Аннотация: The effect of Kerr nonlinearity on the transmission of laser radiation in a one-dimensional photonic crystal has been investigated by the transfer-matrix method, modified to describe nonlinear effects. The crystal under study is a thin-film multilayer structure with a spatial distribution of the refractive index, which makes it possible to eliminate side bands in the transmission spectrum at each side of the photonic band gap and significantly increase the slope of the transmission curve. The transmission spectrum of such a photonic crystal structure has been studied for two opposite directions of laser radiation propagation. The anisotropy of nonlinear transmission is most pronounced near the edge of the photonic crystal band gap, which lies in the near-IR region. The proposed structure, having strong transmission anisotropy and sufficiently low reflection in the forward direction, can operate as an optical diode (analog of an electron diode). Аннотация: We study the spectrum of an open double quantum dot as a function of different system parameters in order to receive information on the geometric phases of branch points in the complex plane (BPCP). We relate them to the geometrical phases of the diabolic points (DPs) of the corresponding closed system. The double dot consists of two single dots and a wire connecting them. The two dots and the wire are represented by only a single state each. The spectroscopic values follow from the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian describing the double dot system. They are real when the system is closed, and complex when the system is opened by attaching leads to it. The discrete states as well as the narrow resonance states avoid crossing. The DPs are points within the avoided level crossing scenario of discrete states. At the BPCP, width bifurcation occurs. Here, different Riemann sheets evolve and the levels do not cross anymore. The BPCP are physically meaningful. The DPs are unfolded into two BPCP with different chirality when the system is opened. The geometric phase that arises by encircling the DP in the real plane, is different from the phase that appears by encircling the BPCP. This is found to be true even for a weakly opened system and the two BPCP into which the DP is unfolded.

Аннотация: The phase transition from the bipolar structure to the homogeneous structure in droplets formed from the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl in poly(vinyl butyral) in the presence of a magnetic field has been investigated. The phase transition is associated with the expansion of the regions with a tilted orientation of the director in the vicinity of defects (the disappearance of boojums) and with the alignment of the nematic director lines in the bulk of the droplet in the direction of the magnetic field. In the temperature range T = 24-34A degrees C, cyclic mutual transformations between the bipolar configuration of the nematic director and the homogeneous structure, which have a period of similar to 0.5-3.5 s and result from thermal fluctuations of the order parameter, are observed in droplets 3-15 A mu m in size after the forming field is switched off.

Аннотация: The purely classical counterpart of the scattering probability matrix (SPM) \S(n,m)\(2) of the quantum scattering matrix S is defined for two-dimensional quantum waveguides for an arbitrary number of propagating modes M. We compare the quantum and classical structures of \S(n,m)\(2) for a waveguide with generic Hamiltonian chaos. It is shown that even for a moderate number of channels, knowledge of the classical structure of the SPM allows us to predict the global structure of the quantum one and, hence, understand important quantum transport properties of waveguides in terms of purely classical dynamics. It is also shown that the SPM, being an intensity measure, can give additional dynamical information to that obtained by the Poincare maps.

