Аннотация:
The magnetic structure of the ε-Fe2O3 iron oxide polymorphic modification is collinear ferrimagnetic in the range from room temperature to ~150 K. As the temperature decreases, ε-Fe2O3 undergoes a magnetic transition accompanied by a significant decrease in the coercivity Hc and, in the low-temperature range, the compound has a complex incommensurate magnetic structure. We experimentally investigated the dynamic magnetization switching of the ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm in the temperature range of 80–300 K, which covers different types of the magnetic structure of this iron oxide. A bulk material consisting of xerogel SiO2 with the ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles embedded in its pores was examined. The magnetic hysteresis loops under dynamic magnetization switching were measured using pulsed magnetic fields Hmax of up to 130 kOe by discharging a capacitor bank through a solenoid. The coercivity Нс upon the dynamic magnetization switching noticeably exceeds the Нс value under the quasi-static conditions. This is caused by the superparamagnetic relaxation of magnetic moments of particles upon the pulsed magnetization switching. In the range from room temperature to ~ 150 K, the external
field
variation rate dH/dt is the main parameter that determines the behavior of the coercivity under the dynamic magnetization switching. It is the behavior that is expected for a system of single-domain ferro- and ferrimagnetic particles. Under external conditions (at a temperature of 80 K) when the ε-Fe2O3 magnetic structure is incommensurate, the coercivity during the pulsed magnetization switching depends already on the parameter dH/dt and is determined, to a great extent, by the maximum applied
field
Hmax. Such a behavior atypical of systems of ferrimagnetic particles is caused already by the dynamic spin processes inside the ε-Fe2O3 particles during fast magnetization switching.

Аннотация:
A method for functional patterning of facets of a nonlinear crystal using focused ion beam milling has been developed. The near-
field
diffraction on periodic gratings has been experimentally and theoretically studied. The periodicity of the structure enables Talbot self-imaging at the fundamental and second-harmonic frequencies simultaneously. Spatial interference patterns for both harmonic frequencies are individual ones, which can enable the higher-accuracy optical testing, coupling the radiation at both frequencies, and wavelength-division demultiplexing. The impact of the aperture effect on a Talbot carpet is discussed.

Аннотация:
Chiral magnetism that manifests in the existence of skyrmions or chiral domain walls offers an alternative way for creating anisotropies in magnetic materials that might have large potential for application in future spintronic devices. Here we show experimental evidence for an alternative type of in-plane exchange-bias effect present at room temperature that is created from a chiral 90∘ domain wall at the interface of a ferrimagnetic-ferromagnetic Dy-Co/Ni-Fe bilayer system. The chiral interfacial domain wall forms due to the exchange coupling of Ni-Fe and Dy-Co at the interface and the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the Dy-Co layer. As a consequence of the preferred chirality of the interfacial domain wall, the sign of the exchange-bias effect can be reversed by changing the perpendicular orientation of the Dy-Co magnetization. The chirality-created tunable exchange bias in Dy-Co/Ni-Fe is very robust against high in-plane magnetic fields (μ0H≤6T) and does not show any aging effects. Therefore, it overcomes the limitations of conventional exchange-bias systems.

Аннотация:
Ferromagnetic insulators are widely employed to induce magnetic phenomena in adjacent layers via proximity effect. This approach could make non-magnetic materials (ranging from silicon to graphene) available for spintronic applications. Eu chalcogenides, EuO in particular, are highly efficient spin generators but suffer from low Curie temperatures. Here, experiments aimed at T-C increase in EuO by its integration with the ferromagnetic metal Gd are reported. The epitaxial bilayers Gd/EuO are synthesized on different substrates and characterized by a combination of diffraction and microscopy techniques. Their magnetic structure - established with magnetization and transport measurements as well as element-selective X-ray magnetic circular dichroism study - comprises coupled magnetic orders of EuO and Gd. EuO is robust against proximity effects - its T-C is still low, increased at most by a few tens of K. Nevertheless, the results encourage further studies of proximity-enhanced ferromagnetism to extend the range of applications of ultrathin layers of EuO in spintronics.

The interference of nonpolarized light transmitted through an ensemble of nematic liquid crystal domains formed on a polycarbonate surface has been investigated. A model based on the superposition of the ordinary and extraordinary beams passing through domains with a radial structure has been developed. Expressions for the phase difference and intensity of the interfering beams have been derived that take into account the distribution of the liquid crystal director

The dependences of the optical transmittance of a domain layer on the applied voltage have been calculated with regard to the material and optical constants of a liquid crystal and structural features and averaged morphological parameters of individual domains in the experimental sample. The specific features of magnetization in antiferromagnetic semimetals with a low charge carrier density on a triangular lattice in a high magnetic

are studied. It is demonstrated that the well-known plateau in the magnetic
field
dependence of the magnetization manifesting itself in the subsystem of localized S = 1/2 spins is actually not strictly horizontal but has a slight positive slope. It is found that an abrupt change in the frequency of quantum oscillations of the magnetization in the itinerant subsystem should be observed at the magnetic
field
values corresponding to the edges of this plateau owing to the strong s-d(f) exchange coupling.

