Doped Mott-Hubbard materials with a low quasiparticle transparency / V. A. Gavrichkov // Phys. Rev. Аннотация: Based on the Wilson's criterion metal/insulator, extended to materials with strong electronic correlations, we have identified a specific class of the materials, which is not associated with their usual classification into Mott-Hubbard and charge transfer dielectrics. The local symmetry of these materials leads to the disappearance of quasiparticle states (so-called first removal or first extra states) in the Hubbard gap. It is especially unusual for doped materials, in which quasiparticles, being charge carriers, can disappear or appear under external factors without the Mott transition being achieved. In this work, we introduce the so-called “quasiparticle transparency”, and provide specific experiments to identify materials with the low quasiparticle transparency. A number of examples of such materials with a spin crossover under high pressure, showing the Jahn-Teller nature, are considered.

borates -- "Lu-Ban stool"-like structure -- ultraviolet transparency -- zero -- linear compressibility
Аннотация: Discovering materials that exhibit zero linear compressibility (ZLC) behavior under hydrostatic pressure is extremely difficult. To date, only a handful of ZLC materials have been found, and almost all of them are ultrahard materials with densified structures. Here, to explore ZLC in nondense materials, a structural model analogous to the structure of the “Lu‐Ban stool,” a product of traditional Chinese woodworking invented 2500 years ago, is proposed. The application of this model to borates leads to the discovery of ZLC in AEB2O4 (AE = Ca and Sr) with the unique “Lu‐Ban stool”‐like structure, which can obtain a subtle mechanical balance between pressure‐induced expansion and contraction effects. Coupled with the very wide ultraviolet transparent windows, the ZLC behavior of AEB2O4 may result in some unique but important applications. The applications of the “Lu‐Ban stool” model open a new route for pursuing ZLC materials in nondense structural systems.

Аннотация: We propose and analyze an efficient scheme for the one- and two-dimensional atomic gratings based on periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain and dispersion, which we name the Raman-induced diffraction gratings (RIDGs). There are fundamentally different from those based on electromagnetically induced transparency. As the probe field propagates along the direction normal to the standing pump wave, it can be effectively diffracted into high-order directions. The grating is a hybrid grating, i.e. it represents a mixture of amplitude and phase gratings. We identify the conditions when all high-order diffractions are amplified. In addition, we also show that diffraction of a probe field could be dynamically controlled using an additional laser field. With its help, it is possible to suppress or amplify diffraction beams. The RIDGs can be considered as all-optical multibeam splitters with amplification.

Аннотация: Half-metallic ferromagnetic materials with planar forms are promising for spintronics applications. A wide range of 2D lattices like graphene, h-BN, transition metal dichalcogenides, etc. are non-magnetic or weakly magnetic. Using first principles calculations, the existence of graphene-like hexagonal chromium nitride (h-CrN) with an almost flat atomically thin structure is predicted. We find that freestanding h-CrN has a 100% spin-polarized half-metallic nature with possible ferromagnetic ordering and a high rate of optical transparency. As a possible method for stabilization and synthesis, deposition of h-CrN on 2D MoSe2 or on MoS2 is proposed. The formation of composites retains the half-metallic properties and leads to the reduction of spin-down band gaps to 1.43 and 1.71 eV for energetically favorable h-CrN/MoSe2 and h-CrN/MoS2 configurations, respectively. Calculation of the dielectric functions of h-CrN, h-CrN/MoSe2 and h-CrN/MoS2 exhibit the high transparency of all three low-dimensional nanomaterials. The honeycomb CrN may be considered as a promising fundamental 2D material for a variety of potential applications of critical importance. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2017.

Аннотация: Intrinsic isotropic near-zero thermal expansion is discovered in borate crystal Zn4B6O13 with high transparency in the ultraviolet region. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the very low thermal expansion originates mainly from the invariability of the solid [B24O48] truncated octahedra that are fixed by the [Zn4O13] clusters in the ZBO structure.

Аннотация: We consider dynamically controllable periodic structures (gratings), resulting from Raman interaction of a weak probe field with a standing-wave pump and a second control laser field in four-level atomic media of N type. The gratings under study are induced due to periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain in a standing pump field and fundamentally differ from the ones based on electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that spectral and transmission properties of these gratings can be controlled with the help of an additional weak field (control field) by varying its intensity or frequency. Small variations of the control field intensity can change the system from opaque to transparent and vice versa and this structure can operate as an all-optical transistor. Such a structure can also be used as a tunable nonlinear mirror with amplification.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of an electromagnetically induced grating that is based on the spatial modulation of the Raman gain in the field of a standing pump wave in a three-level homogeneous medium have been discussed. It has been shown that, by varying the intensity or the frequency of the pump field, one can control the transmission and reflection spectra, while the transmission and reflection coefficients of the probe (Raman) wave can simultaneously be greater than unity. The influence of the nonideality of the standing wave on the spectral characteristics of the grating has been studied. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: A novel type of electromagnetically induced gratings based on the Raman nonlinearity in the field of standing pump waves are proposed. Unlike electromagnetically induced absorption gratings, these gratings are based on the spatial modulation of Raman susceptibility. We present a theoretical study of the optical response of such a spatial periodically modulated three-level atomic medium. It is shown that transmission and reflection of a probe Raman wave can be simultaneously amplified in the grating. Transmission and reflection spectra can be controlled by varying the pump field intensity. The basic mechanism responsible for all-optical control of transmission and reflection in the samples of Raman driven atoms are discussed. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

   PHOTONS

Аннотация: We study the interaction of two photons in a Rydberg atomic ensemble under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency, combining a semiclassical approach for pulse propagation and a complete quantum treatment for quantum state evolution. We find that the blockade regime is not suitable for implementing photon-photon cross-phase modulation due to pulse absorption and dispersion. However, approximately ideal cross-phase modulation can be realized based on relatively weak interactions, with counterpropagating and transversely separated pulses.

Аннотация: We study the transmission spectra of a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a defect containing a four-level atomic medium that exhibits a greatly enhanced third-order susceptibility while having a vanishing linear susceptibility dependent on the electromagnetically induced transparency. Two ways of controlling the transmission of a photonic crystal are discussed: via absorption, i.e., nonlinear (two-photon) absorption of the probe field enhanced by constructive quantum interference, and via dispersion, which comes down to shifting the resonance frequency of the defect mode for the probe field by varying the refractive index based on the giant Kerr nonlinearity (cross-phase modulation). We demonstrate that such systems enable nonlinear all-optical switching at ultralow intensities of the coupling and switching laser fields.
