Аннотация: EuAl4 is a rare-earth intermetallic in which competing itinerant and/or indirect exchange mechanisms give rise to a complex magnetic phase diagram, including a centrosymmetric skyrmion lattice. These phenomena arise not in the tetragonal parent structure but in the presence of a charge-density wave (CDW), which lowers the crystal symmetry and renormalizes the electronic structure. Microscopic knowledge of the corresponding atomic modulations and their driving mechanism is a prerequisite for a deeper understanding of the resulting equilibrium of electronic correlations and how it might be manipulated. Here, we use synchrotron single-crystal x-ray diffraction, inelastic x-ray scattering, and lattice-dynamics calculations to clarify the origin of the CDW in EuAl4. We observe a broad softening of a transverse acoustic phonon mode that sets in well above room temperature and, at TCDW = 142 K, freezes out in an atomic displacement mode described by the superspace group Immm(00γ )s00. In the context of previous work, our observation is a clear confirmation that the CDW in EuAl4 is driven by electron-phonon coupling. This result is relevant for a wider family of BaAl4 and ThCr2Si2- type rare-earth intermetallics known to combine CDW instabilities and complex magnetism.

Аннотация: Luminous marine bacteria are traditionally used as a bioassay due to the convenience and high rate of registering the intensity of their physiological function – luminescence. This study aimed to develop the application of Photobacterium phosphoreum in traditional and novel fields – toxicity monitoring and biotechnology. We demonstrated (1) effects of selenite ions on bioluminescence, and (2) biotransformation of selenite to selenium(0) in the form of nanoparticles. The effects of selenite (SeO32−) on the intensity of bacterial bioluminescence were studied, and its dependencies on exposure time and concentration of Na2SeO3 were analyzed. Bioluminescence activation and inhibition were revealed; dose–effect dependencies corresponded to the hormesis model. The toxicity of SeO32− was characterized by an effective concentration of 10−3 M. Effects of SeO32− on reactive oxygen species (ROS) in bacterial suspensions were studied. High positive correlations were found between the bioluminescence intensity and ROS content, which indicates the decisive role of ROS and associated redox processes in the bioeffects of selenite ions. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed the presence of nano-structures in the bacteria exposed to selenite. The energy dispersion spectrum detected a high content of selenium in the nanoparticles. The particle size distribution depended on Na2SeO3 concentration; maxima of the distribution varied within 45–55 nm.

Аннотация: Controlled drug delivery is one of the frontier areas of science, which uses an interdisciplinary approach. The delivery systems offer numerous advantages over conventional dosage forms, such as improved efficacy and patient compatibility, reduced toxicity, and ease of use. Such systems often use micro- and nanoparticles as carriers for drugs, the prolonged effect of which is achieved due to the controlled slow release of the encapsulated drug. This study investigated the effects of encapsulation of various antiseptics (brilliant green, miramistin, and furacilin) and the chemical composition of the polymer on the yield, structure, size, drug release kinetics, and antibacterial activity of microparticles produced from resorbable polyesters of microbiological origin, polyhydroxyalkanoates. Microparticles with a 5.6–94.8 μm diameter were produced. The form of the active substance molecule has been found to be the most significant factor affecting the characteristics of polyhydroxyalkanoate microparticles. The surface structure of particles is rather determined by the chemical composition of the polymer, and the release kinetics to the model medium depends on the encapsulated drug. Microparticles based on PHAs loaded with brilliant green and furacilin showed antibacterial effects in S. aureus and E. coli cultures. The study demonstrated that microparticles with antiseptics encapsulated in them have potential as prolonged drug delivery systems and are of interest for further research.Технология контролируемой доставки лекарств является одной из передовых областей науки, включающей междисциплинарный научный подход. Эти системы доставки обладают многочисленными преимуществами по сравнению с обычными лекарственными формами, такими как повышенная эффективность и биосовместимость, сниженная токсичность и простота использования. В таких системах в качестве носителей лекарственных средств часто используют микро- и наночастицы, пролонгированное действие которых достигается за счет контролируемого медленного высвобождения инкапсулированного лекарственного средства. В данном исследовании изучалось влияние включения различных антисептиков (бриллиантовый зелёный, мирамистин и фурацилин), а также химического состава полимера на выход, структуру, размер, кинетику высвобождения лекарственных средств и антибактериальную активность микрочастиц, полученных из резорбируемых полиэфиров микробиологического происхождения, полигидроксиалканоатов. Было получено семейство микрочастиц диаметром 5,6–94,8 мкм. Установлено, что наиболее значимым фактором, влияющим на характеристики микрочастиц полигидроксиалканоатов, является форма молекулы активного вещества. Структура поверхности частиц больше зависит от химического состава полимера, а кинетики выхода в модельную среду – от инкапсулированного лекарства. Микрочастицы на основе ПГА с депонированными бриллиантовым зеленым и фурацилином показали антибактериальное действие в культурах S. aureus и E. coli. Результаты продемонстрировали, что микрочастицы с депонированными антисептиками обладают потенциалом в качестве систем пролонгированной доставки и представляют интерес для дальнейших исследований.