Аннотация:
A reorientation of cholesteric liquid crystal with a large helix pitch induced by the electrically controlled ionic modification of the surface anchoring has been studied. In initial state, the cholesteric helix is untwisted completely owing to the normal surface anchoring specified by the cations adsorbed at the substrates. As a result, the homeotropic director configuration is observed within the cell. Under the action of DC electric
field
, one of the substrates becomes free from the layer of surface active cations, therefore, setting the planar surface anchoring. The latter, in turn, leads to the formation of the hybrid chiral structure. The threshold value and dynamic parameters have been estimated for this process as well as the range of control voltages, which do not allow the electrohydrodynamic instabilities. The twisted hybrid director configuration observed in the experiment has been analysed by means of the simulation of polarisation change of light propagating through the cholesteric layer with asymmetric (planar and homeotropic) surface anchoring on the cell substrates.

Polymer-dispersed liquid crystal composites have been a focus of study for a long time for their unique electro-optical properties and manufacturing by "bottom-up" techniques at large scales. In this paper, nematic liquid crystal oblate droplets with conical boundary conditions (CBCs) under the action of electric
field
were studied by computer simulations and polarized optical microscopy. Droplets with CBCs were shown to prefer an axial-bipolar structure, which combines a pair of boojums and circular disclinations on a surface. In contrast to droplets with degenerate planar boundary conditions (PBCs), hybridization of the two structure types in droplets with CBCs leads to a two-minima energy profile, resulting in an abrupt structure transition and bistable behavior of the system. The nature of the low-energy barrier in droplets with CBCs makes it highly sensitive to external stimuli, such as electric or magnetic fields, temperature, and light. In particular, the value of the electric
field
of the structure reorientation in droplets with CBCs was found to be a few times smaller than the one for droplets with PBCs, and the droplet state remained stable after switching off the voltage.

Аннотация:
Oblate nematic droplets encapsulated in a polymer specifying conical boundary conditions have been considered. Calculations by the extended Frank elastic continuum approach show that a number of various structures can be formed in such droplets under the variation of their size. Polarizing optical microscopy studies of composite film samples confirm the results of calculation and demonstrate the formation of the following orientational structures in the considered system: (i) a radial-bipolar structure with a twisted hedgehog defect and two hyperbolic boojums, (ii) an axial-bipolar structure with a circular disclination and two radial boojums, and (iii) a structure with a hedgehog defect, a hyperbolic boojum, and a radial boojum. Such a diversity of possible topologies of droplets is due to a complex balance between the energies of elasticity of the director
field
, disclinations, and anchoring with the surface, which is ensured by conical boundary conditions.

We have studied numerically the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in linear periodic chains of plasmonic nanoparticles of different shapes. The chains are deposited on top of a thick dielectric substrate. While in many commonly considered cases the substrate tends to suppress the SPP propagation, we have found that this adverse effect is practically absent in the case when the nanoparticles have the shape of oblate spheroids with sufficiently small aspect ratio (e.g., nanodisks) whose axes of symmetry coincide with the axis of the chain. © 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

We have developed a model and realized an algorithm for the calculation of the coefficient of coherent (direct) transmission of light through a layer of liquid crystal (LC) droplets in a polymer matrix. The model is based on the Hulst anomalous diffraction approximation for describing the scattering by an individual particle and the Foldy-Twersky approximation for a coherent
field
. It allows one to investigate polymer dispersed LC (PDLC) materials with homogeneous and inhomogeneous interphase surface anchoring on the droplet surface. In order to calculate the configuration of the
field
of the local director in the droplet, the relaxation method of solving the problem of minimization of the free energy volume density has been used. We have verified the model by comparison with experiment under the inverse regime of the ionic modification of the LC-polymer interphase boundary. The model makes it possible to solve problems of optimization of the optical response of PDLC films in relation to their thickness and optical characteristics of the polymer matrix, sizes, polydispersity, concentration, and anisometry parameters of droplets. Based on this model, we have proposed a technique for estimating the size of LC droplets from the data on the dependence of the transmission coefficient on the applied voltage.

Self-assembly of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots controlled solely by laser-induced interaction is demonstrated for the first time. Pairs of CdTe nanoparticles are formed under irradiation with nanosecond pulses at wavelengths 555 or 560 nm. Formation of pairs is justified by corresponding changes of absorption spectra. Conditions of the experiment are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the theory of laser-induced dipole-dipole interaction of QDs. The fraction of QDs assembled into pairs is up to 47%. We report the results of investigations of ε-Fe2O3 magnetic nanoparticles obtained by incipient wetness impregnation of silica gel. It was established that the obtained samples with an iron content of 12‒16% mass % containing ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of 10 nm on the silica gel surface exhibit a room-temperature coercivity of about 10 kOe. Along with fabrication simplicity, this fact makes the prepared samples promising for application as a magnetically hard material. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd

, the spectrum is shown to be a superposition of two Wannier-Stark ladders originating from two Bloch subbands. As the strength of the

is increased, the spectrum rearranges itself into a single Wannier-Stark ladder. We derive analytical expressions that describe the rearrangement employing the analogy between the Wannier-Stark problem and a driven two-level system in the strong-coupling regime.

