Аннотация: A photonic crystal microcavity with the liquid crystal resonant layer tunable by heating has been implemented. The multiple vanishing resonant lines corresponding to optical bound states in the continuum are observed. The abrupt change in the resonant linewidth near the vanishing point can be used for temperature sensing.

ludwigites -- magnetic phase transition -- indirect exchange interactions
Аннотация: The content of metal ions and their valence state for three NixCuyMn3–x–yBO5 compositions were estimated by EXAFS and XANES spectroscopy methods. In all three compositions, the copper y content did not exceed 0.25; in the third composition, some manganese ions entered the compound not only in the trivalent, but also in the divalent state. A detailed study of the magnetic properties showed that two magnetic transitions are observed in all compositions: one in the region of 60–75 K, and the second in the region of 10 K. Based on the exchange interactions calculated within the framework of the empirical model, the magnetic ordering temperatures for two- and three-lattice magnets were determined and it was assumed that the magnetic transition in the region of 60–75 K is associated with the ordering of magnetic moments in positions 2 and 3.

silicon -- cristobalite -- interface -- superlattice -- Raman spectra -- DFT modelling
Аннотация: Raman spectroscopy has proven its effectiveness as a highly informative and sensitive method for the nondestructive analysis of layered nanostructures and their interfaces. However, there is a lack of information concerning the characteristic phonon modes and their activity in Si/SiO2 nanostructures. In order to overcome this problem, the phonon states and Raman spectra of several Si/SiO2 superlattices (SL) with layer thicknesses varied within 0.5–2 nm are studied using DFT-based computer modeling. Two types of structures with different interfaces between crystalline silicon and SiO2 cristobalite were studied. A relationship between the phonon states of heterosystems and the phonon modes of the initial crystals was established. Estimates of the parameters of deformation potentials are obtained, with the help of which the shifts of phonon frequencies caused by elastic strains in the materials of the SL layers are interpreted. The dependence of intense Raman lines on the SL structure has been studied. Several ways have been proposed to use this information, both for identifying the type of interface and for estimating the structural parameters. The obtained information will be useful for the spectroscopic characterization of the silicon/oxide interfaces.

Dependence of the relaxation rate of coherent states on the number of correlated spins and the order of coherence / V. E. Zobov, A. A. Аннотация: The relaxation of the components of the multiple-quantum NMR spectrum of a solid under the effect of the dipole–dipole interactions during the evolution period is considered. It is taken into account that clusters of dynamically correlated spins of different sizes are formed in the preparatory period, and their degradation depends on their size and coherence order. To calculate the size distribution function of clusters and their degradation function, a physical model including relaxation processes is developed. Using this model, an analytical result for a multiple-quantum spectrum is obtained. Agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental dependences of the coherence degradation rates in adamantane scaled by the square root of the average cluster size. The parameters of the above functions are found from the comparison of these dependences.

Lateral photovoltaic effect -- MIS structures -- Interface states -- Schottky field
Аннотация: Charge transport in semiconductor devices is highly sensitive to light, which opens up wide application prospects. The lateral photovoltaic effect (LPE) is widely used in position sensitive detectors due to its high sensitivity to the light spot position. We report on the features of the LPE in silicon-based metal/insulator/semiconductor structures at helium temperatures. To investigate the LPE, Fe/SiO2/p-Si and Mn/SiO2/n-Si structures have been fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy. It has been found by studying the lateral photovoltage that the SiO2/Si interface plays a significant role in transport of photogenerated carriers, mainly via the interface states, which induce electron capture/emission processes at certain temperatures. The value of the photovoltage is likely affected not only by the metallic film thickness, but also by the substrate conductivity type and Schottky barrier. The effect of the magnetic field on the LPE is driven by two mechanisms. The first one is the well-known action of the Lorentz force on photogenerated carriers and the second one is shifting of the interface state energy levels. Basically, the magnetic field suppresses the contribution of the interface states to the LPE, which suggests that the interface-induced transport can be controlled magnetically.

Аннотация: In this study, topologically nontrivial edge and vortex bound states are described in the coexistence phase of chiral spin-singlet superconductivity and noncollinear spin ordering on a triangular lattice in the presence of few (up to four) vortices. We consider the topological phase transition induced by the magnetic order between the phase hosting Majorana modes and the initial phase of the chiral d-wave superconductivity supporting non-Majorana modes which is also topologically nontrivial. The change of the excitation spectrum at the critical point is obtained in both cases of open and periodic boundary conditions in the presence of vortices. It is proved that zero-energy Majorana modes localized at vortex cores are caused by noncollinear long-range magnetic ordering. Even though nearby excitation energies of subgap states including the edge-localized and vortex-localized states are very close to each other, the energy difference between different vortex bound states is an order of magnitude higher. This difference determines the energy gap for Majorana vortex modes separating them from other vortex bound states. It is found that even in the presence of noncollinear spin ordering its value can be estimated from the excitation energy of vortex bound states in the pure chiral d-wave state for the nonmagnetic case. By studying local density of states near the vortex cores the possibility to experimentally detect the described Majorana vortex modes by scanning tunneling microscopy is discussed. It is demonstrated that Majorana vortex modes and Majorana antivortex modes induced by noncollinear magnetism have different features in energy and spatially resolved density of states due to the chiral symmetry on the superconducting order parameter.

