Аннотация: Three-layer iron-rich Fe3+xSi1-x/Ge/Fe3+xSi1-x (0.2 < x < 0.64) heterostructures on a Si(111) surface with Ge thicknesses of 4 nm and 7 nm were grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Systematic studies of the structural and morphological properties of the synthesized samples have shown that an increase in the Ge thickness causes a prolonged atomic diffusion through the interfaces, which significantly increases the lattice misfits in the Ge/Fe3+xSi1-x heterosystem due to the incorporation of Ge atoms into the Fe3+xSi1-x bottom layer. The resultant lowering of the total free energy caused by the development of the surface roughness results in a transition from an epitaxial to a polycrystalline growth of the upper Fe3+xSi1-x. The average lattice distortion and residual stress of the upper Fe3+xSi1-x were determined by electron diffraction and theoretical calculations to be equivalent to 0.2 GPa for the upper epitaxial layer with a volume misfit of -0.63% compared with a undistorted counterpart. The volume misfit follows the resultant interatomic misfit of |0.42|% with the bottom Ge layer, independently determined by atomic force microscopy. The variation in structural order and morphology significantly changes the magnetic properties of the upper Fe3+xSi1-x layer and leads to a subtle effect on the transport properties of the Ge layer. Both hysteresis loops and FMR spectra differ for the structures with 4 nm and 7 nm Ge layers. The FMR spectra exhibit two distinct absorption lines corresponding to two layers of ferromagnetic Fe3+xSi1-x films. At the same time, a third FMR line appears in the sample with the thicker Ge. The angular dependences of the resonance field of the FMR spectra measured in the plane of the film have a pronounced easy-axis type anisotropy, as well as an anisotropy corresponding to the cubic crystal symmetry of Fe3+xSi1-x, which implies the epitaxial orientation relationship of Fe3+xSi1-x (111)[0-11] || Ge(111)[1-10] || Fe3+xSi1-x (111)[0-11] || Si(111)[1-10]. Calculated from ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) data saturation magnetization exceeds 1000 kA/m. The temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity of a Ge layer with thicknesses of 4 nm and 7 nm is of semiconducting type, which is, however, determined by different transport mechanisms.

Аннотация: It is shown that the intersite Coulomb interaction of electrons in a topological insulator leads to the splitting of the initial energy structure and to the induction of two bands of fluctuation states. As a result, the total spectrum of Fermi excitations of the topological insulator has a four-band structure. The dielectric gap is determined by the energy interval between the bottom of the band of fluctuation states of conduction electrons and the top of the valence band of fluctuation states. Since the band of fluctuation states is narrow, quasiparticles with different effective masses appear.

Аннотация: A polarization microscopy method to investigate the orientational structures and boojums formed in the chiral and achiral nematic layers under conical (tilted) boundary conditions has been developed. Oblique light incidence on nematic layer is used, due to which the phase difference between the ordinary and extraordinary waves depends on the director’s azimuthal angle. The phase difference gets maximal when the director azimuthal angle of achiral nematic φ(x,y)=0 and an azimuthal angle at the center of the chiral nematic layer φ0(x,y)=0 independently of the total twist angle φTOTAL. It has been found that the m=+1 boojums with the phase ξ=±90° and ξ=(−90°+φTOTAL/2) are formed in achiral and chiral nematics, respectively, at the director tilt angle θd/2≅40° at the interface. In addition, the defectless structure of chiral nematic with the periodically variable azimuthal director angle on the substrates has been studied.

Аннотация: Sentinel-1 is currently the only synthetic-aperture radar, which radar measurements of the earth’s surface to be carried out, regardless of weather conditions, with high resolution up to 5–40 m and high periodicity from several to 12 days. Sentinel-1 creates a technological platform for the development of new globally remote sensing algorithms of soil moisture, not only for hydrological and climatic model applications, but also on a single field scale for individual farms in precision farming systems used. In this paper, the potential of soil moisture remote sensing using polarimetric Sentinel-1B backscattering observations was studied. As a test site, the fallow agricultural field with bare soil near the Minino village (56.0865°N, 92.6772°E), Krasnoyarsk region, the Russian Federation, was chosen. The relationship between the cross-polarized ratio, reflectivity, and the soil surface roughness established Oh used as a basis for developing the algorithm of soil moisture retrieval with neural networks (NNs) computational model. Two NNs is used as a universal regression technique to establish the relationship between scattering anisotropy, entropy and backscattering coefficients measured by the Sentinel-1B on the one hand and reflectivity on the other. Finally, the soil moisture was found from the soil reflectivity in solving the inverse problem using the Mironov dielectric model. During the field campaign from 21 May to 25 August 2020, it was shown that the proposed approach allows us to predict soil moisture values in the layer thickness of 0.00–0.05 m with the root-mean-square error and determination coefficient not worse than 3% and 0.726, respectively. The validity of the proposed approach needs additional verification on a wider dataset using soils of different textures, a wide range of variations in soil surface roughness, and moisture.