We report some ac and dc magnetotransport phenomena in silicon-based hybrid structures. The giant impedance change under an applied magnetic
field
has been experimentally found in the metal/insulator/semiconductor (MIS) diode with the Schottky barrier based on the Fe/SiO2/p-Si and Fe/SiO2/n-Si structures. The maximum effect is found to observe at temperatures of 10-30 K in the frequency range 10 Hz-1 MHz, Below 1 kHz the magnetoresistance can be controlled in a wide range by applying a bias to the device. A photoinduced dc magnetoresistance of over 104% has been found in the Fe/SiO2/p-Si back-to-back Schottky diode. The observed magnetic-

The resonance motion of the magnetization of thin cylindrical and parallelepiped micro- and nanodots has been studied theoretically and experimentally. Analytical expressions for the external-

dependence of the resonance frequency of the vortex-structure oscillations have been derived taking into account the inertial and damping coefficients. The external-

dependence of the damping parameter has been found theoretically. The influence of the effective mass of a magnetic vortex on its low-frequency dynamics has been discussed.

Cr3+-activated mullite-type Bi2Ga(4-x)AlxO9 (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) solid solutions were prepared by the solid state reaction, and their spectroscopic properties were investigated in conjunction with the structural evolution. Under excitation at 610 nm, Bi2[Ga(4-y)Aly]3.97O9:0.03Cr3+ (y = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) phosphors exhibited broad-band near-infrared (NIR) emission peaking at ?710 nm in the range 650?850 nm, and the optimum Cr3+ concentrations and concentration quenching mechanism were determined. Except for the interesting NIR emission, the body color changed from white (at x = 0) to green (at x = 0.08) for Bi2Ga4?xO9:xCr3+, and from light yellow (at x = 0) to deep brown (at x = 0.08) for Bi2Al4?xO9:xCr3+, respectively. Moreover, as a result of variable Al/Ga ratio, the observed body color for Bi2[Ga(4-y)Aly]3.97O9:0.03Cr3+ (y = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) varied from deep brown to green. The relationship between the observed colors and their diffuse reflectance spectra were also studied for the understanding of the different absorption bands. The results indicated that Cr3+-doped Bi2Ga(4-x)AlxO9 solid solutions appeared as the bifunctional materials with NIR phosphors and color-tunable pigments.

Аннотация:
We report the results of comparative analysis of magnetic properties of the systems based on ε-Fe2O3, nanoparticles with different average sizes (from ∼3 to 9 nm) and dispersions. The experimental data for nanoparticles higher than 6-8 nm in size are consistent with the available data, specifically, the transition to the magnetically ordered state occurs at a temperature of ∼500 K and the anomalies of magnetic properties observed in the range of 80-150 K correspond to the magnetic transition. At the same time, Mossbauer and ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy data as well as the results of static magnetic measurements show that at room temperature all the investigated samples contain ε-Fe2O3 particles that exhibit the superparamagnetic behavior. It was established that the magnetic properties of nanoparticles significantly change with a decrease in their size to ∼6 nm. According to high-resolution electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy data, the particle structure can be attributed to the ε-modification of trivalent iron oxide; meanwhile, the temperature of the magnetic order onset in these particles is increased, the well-known magnetic transition in the range of 80-150 K does not occur, the crystallographic magnetic anisotropy constant is significantly reduced, and the surface magnetic anisotropy plays a decisive role. This is apparently due to redistribution of cations over crystallographic positions with decreasing particle size, which was established using Mössbauer spectra. As the particle size is decreased and the fraction of surface atoms is increased, the contribution of an additional magnetic subsystem formed in a shell of particles smaller than ∼4 nm becomes significant, which manifests itself in the static magnetic measurements as paramagnetic contribution. © 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Аннотация:
The magnetoresistance of the textured high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3Ox + Ag has been studied at different directions of the transport current I and external magnetic
field
H with respect to crystallographic directions of HTSC crystallites. When I and H are oriented along the ab planes of crystallites and φ is the angle between H and I, the anisotropic part of the magnetoresistance follows the functional dependence sin2φ, which is characteristic of vortex flows under Lorentz forces. The magnetoresistance R at H parallel to the c axis of crystallites (H || c) is higher than R at H || ab for both cases of I || c and I || ab. The anisotropy coefficient γ ≈ 2.3 has been estimated from the scaling of the dependences R(H) measured at H || c and H || ab. The inclusion of the magnetic
field
induced by the transport current allows scaling of the dependences R(H) at different values of I. A qualitative picture of the current flow along the c axis of crystallites in the textured HTSC has been proposed. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
