Аннотация: We have investigated the magnetic ground state in CuB2O4, copper metaborate, by means of neutron diffraction and muSR measurements. At T-N = 21 K CuB2O4 undergoes a second-order phase transition from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic commensurate state followed by a second transition at T* = 10 K where the two magnetic sublattices form a soliton lattice, as reported earlier. We give a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in the commensurate phase which is found to be different from the one published recently. New experimental results are presented which show the existence of a third transition below T approximate to 1.8 K. The magnetic structure remains incommensurate at very low temperatures, but a re-distribution of the magnetic intensities is observed in the neutron diffraction data set which suggests that the phases between the Cu2+ spins are changed. Аннотация: Single crystals of germanium double salt (NH4)3GeF7 = (NH4)2GeF6·NH4F = (NH4)3[GeF6]F were grown and studied by the methods of polarization optics and X-ray diffraction. The birefringence Δn = (no − ne), the rotation angle of the optical indicatrix ϕ(T) and unit cell parameters were measured in the temperature range 100–400 K. Three structural phase transitions were found at the temperatures: T1↓ = 279.2 K (T1↑ = 279.4 K), T2↑ = 270 K (T2↓ = 268.9 K), T3↓ = 218 K (T3↑ = 227 K). An unusual sequence of symmetry transformations with temperature change was established: P4/mbm (Z = 2) (G1) ↔ Pbam (Z = 4) (G2) ↔ P21/c (Z = 4) (G3) ↔ Pa (Z = 8) (G4). The crystal structures of different phases were determined. The experimental data were additionally interpreted by a group-theoretical analysis of the complete condensate of order parameters taking into account the critical and noncritical atomic displacements. Strengthening of the N–H⋯F hydrogen bonds can be a driving force of the observed phase transitions.

Аннотация: A system of mutual relationships (a hierarchy) is constructed between various perovskite-like crystal structures based on available structural data. All the perovskite-like structures are characterized by a common indicator of their relationship-the presence of layers, stacks, or frameworks made up of BX6 octahedra linked at their vertices (where B is a cation, X is an anion) or fragments of octahedra in the form of BX5 pyramids or BX4 squares in anion-deficient compounds. In layered structures, these stacks are joined to each other by various intermediate blocks. It is well known that one homological series of compounds is constructed by increasing the number of layers in a stack while preserving the same kind of connecting block. Crystals of various series that contain identical stacks (but different blocks of one or two types) can also be related to one another via this feature. The hierarchical system includes compounds with small distortions in their structures for various reasons. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Аннотация: Random domain structures in orthorhombic strontium tetraborate (α-SBO) are capable in enhancing nonlinear optical conversion efficiency for large variety of processes throughout all transparency window of this material, down to 121 nm. Properties of the material, origin of domains, frequency doubling and autocorrelation measurements, conversion of supercontinuum to UV and continuously tunable VUV generation are described. Аннотация: Based on the results of in situ electron diffraction study of the solid-state reaction and electrical resistivity measurements on the Al/Ag thin films with an atomic ratio of Al : Ag = 1 : 3, the temperature of the reaction onset has been established and a model of the structural phase transitions has been proposed. The solid-state reaction begins at 70°C with the formation of the Al–Ag solid solution at the interface between the aluminum and silver nanolayers. It has been found that, in the course of the reaction, the intermetallic compounds γ-Ag2Al → μ-Ag3Al are successively formed. It is shown that the possibility of the formation of the μ‑Ag3Al phase during the solid-state reaction in the Al/Ag thin films depends on the aluminum-to-silver ratio, while the formation of the μ-Ag3Al phase begins only after all fcc aluminum has reacted.

Аннотация: The processes of phase formation during a solid-state reaction between Fe and Al nanolayers have been investigated by the in situ electron diffraction method. It is established that the solid-state reaction at the interface between iron and aluminum nanolayers begins at ≈100°C with the formation of a disordered Al solid solution in α-Fe. It is shown that intermetallic phases (FeAl6 and/or Fe2Al5, FeAl, and Fe3Al) are successively formed upon further heating.

Аннотация: Thermal atomic vibrations in the cubic phase of Cs//2NaNdCl//6 single crystal undergoing the structural phase transition (PT) at 138 K are investigated from the data of X-ray diffraction obtained at 278, 218, and 148 K. A significant anisotropy of thermal vibrations and their deviations from harmonic behavior are found for the Cl-atoms of the structure. These atoms displace from their equilibrium positions below PT due to the tilts of the octahedral groups.