Аннотация: We have studied magnetic nanoparticles of cobalt ferrite obtained by the extraction-pyrolysis method in a mesoporous silicon dioxide (MSM-41) molecular sieve matrix. The X-ray diffraction data show evidence for the formation of CoFe(2)O(4) particles with a coherent scattering domain size of similar to 40 nm. Measurements of the magnetization curves showed that powders consisting of these nanoparticles are magnetically hard materials with a coercive field of H (c)(4.2 K) = 9.0 kOe and H (c)(300 K) = 1.8 kOe and a reduced remanent magnetization of M (r)/M (s)(4.2 K) = 0.83 and M (r)/M (s)(300 K) = 0.49. The shape of the low-temperature (4.2 K) magnetization curves is adequately described in terms of the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for randomly oriented single-domain particles with a cubic magnetic anisotropy.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): ceramics--zirconium tungstate--negative thermal expansion coefficient--phase transformation--spinel
Аннотация: The article investigates the phase composition of (Al2O3 – 20 wt % ZrO2)–ZrW2O8 ceramic composites obtained by cold-pressing and sintering processes. Using X-ray analysis it has been shown that composites mainly have monoclinic modification of zirconium dioxide and orthorhombic phase of aluminum oxide. After adding zirconium tungstate the phase composition of sintered ceramics changes, followed by the formation of tungsten-aluminates spinel such as Alx(WOy)z. It has been shown that thermal expansion coefficient of material decreases approximatly by 30%, as compared with initial ceramics.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): coupled mode theory--non-hermitian hamiltonian--acoustic resonator--s-matrix
Аннотация: We develop the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach for open systems with Neumann boundary conditions. The approach can be used for calculating the scattering matrix and the scattering function in open resonator–waveguide systems. In higher than one dimension the method represents acoustic coupled mode theory in which the scattering solution within an open resonator is found in the form of expansion over the eigenmodes of the closed resonator decoupled from the waveguides. The problem of finding the transmission spectra is reduced to solving a set of linear equations with a non-Hermitian matrix whose anti-Hermitian term accounts for coupling between the resonator eigenmodes and the scattering channels of the waveguides. Numerical applications to acoustic two-, and three-dimensional resonator–waveguide problems are considered.

Аннотация: An exact solution for a model describing the equilibrium behavior of an ensemble of Ising chains with nonmagnetic intersite repulsion of nearest neighbors and an equilibrium distribution of nonmagnetic impurities is obtained using the transfer matrix technique. The possibility of exciting quantum phase transitions using the intersite repulsion parameter in a system is demonstrated. Proximity to the critical points of these transitions has a substantial effect on the temperature dependence of a system’s magnetic susceptibility. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Using data on the structure of plant leaves, specific features of light propagation in biophotoniccrystal structures have been established by the transfer matrix method. Splitting of the stopband in two bands has been found. The density of photonic states and the electromagnetic field value have been calculated. The occurrence of two photosystems (splitting of the stopband in two bands), the peculiarity of the long-wavelength quantum yield and its enhancement (Emerson effect), and water dissociation in the soft mode due to an increase in the electromagnetic field on the layers are explained.

Аннотация: A study of heat capacity, thermal dilatation, susceptibility to hydrostatic pressure, permittivity and polarization loops was carried out on NH4HSO4–porous glass nanocomposites (AHS + PG) as well as empty glass matrices. The formation of dendrite clusters of AHS with a size, dcryst, exceeding the pore size was found. An insignificant anisotropy of thermal expansion of AHS + PG showing statistically uniform distribution of AHS with random orientations of nanocrystallites over the matrix was observed. The effect of internal and external pressures on thermal properties and permittivity was studied. At the phase transition P-1 ↔ Pc, a strongly nonlinear decrease in the entropy ΔS2 and volume strain (ΔV/V)T2 was observed with decreasing dcryst. The linear change in temperatures of both phase transitions P-1 ↔ Pc ↔ P21/c under hydrostatic pressure is accompanied by the expansion of the temperature range of existence of the ferroelectric phase Pc, while this interval narrows as dcryst decreases.

Аннотация: We study theoretically the electron-phonon interaction in NaxCoO2. For the A(1g) and E-1g phonon modes found in Raman experiments, we calculate the matrix elements of the electron-phonon interaction. Analyzing the feedback effect of the conduction electrons on the phonon frequency., we investigate the doping dependence of these two phonon modes. Due to the momentum dependence of the electron-phonon interaction, we find the strongest renormalization of the E-1g mode around the Brillouin zone boundary which should be observed in the neutron scattering. At the same time, the A(1g) mode shows the strongest coupling to the conducting electrons around the G point and reveals its doping dependence in the Raman experiments. Our results shed light on the possible importance of the electron-phonon interaction in the lamellar sodium cobaltates.