Аннотация: Представлены результаты исследования микроструктуры и магнитных свойств наноструктурированных покрытий из высоко энтропийных сплавов FeCoNi(P)-Me (Me = Zn, Zr, W), синтезированных методом химического осаждения. Фазово-структурное состояние покрытий исследовано методами рентгеновской дифракции и электронной микроскопии. Магнитные характеристики синтезированных материалов (намагниченность насыщения, коэрцитивная сила, поле локальной анизотропии), исследованы как функции содержания Zn, Zr или W в сплаве FeCoNi(P)-Me. Магнитные свойства обсуждаются в рамках модели случайной магнитной анизотропии. Определены граничные значения энтропии и энтальпии смешения, способствующие формированию неупорядоченного твердого раствора при получении высокоэнтропийных сплавов на основе FeCoNi(P) методом химического осаждения.

Аннотация: Due to their unique properties, organosols of silver nanoparticles are widely used in optical and semiconductor devices, to produce electrically and thermally conductive films, as catalysts, antibacterial materials, etc. This work proposes a simple and highly productive method for the preparation of silver organosols, which have a metal concentration as high as 1800 g/L and contain spherical nanoparticles with low polydispersity and a median size of 9.1 nm. The method consists in the initial preparation of silver nanoparticle hydrosols with a concentration of higher than 30 g/L followed by the transfer of the NPs into an organic phase of o-xylene. A set of physical research methods has been employed to study the regularities of the extraction of silver nanoparticles with o-xylene in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethanol and to determine the optimal process conditions, under which the extraction degree is as high as 62.5%. It has been found that bromine anions contained in CTAB molecules cause the aggregation of some amount of silver nanoparticles with the formation of silver metal sediment in the aqueous phase. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data, the sediment contains bromide ions (up to 4 at %) on the particle surface. Organosols synthesized under optimal conditions are stable for more than 7 months and withstand repeated cycles of drying and redispersing. Silver organosols have been used to obtain metal films with an electrical conductivity of about 68 500 S/cm, which increases to 412 000 and 509 500 S/cm (87.8% of the electrical conductivity of bulk silver) after thermal treatment at 150 and 250°C, respectively.

Аннотация: Structural transformations of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) go through a complex energy landscape with multiple intermediate states. Although the transformations allow controlling the functional properties of the MOFs, an imbalance between MOF flexibility and rigidity sets a fundamental barrier to achieving fast and multiple transformations. Here, we study the stimuli-responsive structural transformation in a 2D MOF assembled from paddle-wheel secondary building units joined by a semi-flexible organic ligand with 1,2,4-triazole and carboxylate groups with a rigid adamantane cage between them. The structure results in a distinctive combination of MOF flexibility and rigidity, thus, facilitating a continuous transformation driven by laser light. We reveal the laser-induced anisotropic thermal expansion nature of such transformation, initiating optical changes of the 2D MOF. The latter is utilized for fast and highly repeatable optical modulation of over 10,000 cycles. The endurance of such a 2D MOF-based optical modulator during 1 year of storage at ambient conditions paves the way to design tunable and robust MOFs for diverse applications.

Аннотация: A procedure has been proposed for producing ceramic substrates for filtration membranes based on a narrow fraction of fine fly ash microspheres using cold uniaxial pressing followed by high-temperature firing. It has been shown that increasing the sintering temperature from 1000 to 1150°C leads to a decrease in open porosity from 40 to 24%, a decrease in the average pore size from 1.60 to 0.34 μm, and an increase in the compressive strength from 9.5 to 159 MPa. The resulting substrates are characterized by water permeability values of 1210, 310, 240, 170 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 at sintering temperatures of 1000, 1050, 1100 and 1150°C, respectively. Experiments on filtration of aqueous suspensions of fine microspheres (dav = 2.5 µm) and microsilica (dav = 1.9 μm) through a substrate produced at a sintering temperature of 1150°C have shown the rejection close to 100%. The proposed methodology for using ash waste in the production of membrane materials promotes the development of technologies for the integrated processing of thermal energy waste.