Аннотация: Dependence of the director tilt angle of nematic liquid crystal (LC) under conical anchoring from the two-component polymer mixture composition has been studied. We varied the ratio of poly(isobutyl methacrylate) (PiBMA), which specifies a conical anchoring for the nematic liquid crystal LN-396, and poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) assigning a tangential alignment for the same nematic. An oblique incidence light technique to determine a tilt angle has been used. It has been shown that the tilt angle increases from 0∘ to 47.7∘ when PiBMA:PMMA ratio changes in the range 30:70 to 100:0. The specific optical textures viewed under the polarizing microscope and proper orientational structures have been considered for various compositions of the polymer films. An electric field action on the formed orientational structures has been investigated. The obtained results are promising for the application in various electro-optical LC devices with a conical anchoring in which the director tilt angle is a crucial parameter: a controlled diffraction gratings, an electrically operated achromatic rotators of linear light polarization, etc.

Аннотация: В данной работе был изучен процесс восстановления растворов Ag (I) цитратными комплексами Fe (II), который позволяет получать наночастицы серебра с высокой стабильностью и концентрацией более 60 г/л. В ходе работы было установлено влияние скорости введения, скорости перемешивания, концентрации реагентов, рН среды и некоторых постсинтетических операций на средний размер наночастиц. Показано, что снижение концентрации Ag (I) и повышение концентрации стабилизатора, доведение рН реакционной среды до 7 позволяют получать наиболее мелкие и однородные частицы. В результате были найдены оптимальные условия, которые дали возможность уменьшить размер частиц и вместе с тем снизить концентрацию реактивов на 33 %. По данным РФЭС, ПЭМ, DLS и ИК были получены наночастицы металлического серебра с размером 6.5±1.8 нм, стабилизированные продуктом частичного распада цитрат-иона.
The reaction of reduction solution of Ag (I) by Fe (II) citrate complex was studied herein. This allows you to receive silver nanoparticles with high stability with a concentration above 60 g/l. It was determined that the nanoparticles size depends on the injection rate, mixing rate, reagent concentration, pH and some post-synthetic operations on the average size of nanoparticles. It was shown that decreasing the concentration of Ag (I) and increasing the concentration of stabilizer also bringing pH to 7 lead to small and uniform particles. Optimal conditions were found that made it possible to reduce particle size and reduce the concentration of reagents by 33 % in the results. According to XPS, TEM, DLS and FTIR datas, nanoparticles of metallic silver with a size of 6.5±1.8 nm were obtained, which stabilized by the product of partial decay of the citrate ion.

Аннотация: Based on the results of in situ electron diffraction study of the solid-state reaction and electrical resistivity measurements on the Al/Ag thin films with an atomic ratio of Al : Ag = 1 : 3, the temperature of the reaction onset has been established and a model of the structural phase transitions has been proposed. The solid-state reaction begins at 70°C with the formation of the Al–Ag solid solution at the interface between the aluminum and silver nanolayers. It has been found that, in the course of the reaction, the intermetallic compounds γ-Ag2Al → μ-Ag3Al are successively formed. It is shown that the possibility of the formation of the μ‑Ag3Al phase during the solid-state reaction in the Al/Ag thin films depends on the aluminum-to-silver ratio, while the formation of the μ-Ag3Al phase begins only after all fcc aluminum has reacted.

Аннотация: In this study, a new approach to identify the freeze/thaw states of tundra topsoil was developed based on the polarization ratio index, which was calculated from the reflectivity values of soil. Reflectivity was estimated from radiometric measurements of the SMAP satellite using the values of vertical polarization brightness temperature measured by the AMSR-2 radiometer at 6.9 GHz; this value was used to characterize the effective temperature of the soil. The proposed approach was tested using weather station data on soil surface temperatures for six test sites located in the North Slope of Alaska and the Yamal Peninsula collected from April 2015 to June 2018. The modified polarization ratio index, calculated from values of reflectivity rather than from brightness temperatures, significantly improved the possibility of determining the reference values of the index in the winter and in the summer. During testing, the modified index showed a good correlation between the dates of transition through the threshold level and soil temperature transition through 0ºC, as recorded at meteorological stations.