Аннотация: For the manganites RMnO(3) (R = La, Pr, Nd), a mechanism is proposed to explain the anomalous temperature dependences of the kinetic coefficients, resistivity, and thermoelectric power during the transition from the pseudocubic O to the orthorhombic O' crystal structure. The contributions of the bending and stretching modes of the octahedron to the formation of thermal-conductivity maxima and to the deviation from the linear dependence of ln(rho/T) on 1/T at low temperatures have been estimated. In nickelates, the metal-insulator transition is caused by lattice-polaron pinning by the stretching mode of the octahedron, and the low-temperature anomaly of the thermal conductivity is related to electron scattering by the bending mode of the octahedron.

Аннотация: We studied Fresnel diffraction of a Laguerre-Gaussian beam LGp,l with arbitrary azimuthal l and radial p indices on a grating induced during its Raman interaction with a spatially periodic pump field in an atomic medium. The diffraction pattern turned out to be more complex than the classical Talbot effect observed when a plane wave illuminates a two-dimensional grating. The simulation results show that, under certain conditions, at distances corresponding to the classical Talbot planes (integer and fractional), periodic amplitude-phase distributions appear. The diffraction patterns are not a probe-field image in the induced grating plane, but a regular array of vortex annular-shaped microbeams with an inhomogeneous intensity distribution depending on the l and p indices and with a topological charge equal to that of the initial probe beam. The intensity and spatial distribution of diffraction patterns can be controlled by Raman amplification in the induced grating by varying the pump-field intensity or the Raman detuning.

Аннотация: In this paper, we study diffraction of a vortex Gaussian probe beam on a two-dimensional (2D) Raman-induced diffraction grating. Both near- and far-field diffraction of a vortex beam is considered. In the near field, quasi-Talbot images occur at specific distances from the grating, which corresponds to the classical Talbot length. Diffraction patterns in the Talbot planes are a periodic 2D array of ring-like vortex beamlets with topological charges (TCs) equal to the illuminating probe beam's charge. The lateral (off-axis) beamlets consist of several overlapping vortices with the TCs l = 1 and l =-1, and their centers (singular points) are offset relative to each other. It is shown that in the near field the TC is conserved, and the total diffraction field represents a single (global) vortex with an effective TC equal to the charge of the vortex probe beam. In the far field, diffraction patterns are also a 2D array of ring-like local vortices with a period depending on the z coordinate. Their TCs are equal to the charge of the probe field. It is shown that in a far field, the diffracted field's total TC is also equal to that of the probe field. We demonstrate that by choosing the pump field parameters, one can effectively control the intensity of diffraction orders.

Аннотация: We propose and analyze an efficient scheme for the one- and two-dimensional atomic gratings based on periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain and dispersion, which we name the Raman-induced diffraction gratings (RIDGs). There are fundamentally different from those based on electromagnetically induced transparency. As the probe field propagates along the direction normal to the standing pump wave, it can be effectively diffracted into high-order directions. The grating is a hybrid grating, i.e. it represents a mixture of amplitude and phase gratings. We identify the conditions when all high-order diffractions are amplified. In addition, we also show that diffraction of a probe field could be dynamically controlled using an additional laser field. With its help, it is possible to suppress or amplify diffraction beams. The RIDGs can be considered as all-optical multibeam splitters with amplification.

Аннотация: In the present work, we study the Talbot effect under selective reflection of probe radiation at the interface between a dielectric and a layer of resonant atoms, in which a Raman grating is induced. Under such conditions, the interface can operate as a reflective diffraction grating. The cases of one- and two-dimensional gratings are considered. It is shown that the reflection coefficient, with the account of the selectively reflected wave, can be both greater or smaller than the usual Fresnel reflection coefficient. The Talbot effect can be observed for a selectively reflected wave in the near-field diffraction region. The spatial structure of the diffraction patterns essentially depends on the pump field intensity and the Raman detuning.
В работе исследуется эффект Тальбота при селективном отражении пробного излучения на границе раздела диэлектрик — слой резонансных атомов, в котором индуцируется рамановская решетка. В таких условиях интерфейс может выступать как отражательная дифракционная решетка. Рассмотрены случаи одномерных и двумерных решеток. Показано, что коэффициент отражения с учетом селективно отраженной волны может быть как больше, так и меньше обычного коэффициента отражения Френеля. Эффект Тальбота можно наблюдать для селективно отраженной волны в ближней дифракционной области. Пространственная структура дифракционных картин существенно зависит от напряженности поля накачки и рамановской отстройки.