Аннотация: A series of single crystals of Ni3-xCoxB2O6 compounds with the kotoite structure and with different concentrations of transition metal ions (x = 0; 0,19; 0,6; 0,93; 2) were obtained. The lattice parameters and atomic coordinates were determined using X-ray diffraction. The theoretical calculations using the WIEN2k package predict that nickel ions tend to occupy the 4f crystallographic position, while cobalt ions tend to occupy the 2a crystallographic positions. The study of the diffuse scattering spectra and comparison of the Racah parameters for the compounds Ni3B2O6 and Co2NiB2O6 provides experimental evidence that the nickel ions occupy crystallographic position 4f.

Аннотация: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy for manganite films of various compositions and morphologies has been studied in the range of 1.2–3.7 eV. The primary focus was on the temperature behavior of the MCD spectra, as well as the magnetization and resistivity of the films. The data obtained were analyzed in comparison with magneto-optical spectroscopy of the Kerr rotation (KR) on both single crystal and thin film of manganites. It has been established that the MCD response at 2.3 eV is typical for manganites transitioning into a conducting state. Consequently, it reflects a change in the band structure of the material. This response is also observed in the KR spectrum of manganites in the range 2.3–2.6 eV below the metal-insulator transition temperature. These findings complement the understanding of the electronic structure of manganites in general. Moreover, they also provide a basis for the search for new functional materials.

Аннотация: A plasma-chemical method for the modification of silicon carbide particles is presented, which makes it possible to obtain particles with a controlled surface morphology. The variable parameter of particle processing was the ratio of the fraction of plasma-forming (Ar) and additional (H) gases. It was shown that at Ar/H = 100/0, the formation of a carbon shell is observed; at Ar/H ratios of 91/9 and 84/16, the particles are characterized by a carbon shell decorated with silicon nanoparticles or nanowires, respectively. The modified particles were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

Аннотация: The energies of various magnetically ordered structures for ludwigite Ni2MnBO5 have been calculated in the framework of the first-principles approach using the Wien2K program package, with the parameters of exchange interactions being determined. Two subsystems can be distinguished in the magnetic system, which are associated with the triads 4-2-4 and 3-1-3. The magnetic moments of the ions in both triads are antiferromagnetically oriented. The analysis of the exchange contribution to the energy shows that there occurs an increase of the magnetic cell relative to the crystallographic one due to antiferromagnetic ordering of the magnetic moments along the c axis in three-legged ladders formed by 4-2-4 triads. However, in three-legged ladders formed by 3-1-3 triads, the magnetic moments of the ions are ordered along the c-axis ferromagnetically. The predicted type of magnetic ordering in Ni2MnBO5 is similar to magnetic ordering in Fe3BO5. Non-collinear ordering of the magnetic moments of the subsystems at different temperatures is also likely to be observed in Ni2MnBO5, as is the case in Fe3BO5. Superexchange (indirect) interactions (No-O-B-O-Ni) influence the orientation of the magnetic moments of two 3-1-3 (4-2-4) triads within the unit cell. It is these interactions that may be responsible for the formation of long-range magnetic order in Co3BO5 and ferrimagnetic-antiferromagnetic spin-reorientation transition in Fe3BO5.

Аннотация: Gliomas remain challenging brain tumors to treat due to their infiltrative nature. Accurately identifying tumor boundaries during surgery is crucial for successful resection. This study introduces an innovative intraoperative visualization method utilizing surgical fluorescence microscopy to precisely locate tumor cell dissemination. Here, the focus is on the development of a novel contrasting agent (IR-Glint) for intraoperative visualization of human glial tumors comprising infrared-labeled Glint aptamers. The specificity of IR-Glint is assessed using flow cytometry and microscopy on primary cell cultures. In vivo effectiveness is studied on mouse and rabbit models, employing orthotopic xenotransplantation of human brain gliomas with various imaging techniques, including PET/CT, in vivo fluorescence visualization, confocal laser scanning, and surgical microscopy. The experiments validate the potential of IR-Glint for the intraoperative visualization of gliomas using infrared imaging. IR-Glint penetrates the blood–brain barrier and can be used for both intravenous and surface applications, allowing clear visualization of the tumor. The surface application directly to the brain reduces the dosage required and mitigates potential toxic effects on the patient. The research shows the potential of infrared dye-labeled aptamers for accurately visualizing glial tumors during brain surgery. This novel aptamer-assisted fluorescence-guided surgery (AptaFGS) may pave the way for future advancements in the field of neurosurgery.

