Cholesteric liquid crystals -- Circular polarization -- Electric fields -- Optical devices -- Phase plates -- Refractive index
Аннотация: The structure consisting of alternating uniaxial dielectric layers is known to produce reflection of the same polarization as the incident field; e.g., the right-hand elliptically polarized light preserves this right-handedness and ellipticity of polarization at reflection. The parameters permitting the properly-polarized reflectance to exceed 99% in a wide frequency range were considered both analytically and numerically. The mirror with tuned top-layer thickness is shown to have several times less polarization losses than the uniform mirror. The hybrid mirror with metallic bottom layer has a considerably reduced thickness.

Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of a niobium nitride (NbN) film prepared by reactive sputtering onto a quartz substrate are investigated. It is shown using scanning electron microscopy that the film has a columnar structure with a diameter of crystallite columns of about 50 nm. The film magnetization loops are measured for the field orientation parallel and perpendicular to its surface. Based on the experimental data, the critical current densities of the film are estimated in both cases. For the field parallel to the film surface, the estimate is 6.5 × 104 A/cm2 at the liquid helium temperature. For the field perpendicular to the surface, the critical current density is close to the depairing current density (107 A/cm2). Analysis of the results based on different models of magnetic vortex pinning in superconductors shows that in the former case, pinning occurs at the boundaries of columns in the bulk of the sample, while in the latter case, it is determined by the influence of the surface barrier.

   MAGNETIZATION

Аннотация: We report upon the specific heat and magnetocaloric properties of Cu2MnBO5 over a temperature range of 60–350 K and in magnetic fields up to 18 kOe. It is found that at temperatures below the Curie temperature (TC ∼ 92 K), CP(T)/T possesses a linear temperature-dependent behavior, which is associated with the predominance of two-dimensional antiferromagnetic interactions of magnons. The temperature independence of CP/T = f(T) is observed in the temperature range of 95–160 K, which can be attributed to the excitation of the Wigner glass phase. The magnetocaloric effect [i.e., the adiabatic temperature change, ΔTad (T,H)] is assessed through a direct measurement or an indirect method using the CP(T,H) data. Owing to its strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, an anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) or the rotating MCE [ΔTadrot (T)] is observed in Cu2MnBO5. A deep minimum in the ΔTadrot (T) near the TC is observed and ascribed to the anisotropy of the paramagnetic susceptibility.

ELECTRONIC RAMAN-SCATTERING
Аннотация: We study the dynamical quasiparticle scattering by spin and charge fluctuations in Fe-based pnictides within a five-orbital model with on-site interactions. The leading contribution to the scattering rate is calculated from the second-order diagrams with the polarization operator calculated in the random-phase approximation. We find one-particle scattering rates which are highly anisotropic on each Fermi surface sheet due to the momentum dependence of the spin susceptibility and the multiorbital composition of each Fermi pocket. This fact, combined with the anisotropy of the effective mass, produces disparity between electrons and holes in conductivity, the Hall coefficient, and the Raman initial slope, in qualitative agreement with experimental data.

LiInSe2 -- crystal growth -- thermal expansion -- band structure -- XPS -- DFT
Аннотация: Optical quality cm-sized LiInSe2 crystals were grown using the Bridgman–Stockbarger method, starting from pure element reagents, under the conditions of a low temperature gradient of 5–6 degrees/cm and a slight melt overheating. The phase purity of the grown crystal was verified by the powder XRD analysis. The thermophysical characteristics of LiInSe2 were determined by the XRD measurements in the temperature range of 303–703 K and strong anisotropy of the thermal expansion coefficients was established. The following values of thermal expansion coefficients were determined in LiInSe2: αa = 8.1 (1), αb = 16.1 (2) and αc = 5.64 (6) MK−1. The electronic structure of LiInSe2 was measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The band structure of LiInSe2 was calculated by ab initio methods.