Аннотация: The rhodium complexes [RhCl3(NH3)3], (I), and [Rh(NO3)3(NH3)3], (II), are built from octa­hedral RhX3(NH3)3 units; in (I) they are isolated units, while in (II) the units are stacked in columns with partially filled sites for the Rh atoms. The octa­hedra of monoclinic crystals of (I) are linked by N-H...Cl hydrogen bonds and the Rh3+ ions are located on the mirror planes. In the trigonal crystals of (II), the discontinuous `columns` along the threefold axis are linked by N-H...O hydrogen bonds. The structure of (I) has been solved using laboratory powder diffraction data, the structure of (II) has been solved by single-crystal methods using data from a merohedrally twinned sample. Both compounds possess low solubility in water.

Аннотация: The molecular structure of 1-phenyl-2-nitroguanidine is nonplanar, but contains two almost planar fragments: nitroguanyl and phenyl groups. Unlike previously studied nitroguanidines, in 1-phenyl-2-nitroguanidine, the nitro group is turned to the secondary amino group. However, the structural parameters of the nitroguanyl group are little different from those of nitroguanidine and its alkyl derivatives. In the benzene ring, the symmetry in the geometric parameters is not observed, which is explained by the intermolecular interaction with the neighboring molecule.

Аннотация: Analytical formulas are derived for the transmission and reflection coefficients of electromagnetic E- and H-waves incident at an arbitrary angle on a one-dimensional strip conductor grating located at the interface between two dielectric media. The feasibility of adjusting the grating reflectivity within wide limits by varying its design parameters is demonstrated, which allows these structures to be used in multilayered dielectric bandpass filters.

Аннотация: Infrared absorption spectra of the bismuth pyrostannate Bi2(Sn0.95Cr0.05)2O7 were investigated in the frequency range 350-1100 cm-1 at temperatures of 110-525 K. Four frequency regions with split absorption lines are distinguished. Softening of frequencies at the structural transitions was observed. The maxima of permittivity measured in the frequency range 1-200 kHz at temperatures 100-400 K were determined. It was found that the magnetic susceptibility changes its sign in the low-temperature region. The correlation between anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility, permittivity, and absorption line intensity was established. Softening of frequencies is explained by the variation in the coefficient of thermal expansion of the lattice. The temperature behavior of permittivity is described using the Debye model. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Аннотация: A polymeric coordination compound, [Ba(H2O) 2(Hba)2] (1) (H2ba – barbituric acid, C4H4N2O3), was obtained. The structure of 1 was solved using powder X-ray diffraction methods. The Ba2+ ion in 1 formed a three-capped trigonal prism. The BaO9 polyhedra, connected with each other by the edges and faces, formed a chain. Several 4- and 12-membered cycles due to the bridging μ2-H2O and bridging μ3-Hba– also formed implementing a 3-D polymer structure. The structures of 1 and other thiobarbiturate complexes were compared. The replacement of a S atom by an O atom in the heterocyclic ligand Htba− (thiobarbiturate ion) of the compound Ba(H2O)2(Htba)2 resulted in changes of the coordination number Ba(II) and supramolecular structure. The intermolecular hydrogen bonds O–H⋯O and N–H⋯O formed a 3-D net where pronounced 2-D layers of Hba– ions could be found. A new topological net in 1 was observed. The IR and thermal stability were investigated.

Аннотация: We demonstrate bound states in the first TE and TM diffraction continua (BSC) in a linear periodic array of dielectric spheres in air above the light cone. We classify the BSCs according to the symmetry specified by the azimuthal number m, the Bloch wave vector β directed along the array, and polarization. The most simple symmetry-protected TE and TM polarized BSCs have m=0 and β=0 and occur in a wide range of the radii of the spheres and dielectric constants. More complicated BSCs with m≠0 and β=0 exist only for a selected radius of the spheres at a fixed dielectric constant. We also find robust Bloch BSCs with β≠0 and m=0. We present also the BSCs embedded into two and three diffraction continua. We show that the BSCs can be easily detected by the collapse of the Fano resonance for scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by the array.