Аннотация: A new bismuth pyrostannate-based composite Bi2(Sn0.7Fe0.3)2O7-x/Bi2Fe4O9 (BSFO/BFO) has been obtained by the solid-state synthesis. Temperature dependences of the magnetic hysteresis and remanent magnetization and the nonlinear field dependence of the magnetization for the Bi2Fe4O9 antiferromagnet have been established. A temperature of the formation of canted sublattices in the antiferromagnet with the occurrence of a spontaneous moment in mullite has been determined. The mechanism of the electric polarization hysteresis and the temperature dependence of the remanent polarization have been established. It has been shown, that, below the Néel temperature, the dipole polarization is induced by a lone electron pair of bismuth ions. At T TN, the migration polarization is caused by the charge carrier density at the chemical potential. A significant increase in the remanent magnetization of mullite in the bismuth pyrostannate matrix with oxygen vacancies over a value typical of polycrystalline mullite has been established. Remanent magnetization is explained in terms of ferron model.

Аннотация: The exchange interactions in the Cr3+–Cr3+ ion pairs in the isostructural ABO3 (A = Ga, In, Sc) diamagnetic compounds have been examined using the magnetic resonance technique. The values of bilinear and biquadratic exchange interactions have been determined. It is shown that the biquadratic exchange in the Cr3+–Cr3+ pair in these compounds is caused by the exchange striction.

Аннотация: Fused silica plates have been implanted with 40 keV Co+ or Ni+ ions to high doses in the range of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2), and magnetic properties of the implanted samples have been studied with ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique supplemented by transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The high-dose implantation with 3d-ions results in the formation of cobalt and nickel metal nanoparticles in the irradiated subsurface layer of the SiO2 matrix. Co and Ni nanocrystals with hexagonal close packing and face-centered cubic structures have a spherical shape and the sizes of 4-5 nm (for cobalt) and 6-14 nm (for nickel) in diameter. Room-temperature FMR signals from ensembles of Co and Ni nanoparticles implanted in the SiO2 matrix exhibit an out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy that is typical for thin magnetic films. The dose and temperature dependences of FMR spectra have been analyzed using the Kittel formalism, and the effective magnetization and g-factor values have been obtained for Co- and Ni-implanted samples. Nonsymmetric FMR line shapes have been fitted by a sum of two symmetrical curves. The dependences of the magnetic parameters of each curve on the implantation dose and temperature are presented.

Аннотация: Evolution of the phase state of paramagnetic additions at various stages of synthesis and subsequent thermal treatment of glasses of the system Al(2)O(3)-K(2)O-B(2)O(3) simultaneously doped with Fe(2)O(3) and MnO is studied by means of a combination of experimental techniques: Faraday rotation (FR), electron magnetic resonance (EMR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic measurements. Both FR and EMR show that magnetically ordered clusters occur already at the first stage of the glass preparation. In particular, for the ratio of the Fe and Mn oxides in the charge close to 3:2, fine magnetic nanoparticles are formed with characteristics similar to those of manganese ferrite. By computer simulating the EMR spectra at variable temperatures, a superparamagnetic nature of these nanoparticles is confirmed and their mean diameter is estimated as approximately 3.2 nm. In the thermally treated glasses larger magnetic nanoparticles are formed, giving rise to FR spectra, characteristic of magnetically ordered systems, and the EMR spectra different from those in as-prepared glasses but also showing superparamagnetic narrowing. The Mossbauer spectroscopy corroborates the manganese ferrite structure of the nanoparticles and indicates their coexistence in the ferrimagnetic and superparamagnetic states. The TEM shows the presence of polydisperse nanoparticles on the background of the glass matrix, and electron diffraction of a selected region containing larger particles indicates a crystal structure close to that of MnFe(2)O(4). Energy-dispersive atomic x-ray spectra confirm that the major part of Fe and Mn introduced to the glass composition is gathered in the particles, with the concentration ratio close to 2:1, characteristic of bulk MnFe(2)O(4). Magnetic hysteresis loops of samples subjected to an additional thermal treatment demonstrate a strong increase in the coercive force, remnant magnetization, and high-field magnetic susceptibility with temperature decrease. The consistent results obtained using various techniques demonstrate that the formation of nanoparticles with characteristics close to those of MnFe(2)O(4) confers to these glasses magnetic and magneto-optical properties typical of substances possessing magnetic order.