Аннотация: We consider double perforated slabs (membranes) that support a symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum (BIC). These slabs are immersed into a liquid at room temperature. Laser excitation of the BIC generates giant optical forces that strongly affect the Brownian motion of nanoparticles in a colloidal solution. By solving of the Fokker-Planck equation we show that a single membrane can localize only larger nanoparticles. However, system of two parallel membranes can trap extremely small nanometer-sized nanoparticles by a resonant excitation of quasi-BICs, with varying intensities in each membrane.

Аннотация: The unique properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials make them highly versatile for a wide range of applications. Recently, low-dimensional structures obtained from bulk non-van der Waals materials have received particular interest. Yttrium carbonate is an example of such materials which hold the potential for creating 2D structures, however, its fundamental properties have been investigated only rarely. In this work, we demonstrate the possibility of obtaining 2D yttrium carbonate with the tengerite-(Y) structure. The electronic and optical properties of both bulk and two-dimensional Y2(CO3)3·2H2O are investigated using the PBE and HSE06 functionals. While the bulk material is predicted with a bandgap of 7.06 eV at the HSE06 level, the 2D Y2(CO3)3·2H2O material possesses a bandgap of, untypically, 0.4 eV narrower than the bulk material due to surface effects and different stoichiometry. The optical properties reveal that both the bulk and 2D forms are transparent in the visible and near-UV regions positioning them as promising candidates for various optical applications including doping-induced luminescent devices.

Аннотация: Interest in hybrid quasi-one-dimensional systems with an inner semiconducting part coated with a superconductor (the so-called core/shell structure) has been grown in the last decade. Materials with a strong spin?orbit coupling and a large g-factor (InAs, InSb) are chosen as semiconductors. Due to the proximity effect, such objects can be considered as superconducting wires, where the existence of Majorana states has been predicted. This review briefly summarizes the current experimental studies aimed at the detection of Majorana quasiparticle excitations in superconducting wires. Furthermore, prospects of using the interference geometry of devices including such wires are discussed. In particular, the coherent transport in a spatially inhomogeneous one-dimensional normal metal/superconductor/normal metal system, where normal metal wires serve as arms of an interference device, which interact with a normal metal contact, has been analyzed theoretically. It has been found that responses of Majorana and Andreev low-energy excitations of the device can be distinguished.

Аннотация: We calculate electronic structure and spin susceptibility dependencies on doping within the framework of a cluster perturbation theory for strongly correlated electronic systems. The change in the susceptibility with increasing doping is qualitatively consistent with the experimental data on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and inelastic neutron scattering, as well as with the results of the calculations within the quantum Monte Carlo method.

Аннотация: Results are presented from investigating the ferromagnetic resonance spectra of arrays of Co‒Ni and Co‒Fe‒Ni wires with different composition gradients, deposited into polycarbonate track-etched membranes. The effect interfaces and concentration gradients have on the effective fields of the investigated wires is examined. An anomalous angular dependence of the fields of ferromagnetic resonance is observed for the wire arrays at a pore density of ~18% in the membrane.

Аннотация: Ferrihydrite nanoparticles are synthesized and characterized. The dependences of heating of powders are studied upon pumping by a high-frequency electromagnetic field on a dc magnetic field. It is shown that the experimental dependence of the temperature of particles on a dc magnetic field is consistent with the theory of ferromagnetic resonance for an isotropic superparamagnet.

Аннотация: A fullerene mixture was enriched with endohedral metallofullerenes (EMF) using Lewis acid (TiCl4), which took 22 min, whereas the standard method requires about 8 h. An algorithm for assessing small-area chromatographic peaks has been proposed, which has improved the accuracy of determination. For example, the area of the C84 peak was 4.24% using the developed program, while the use of chromatograph software estimated the area of this peak to be 1.78%.