Activation energy -- Anisotropy -- Cobalt compounds -- Crystal structure -- Electric conductivity -- Electronic properties -- Magnetic moments -- Magnetic susceptibility -- Negative thermal expansion
Аннотация: The investigations of the crystal structure, magnetic and electronic properties of Co3BO5 at high temperatures were carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermopower measurements. The orthorhombic symmetry (Sp.gr. Pbam) was observed at 300 K and no evidence of structural phase transitions was found up to 1000 K. The compound shows a strong anisotropy of the thermal expansion. A large negative thermal expansion along the a-axis is observed over a wide temperature range (T = 300–600 K) with αa = −35 M K−1 at T = 500 K with simultaneous expansion along the b- and c-axes with αb = 70 M K−1 and αc = 110 M K−1, respectively. The mechanisms of thermal expansion are explored by structural analysis. The activation energy of the conductivity decreases significantly above 700 K. Electronic transport was found to be a dominant conduction mechanism in the entire temperature range. The correlations between the thermal expansion, electrical resistivity, and effective magnetic moment were revealed and attributed to the evolution of the spin state of Co3+ ions towards the spin crossover and gradual charge-ordering transition.

Аннотация: The two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg model (J 0) with anisotropic exchange Delta = 1-J(X)/J(Z) greater than or equal to 0 and with S = 1/2 is studied by the quantum Monte-Carlo method. Energy, susceptibility, specific heat, spin-spin correlation functions, and correlation radius are calculated. The dependence of the Neel temperature T(N)/J = 2/ln(11/Delta) on the exchange anisotropy is determined. The static magnetic factor is very slowly decreased for T/J 0.4. It is assumed to realize topological excitations in the range of these temperatures. The correlation radius of the isotropic Heisenberg model is fitted by the dependence 1/xi = 2.05T(1.0(6))/exp (1.0(4)/T).The temperature behavior of the static structural magnetic factor in La(2)CuO(4) and Er(2)CuO(4) for T T(N) is in agreement with the MC calculations.

Аннотация: The two-dimensional Heisenberg spin-1/2 model with alternated exchange interaction along the c axis and an anisotropic distribution of the exchange interaction in the lattice, J(b)/J(c)=0.1, is examined. A quantum Monte Carlo method is used to calculate the phase diagrams of the antiferromagnet, the dimer state in a plane, the value of the alternation delta of the exchange interaction, and the anisotropy Delta=1-J(xy)/J(z) of the exchange interaction, Delta similar to delta(0.58(6)). The following characteristics are calculated for Delta=0.25: the dependence of the temperature of the dimer-state-paramagnet transition on the alternation of the exchange interaction, T-c(delta)=0.55(4(delta-0.082(6))(0.50(3)), the singlet-triplet energy gap, and the dependence of the magnetization on the external field for some values of delta. The value of the exchange interaction, J(c)=127 K, the alternation of the exchange interaction, delta=0.11J(c), and the correlation radius along the c axis, xi(c) approximate to 28c, are determined. Finally, it is found that the temperature dependence of the susceptibility and the specific heat are in good agreement with the experimental data. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: The two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg model with anisotropic exchange (Delta = 1 - J(x)/J(z)) and with negative next nearest neighbor exchange (J(2)) with S = 1/2 is investigated by using the quantum-mechanical Monte-Carlo method. The energy, magnetic moment at a site, heat capacity, and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated. The stability regions for Neel ordering of spins as well as the strip-phase and gapless quantum spin liquid are determined in the interval Delta/2 less than or equal to J(2)/ J(1)less than or equal to 1/(2 Delta). Аннотация: Magnetic with anisotropic anti ferromagnetic exchange interactions and special topology of coupling in the square lattice with spins pairs ordering is studied by quantum Monte Carlo method. The antiferromagnetic order is found to be more stable as compared to spin liquid state. Exchange interactions and wave vector of structure modulation for Cu3B2O6 is estimated. Neel temperature versus strength of exchange in spin pair is calculated. Plateau and modulation of magnetic structure in field magnetization dependence is revealed. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.