Аннотация: Orientational structures formed in cholesteric droplets with homeotropic surface anchoring have been studied by means of polarization optical microscopy and computer simulations. It has been found that, when the ratio of the size of droplets to the pitch of a cholesteric helix ranges from 1.4 to 2.9, an axisymmetric toroidal cholesteric structure is formed with a topological linear defect in the form of an equatorially located surface ring. The features of the toroidal structure in cholesteric droplets and their optical textures for various observation schemes are examined in detail.

Аннотация: A method for determining magnetic anisotropy parameters of a thin single-crystal film on vicinal (111) substrate as well as substrate miscut angles from angular dependence of ferromagnetic resonance field has been proposed. The method is based on the following: (i) a new approach for the solution of the system of nonlinear equations for equilibrium and resonance conditions; (ii) a new expression of the objective function for the fitting problem. The study of the iron silicide films grown on vicinal Si(111) substrates with different miscut angles confirmed the efficiency of the method. The proposed method can be easily generalized to determine parameters of single-crystal films grown on substrates with an arbitrary cut.

Аннотация: In this paper, the method previously proposed in earlier work for measuring the temperature profile in a frozen topsoil using multiangular brightness temperature observations in the L-band has been experimentally tested. At a frequency of 1.4 GHz, full-polarization multiangular brightness temperature data were obtained from the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite land product of Level 1C, with the SMOS footprint being centered at the Toolik Field Station (TFS), Alaska. The SMOS data covered the period from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011. Retrieval of the temperature profiles in a frozen topsoil was based on the semiempirical emission model L-MEB and the temperature-dependent dielectric model for an organic-rich tundra soil. The soil samples measured to develop the dielectric model were collected at the TFS site. For winter seasons, the retrieved temperature profiles in the 16.0-cm topsoil were validated relative to the temperature profiles measured in situ. As a result, the values of root-mean-square error and determination coefficient of the temperatures retrieved at the depths of 0.6, 8.7, and 16.0 cm, relative to the respective temperatures measured in situ, were found to be 2.8 °C, 4.9 °C, and 6.4 °C and 0.62, 0.42, and 0.26, respectively. The sources of error and possible improvements of the proposed retrieving algorithm were discussed. The major result of this study is the demonstration of the potential possibility for remote sensing of the temperature profile in a frozen arctic topsoil using the SMOS multiangular brightness data.

Аннотация: We have reported on the results of a complex investigation of iron disilicide FeSi2 using characteristic electron energy loss spectroscopy, inelastic electron scattering cross section spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It has been shown that the main peak in the spectra of inelastic electron scattering for FeSi2 is a superposition of two unresolved peaks, viz., surface and bulk plasmons. An analysis of the fine structure of the spectra of inelastic electron scattering cross section by their decomposition into Lorentzlike Tougaard peaks has made it possible to quantitatively estimate the contributions of individual energy loss processes to the resulting spectrum and determine their origin and energy. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: A new type of magnetic nanoparticles was revealed in borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and gadolinium. Structure and magnetic properties of the particles differ essentially from that of the α-Fe2O3, γ-Fe2O3, or Fe3O4 nanoparticles which were detected earlier in similar glass matrices. Transmission electron microscopy including STEM-HAADF and EDX, synchrotron radiation-based XRD, static magnetic measurements, magnetic circular dichroism, and electron magnetic resonance studies allow referring the nanoparticles to the iron oxide phase-ε-Fe2O3. Analysis of the data set has shown that it is Gd atoms that govern the process of nanoparticles' nucleation and its incorporation into the particles in different proportions can be used to adjust their magnetic and magneto-optical characteristics. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Аннотация: In this theoretical paper, we propose a method for measuring the temperature profile in the active topsoil of the Arctic tundra using observations of the brightness temperature for two different polarizations of the radiation at frequencies of 1.4, 6.93, 7.3, and 10.7 GHz. A multifrequency physical model of microwave emission of bare soil, a dielectric model of the Arctic tundra soil, and temperature profiles, which were measured in the active topsoil at the Toolik field station on the Alaska North Slope, were used to calculate the observed values of the brightness temperature. Temperature profiles were retrieved from the observed values of the brightness temperature in the approximation of a piecewise-linear profile of topsoil temperature during 2010–2011. Correlation analysis of the temperature profiles measured at the Toolik station and retrieved from the radiometric data has shown that in winter the error of measurement of the soil temperature at depths of 0.6 and 16.0 cm in terms of the variance (correlation coefficient) does not exceed 2.3 (0.98) and 7.2 (0.62°C), respectively. In summer, the error of measurement of the soil temperature using the radiometric method is two times less than in winter.

