. The layer thickness in NiFe/DyCo films has been determined by comparison of signals of the polar magneto-optical Kerr effect from a reference DyCo film and a hard magnetic layer of the exchange-biased structure. The layer thickness obtained is one order of magnitude larger than that characteristic of ferromagnet-antiferromagnet bilayer films. The mechanism of magnetization reversal of the structure under study has been explained within the model suggesting the formation of 180A degrees boundaries in the interface.

Аннотация: Momentum-resolved resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy has been carried out successfully at the Fe K-edge for the first time. The RIXS spectra of a FeBO3 single crystal reveal a wealth of information on similar or equal to 1-10 eV electronic excitations. The IXS signal resonates when the incident photon energy approaches the pre-edge (1s-3d) and the main-edge (1s-4p) of the Fe K-edge absorption spectrum. The RIXS spectra measured at the pre-edge and the main-edge show quantitatively different dependences on the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, photon polarization, and temperature. We present a multielectron analysis of the Mott-Hubbard (MH) and charge transfer (CT) excitations, and calculate their energies. Electronic excitations observed in the pre-edge and main-edge RIXS spectra are interpreted as MH and CT excitations, respectively. We propose the electronic structure around the chemical potential in FeBO3 based on the experimental data.

Аннотация: This is a study of the dispersion relations and damping of spin waves in ferromagnets with inhomogeneities in their exchange and magnetic anisotropy parameters and of elastic waves in isotropic media with inhomogeneities in the density of matter and in the elastic force constants, with cross correlations between these inhomogeneities taken into account. A general behavior is found which is independent of the physical nature of the waves: the kind of effect cross correlations between inhomogeneities in any two parameters of a material will have on the wave spectrum depends on whether both parameters belong to the same (i.e., both belong to the kinetic part or both belong to the potential part) or to different parts of the hamiltonian. In the former case, positive cross correlations lead to a substantial modification of the dispersion relation and to increased wave damping, and in the latter case, to a smaller modification of these characteristics. On the other hand, negative cross correlations lead to the opposite effects in both cases. This behavior is explained qualitatively. (c) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3490860]

Аннотация: It is shown that non-Heisenberg exchange interaction should be taken into account to reproduce the magnetic phase diagram of La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (A = Ca, Sr) using only effective exchange parameters and spins. The formation of the four-spin exchange arises from carrier hopping and coincides with the critical concentration metal-dielectric transition. The two- and four-spin exchange parameters are determined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Аннотация: A many-electron model of the energy band structure of VBO3 and of Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions is proposed with strong electron correlations taken into account. Experimental optical absorption spectra and data on the resistivity are discussed in the framework of the suggested model. Variation in the magnetic and electronic properties of VBO3 and Fe1 - xVxBO3 under high pressure is predicted. For VBO3, a Mott-Hubbard (insulator-metal) transition is expected in the high-pressure phase. In Fe1 - xVxBO3 solid solutions, a nontrivial variation in the properties is predicted, leading to the appearance of a different magnetic state. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Basic experimental and theoretical results on ruthenates and rutheno-cuprates are reviewed. The electronic structure of various ruthenates and exotic superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 with spin-triplet pairing are described. The complex phase diagram of Ca2-xSrxRuO4, involving competing magnetic phases and metal-insulator transitions, is described, as are the exotic magnetic properties of Sr3Ru2O7 and of the double perovskite Sr2YRuO6, and the coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in the rutheno-cuprate RuSr2GdCu2O8. Possible applications of Sr2RuO4 and SrRuO3 are considered. The effect of strong electron correlations is discussed, and the properties of ruthenates and cuprates are compared.

Аннотация: Off-stoichiometric manganese monosulfides alpha -MnxS (1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1.25) are synthesized, and their crystal structure and magnetic properties are studied in the 4.2- to 300-K range. The compounds have a NaCl fcc lattice. Increasing the manganese ion concentration x in the antiferromagnetic semiconductors alpha -MnxS is found to result in concentration- (x(c) similar to 1.05) and temperature-driven (T-c similar to 50 K) magnetic transitions from the antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic state, with the cubic structure remaining unchanged. Аннотация: The domain structure of a diluted weak alpha -Fe2O3 : Ga ferromagnet is considered. Magnetic fields of specific amplitudes and orientations applied in the basal plane of the crystal are found to produce nonuniform magnetic states due to a periodic deviation of the antiferromagnetic vector from the easy axis of crystallographic anisotropy. A phase diagram of the modulated magnetic state with the triad axis is constructed, and a dependence of the spatial period of modulation on an external magnetic field is studied. Аннотация: The domain structure of a FeBO3 : Mg single crystal was studied with a polarizing microscope. It was found that application of a magnetic field along the hard axis in the basal plane of this weak ferromagnet gives rise, within a certain field-strength interval, to a magnetic superstructure observed against the background of the macrodomain structure of the sample. The magnetic superstructure is visually represented as a quasi-periodic system of bands oriented perpendicular to the applied field, with an alternating magneto-optic image contrast along an axis coinciding with the magnetic-field direction. The absence of sharp changes in the contrast of the magnetic superstructure image along this axis is explained as being due to the smooth variation of the sublattice magnetic-moment azimuth with spatial coordinates. The results obtained are discussed within the parameters of the instability of a uniform magnetic state of a system in the random field induced by a magnetic field. Аннотация: The effect of conduction electrons on the magnetization curve of a metallic ferromagnet with surface pinning of the magnetic moment is investigated theoretically. The electronic contribution is due to the rearrangement of the discrete spectrum of charge carriers trapped by the nonuniform magnetic induction of such a ferromagnet, and it is a kind of diamagnetic effect that appreciably decreases the volume-averaged magnetization of the ferromagnet. A power-law dependence H-3/4 on the external magnetic field H is obtained according to the law of magnetization approach to saturation. We also discuss the case of single crystals of ErRh4B4 and HoMo6S8 where magnetoresistance with the same qualitative features has been observed.
