Аннотация: We present detailed simulations addressing recent electronic interference experiments,where a metallic gate is used to locally modify the Fermi wavelength of the charge carriers. Our numerical calculations are based on a solution of the one-particle Schrodinger equation for a realistic model of the actual sample geometry, including a Poison equation-based determination of the potential due to the gate. The conductance is determined with the multiprobe Landauer-Buttiker formula, and in general we find conductance vs gate voltage characteristics, which closely resemble the experimental traces. A detailed examination based on quantum-mechanical streamlines suggests that the simple one-dimensional semiclassical model often used to describe the experiments has only a limited range of validity, and that certain ''unexpected" periodicities should not be assigned any particular significance, they arise due to the complicated multiple scattering processes occurring in certain sample geometries.

Аннотация: Inversionless gain in a degenerate three-level system driven by a strong external field and by collisions with a buffer gas is investigated. The mechanism of population distribution in upper laser level, contributed by the collision transfer, as well as by relaxation, induced by pressure of a buffer gas, is discussed in detail. Explicit formulae for analysis of optimal conditions are derived. The idea developed here for the incoherent pump could be generalized to other systems.

Аннотация: The spatial and temporal dynamics of two short pulses propagating in an optically dense medium of resonant three-level Lambda-atoms is investigated numerically and analytically. The maximum coherence for the Raman transition due to coherent population trapping. it is shown that, at the initial stage of propagation, the waveforms of such pulses only slightly change along the length of the medium, which may considerably exceed the length of linear absorption for a single weak pulse. As the length of the absorbing medium increases, the energy of the probe (first) pulse is completely transferred into the second (control) pulse.

Аннотация: Spatio-temporal dynamics of two short laser pulses propagating in an absorbing medium, which consists of one-and two-photon resonant ii-atoms, is investigated in the adiabatic approximation. We give an analytical solution and compare it with numerical simulations. It is shown that pulses may propagate in a medium, whose thickness is considerably greater than the length of the linear absorption of a single weak probe wave. Finally, full transfer of the probe pulse energy into the coupling pulse takes place. A vector model of the adiabatic interaction of two pulses with three-level atom is proposed.

Аннотация: Explicit expressions are derived for the rectified radiative forces (RRFs) related to the action of a weak interfering optical field of an arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) configuration upon resonance particles featuring the J = 0 -- J = 1 quantum transition. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of a monochromatic field, there are simple 3D biharmonic field configurations for which the ratio of the vortex and potential RRF components can be controlled by adjusting frequencies and polarizations of the interfering light waves. This modification of the RRF structure gives rise to qualitatively different types of both vortex and potential light-induced particle motions that may lead to a 3D spatial localization (confinement) of these particles within the cells of an effective optical lattice with a period significantly greater than the light wavelength. In particular, the particles may perform a stable rotational motion along closed trajectories inside the elementary cells. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The dynamics of the optical response of a polymer-dispersed nematic liquid crystal under the action of electric field pulses was experimentally studied for film samples differing in the size of nematic droplets. The optical signal relaxation curve exhibits an oscillating character, with the number of oscillations determined by the transverse size of the nematic droplets. The interference character of the signal oscillations is confirmed by an analysis of the oscillating response within the framework of the anomalous diffraction approximation and by a comparison with the dependence of the transmitted light intensity on the applied voltage measured in a static regime. Аннотация: We study interference of the cold atoms which are released out of the quasi one- dimensional optical lattice, for the different initial states of the system. In particular, in the case of the Mott- insulator initial state, the atomic- density distribution is shown to exhibit a non- trivial interference pattern, similar to that observed for BEC in double- well potential in the experiment by Andrews et al. ( Science, 275 ( 1997) 637).

Аннотация: Thin single crystal films of an equiatomic Co50Pt50 alloy synthesized by magnetron sputtering on a MgO single crystal substrate were studied by X-ray diffractometry. Interference oscillations with a period depending on the Co-Pt alloy film thickness were observed in the region of (001) reflection, characterizing the L1(0) type ordering, and in the region of small diffraction angles (2Theta 10degrees). Аннотация: By using a simple model we consider single-channel transmission through a double quantum dot that consists of two single dots coupled by a wire of finite length L. Each of the two single dots is characterized by a few energy levels only, and the wire is assumed to have only one level whose energy depends on the length L. The transmission is described by using S matrix theory and the effective non-Hermitian Hamilton operator H-eff of the system. The decay widths of the eigenstates of H-eff depend strongly on energy. The model explains the origin of the transmission zeros of the double dot that is considered by us. Mostly, they are caused by (destructive) interferences between neighboring levels and are of first order. When, however, both single dots are identical and their transmission zeros are of first order, those of the double dot are of second order. First-order transmission zeros cause phase jumps of the transmission amplitude by pi, while there are no phase jumps related to second-order transmission zeros. In this latter case, a phase jump occurs due to the fact that the width of one of the states vanishes when crossing the energy of the transmission zero. The parameter dependence of the widths of the resonance states is determined by the spectral properties of the two single dots.