Аннотация: The magnetic anisotropy of 10 nm iron films deposited in an ultra high vacuum on the Si(001) surface and on the Si(001) over caped by 1.5 nm layer of SiO2 was investigated. There is in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy caused by oblique sputtering in the Fe films on a SiO2 buffer layer. The easy magnetization axis is always normal to the atomic flux direction but the value of the anisotropy field is different depending on the axial angle among sputtering direction and the substrate crystallographic axes. It is argued that the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy results from elongated surface roughness formation during film deposition. Several easy magnetization axes are found in Fe/Si(001) film without the SiO2 buffer layer. The mutual orientation of the main easy axes and Si crystallographic axes indicates that there is epitaxial growth of Fe/Si(001) film with the following orientation relative to the substrate: Fe[100] ?Si[110]. The anisotropy energy of Fe/Si(001) film is estimated by simulation of angle dependence of remnant magnetization m r as the sum of the mr angle plot from uniaxial anisotropy (induced by oblique deposition) and the polar plot from biaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Аннотация: The magnetic properties of the superparamagnetic ferrihydrite nanoparticles that form as a result of the vital activity of Klebsiella oxytoca bacteria are studied. Both an initial powder with an average number of iron atoms N Fe ∼ 2000–2500 in a particle and this powder after annealing at 140°C for 3 h in air are investigated. The following substantial modifications of the magnetic properties of the ferrihydrite nanoparticles are detected after annealing: the superparamagnetic blocking temperature increases from 23 to 49.5 K, and the average magnetic moment of a particle increases (as follows from the results of processing of magnetization curves). The particles have antiferromagnetic ordering, and the magnetic moment resulting in the superparamagnetism of the system appears due to random spin decompensation inside the particle. For this mechanism, the number of uncompensated spins is proportional to the number of magnetically active atoms raised to the one-half power, and this relation holds true for the samples under study at a good accuracy. The possible causes of the detected shift of magnetic hysteresis loops at low temperatures upon field cooling are discussed.

Аннотация: Light transmission through a Fabry–Perot resonator (FPR) holding a dielectric cylinder rod is considered. For the cylinder parallel to mirrors of the FPR and the mirrors mimicked by the δ functions we present an exact analytical theory. It is shown that light transmits only for resonant incident angles, αm, similar to the empty FPR. However after transmission the light scatters into different resonant angles, αm′ , performing resonant angular conversion. We compare the theory with experiment in the FPR, exploring multilayer films as the mirrors and glass cylinder with diameter coincided with the distance between the FPR mirrors. The measured values of angular light conversion agree qualitatively with the theoretical results.

Аннотация: The modification of the spectrum and damping of bulk plasma waves due to three-dimensional random inhomogeneities of the density of a degenerate electron gas in a conductor have been investigated using the averaged Green’s function method. The dependences of the frequency and damping of the averaged plasma waves, as well as the position ν m and width Δν of the peak of the imaginary part of the Fourier trans-form of the averaged Green’s function, on the wave vector k have been determined in the self-consistent approximation, which makes it possible to take into account multiple scattering of plasma waves by inhomogeneities. It has been found that, in the long-wavelength region of the spectrum, the decrease revealed in the frequency of the plasma waves is caused by the inhomogeneities, which agrees qualitatively with the behavior of the position of the peak ν m . In the range of large values of the correlation length of inhomogeneities and small values of k, the damping of the plasma waves tends to zero, whereas the width of the peak Δν remains finite, which is due to the nonuniform broadening. A comparison with the data of numerical calculations has been performed.

Аннотация: Carbon nanotubes decorated with transition metal, in particular, scandium, titanium, and vanadium, atoms offer promise for use in various applied science fields. We report the results of quantum-chemical calculations of the structure of the metallic layer of atoms of these metals coating the surface of (9, 0) and (10, 0) carbon nanotubes. It was shown that uniform one-layer coating by scandium and titanium could form on nanotubes with diameters no less than the diameter of (10, 0) nanotubes. Vanadium atoms could not uniformly cover nanotubes irrespective of their diameters.

Аннотация: The feasibility of determining the elemental composition, chemical state, and element distribution across the depth in a subsurface region using the computer simulation of the electron inelastic scattering cross section is demonstrated with iron layers on silicon substrates. Analysis is carried out based on the dielectric theory and on the experimental determination of the product of the electron inelastic mean free path by the inelastic scattering cross section from reflected electron energy loss spectra.
