Аннотация: Calculations of the thermodynamic quantities, and the spectra of spinons, triplet excitations, and two-particle spin-singlet (Delta S-z = 0, +/- 1) excitations for a weakly coupled antiferromagnetic S = 1/2 spin chain are made using a mean-field approximation for the interchain couplings (J(2)) by the quantum Monte Carlo method. The mass gaps in these excitation spectra are estimated as functions of the interchain coupling. The critical held H-c, and the temperatures at which the spinon and singlet gaps close (T-1 and T-2, respectively) are obtained. Some peculiarities of the staggered magnetization, the specific heat, and the spin-spin correlation function are found at T-1 = 0.9J(2), T-2 = 1.5J(2), H-c = 3.8J(2), as determined by linear function fitting for J(2)/J(1) 0.15 The intrachain and interchain couplings, and the staggered magnetization for KCuF3, Sr2CuO3, and Ca2CuO3 are estimated, and mass gaps are predicted to exist in the spectra of the spinons and the singlet two-particle excitations.

Аннотация: The spectrum of the two-particle spin-singlet (DeltaS(z) = 0, +/-1) excitations of a weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 alternating (J(1) +/- delta) chain is calculated using a mean-field approximation for the interchain exchange (J(2)) by the quantum Monte Carlo method. The bandwidth change of these excitations, the mass gaps in the singlet-singlet excitation spectrum, the top boundaries of the bands and the velocities of these excitations are estimated as functions of the alternating bond delta. The temperatures at which the singlet gaps close are determined.

Аннотация: An analog of an optical waveguide in the form of a chain of metallic nanoparticles has been investigated using modified cylindrical dielectric resonators in the microwave band. Similar to the plasma oscillations in spherical nanoparticles, the two lowest resonances of the dielectric resonator correspond to the dipole and quadrupole oscillatory modes. It is shown that a waveguide consisting of seven resonators exhibits high frequency selective properties and relatively low loss if the resonances of the quadrupole oscillatory modes are used to form its passband. The characteristics of the investigated waveguide remain almost unchanged at its bending by 90°, and the cross section of localization of the main part of the energy propagating in the waveguide is smaller than the electromagnetic wavelength by a factor of five, which approximately corresponds to the optical waveguides based on plasma oscillations in nanoparticles.

Аннотация: We report on bifurcations effect mediated by the electron-phonon coupling in a concentrated rare-earth-containing antiferromagnet, observed in the spectra of coupled 4f-electron-phonon modes under the influence of an external magnetic field. The effect was observed in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of a multiferroic easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext||c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We show that the field behavior of the coupled modes can be successfully explained and modeled on the base of the equation derived in the frame of the theory of coupled electron-phonon modes, with the same field-independent electron-phonon interaction constant |W|=14.8cm−1.

Аннотация: We report on a new effect caused by the electron-phonon coupling in a stoichiometric rare-earth antiferromagnetic crystal subjected to an external magnetic field, namely, the appearance of a nonzero gap in the spectrum of electronic excitations in an arbitrarily small field. The effect was registered in the low-temperature far-infrared (terahertz) reflection spectra of an easy-axis antiferromagnet PrFe3(BO3)4 in magnetic fields Bext-c. Both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases (including a spin-flop one) were studied in magnetic fields up to 30 T, and two bifurcation points were observed. Аннотация: In the framework of the temporal coupled mode theory we consider bound states embedded in the continuum (BSC) of photonic crystal waveguide as a capacity for light storage. A symmetry protected BSC occurs in two off-channel microresonators positioned symmetrically relative to the waveguide. We demonstrate that the symmetry protected BSC captures a fraction of a light pulse due to the Kerr effect as the pulse passes by the microresonators. However the amount of captured light is found to be strongly sensitive to the parameters of the gaussian light pulse such as basic frequency, duration and intensity. In contrast to the above case the BSC resulted from a full destructive interference of two eigenmodes of a single microresonator accumulates a fixed amount of light dependent on the material parameters of the microresonator but independent of the light pulse. The BSCs in the Fabry-Perot resonator show similar effects. We also show that the accumulated light can be released by a secondary pulse. These phenomena pave a way for all-optical storage and release of light. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We consider a Fabry-Perot resonator (FPR) comprised of two off-channel nonlinear defects coupled to the photonic waveguide. For the linear case FPR can support bound states in the form of standing waves between the defects if a distance between them is quantized. For the nonlinear case the bound states appear for arbitrary distance between the defects if electromagnetic intensity is quantized. For transmission through the FPR we reveal additional resonances which are the result of coupling of incident wave with the bound states because of nonlinearity of the defects. The resonances are spaced at the eigenfrequencies of bound states with a width proportional to the input amplitude. The theory of the FPR based on the simple Wang and Fan model [Phys. Rev. E 68, 066616 (2003)] is complemented by the tight-binding one. The results for the transmission and bound states in these models agree with computations in real two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two off-channel defects fabricated from a Kerr-type material.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical nonlinear cavities positioned symmetrically beside the waveguide and coupled with each other. Using Green function theory we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case in which the light transmission preserves the symmetry. In the second scenario the symmetry is broken by the light intensities at the cavities. In the third scenario the intensities are equal but the phases of the complex amplitudes are different at the cavities. This results in a Josephson like current between the cavities. The model consideration agrees well with computations of the Poynting current in a photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two optical cavities filled with a Kerr material.

Аннотация: We consider a microcavity with degenerate dipole or hexapole eigenmodes. If the cavity is positioned between waveguides, degeneracy is lifted. However, we show that in a nonlinear microcavity the degeneracy is recovered at certain injected power. In application we consider a two-dimensional photonic crystal of GaAs rods holding two parallel waveguides and one defect made of Kerr media. We show that 100% efficiency channel dropping can be attained without a necessity to tune the resonant frequencies of the microcavity. В© 2013 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: We propose a single resonance coupled-mode approach to light scattering by dielectric solids of revolution. By using a biorthogonal decomposition of the S matrix found with the extended boundary condition method we derived all parameters required for application of the temporal coupled-mode theory in a closed form. The proposed approach allows for constructing a frequency-dependent Fano response due to a single resonance after the full-wave solution has been found at a single incident frequency.