Аннотация: In modern experiments with hybrid superconducting (SC)/semiconducting nanowires the presence of zero-energy Andreev bound states (ABSs), characterized by a partial overlap of the Majorana wave functions, is a common problem that significantly complicates the detection of a genuine Majorana bound state (MBS). In this article, taking into account spatial inhomogeneity of experimentally investigated nanowire samples, we study interference transport features of a curved heterostructure in which two normal wires (or arms) are separated by a superconducting wire. Since Andreev reflection on the two N/S interfaces with smoothly changing electrostatic and SC pairing potentials results in the emergence of bound states, the low-energy interference transport is described in the framework of the model of two noninteracting Andreev levels or the Andreev double quantum dot. A set of limiting cases is analyzed allowing us to highlight the interference properties that are unique for the different types of ABSs, such as bulk ABS, inhomogeneous ABS, and MBS. In particular, considerable attention is paid to the features of the Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect. It is shown that the response of each state can be recognized analyzing both AB period and extrema positions of the conductance oscillations which take place without any fine-tuning of the system parameters.

Optical f-f transitions -- Magnetic reorientation transition -- Local properties in the optically excited states
Аннотация: Polarized absorption spectra of crystal Ho0.75Nd0.25Fe3(BO3)4 in the region of the 5I8→5F5 absorption band of Ho ions were investigated depending on temperature in the range of 5–20 K. Absorption spectra are decomposed into components of the Lorentz form. The spin-reorientation phase transition was detected at 6.9 K. The observed line position shifts during the reorientation transition were different for different lines, which indicated different local magnetic anisotropy of the Ho ion in its excited states. Significant changes in absorption line intensities as a function of temperature were observed during the reorientation transition and above. These were explained as a consequence of the change in even components of the local crystal field in excited states. These components mix the closely spaced 4f states. Distortion of local symmetry in the ground state was detected at one of the electron transitions.

Аннотация: Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been demonstrated as a powerful tool for trapping acoustic fields in an acoustic resonator. It has been widely recognized that symmetry-protected (SP) BICs result from symmetry incompatibility of some eigenmodes of a resonator with propagating modes of waveguides. The most typical example of SP BIC is the odd eigenmode of the resonator with the eigenfrequency embedded into the propagating band of even propagating eigenmodes of the waveguide. In this work, we consider a more sophisticated case of an acoustic cuboid resonator that is opened by the attachment of two cylindrical waveguides. We show that BICs can be sustained in an open acoustic resonator with reduced symmetry. For symmetrical positions of waveguides, the eigenmodes of the cuboid can also be classified as SP BICs and show different stability against the shifts of waveguides from the positions of symmetry of the cuboid. We fabricate a series of coupled waveguide resonators and experimentally verify the existence of these BICs by identifying the vanished linewidth of Fano resonance in transmission spectra. Besides, we also show that evanescent modes of waveguides play a role in the formation of BICs in a nonaxisymmetric waveguide-resonator system by tuning the angle θ between two waveguides. Consequently, the eigenmodes remain SP BICs for θ = 0° and θ = 180° but convert into accidental BICs at θ ≈ 85° or θ ≈ 275°. Such accidental BICs are also experimentally verified. Our results enrich the understanding of SP BICs and accidental BICs, and provide alternative methods of routing acoustic waves and designing acoustic devices requiring fine spectrum features, such as filters and sensors.

Аннотация: We suggest a prototype of a fiber-optic sensor system that is based on a simple singlemode-multimode-singlemode fiber structure and serial OTDR. The sensor has simple structure, made of affordable components, exploits easy measuring principle, immunes to EMI or RFI, and has confident response to measure key environment variables at a very long span. From the experimental results, the relationship between the temperature of water and output signal of the temperature sensor can be determined. After some maths, we can determine the temperature of the water by measuring the optical power loss of the at the SMS structure in a temperature range of 30 to 70 °C. This SMS structure is shown to carry out vibration measurement for 0.1-60 Hz frequencies with high accuracy. The OTDR exploited allows carrying out far-field measurements when SMS structure is spliced in long fiber-optic link.

Аннотация: We consider two parallel dielectric gratings (dual grating) which support accidental bound states in the continuum (BICs) mostly localized between gratings. As distinctive to true periodical BICs in an infinite dual grating, the enveloping intensity of quasi-BICs in a finite dual grating behaves as a standing wave. That behavior is a key property to trap nanoparticles into selected cells of the dual grating sorted by sizes of nanoparticles dragged by liquid flowing between gratings. For excitation of quasi-BIC with high quality factor by an electromagnetic plane wave with normal incidence and power 1 mW/µm2 we show high efficiency of sorting of nanoparticles by sizes.

density functional theory -- quantum state -- hole qubit -- electronic structure -- electric field
Аннотация: Using density functional theory in the noncollinear approximation, the behavior of quantum states of hole qubits in a Ge/Co:ZnO system was studied in this work. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure and the distribution of total charge density and hole states was carried out. It was shown that in the presence of holes, the energetically more favorable quantum state is the state |0˃, in contrast to the state |1˃ when there is no hole in the system. The favorability of hole states was found to be dependent on the polarity of the applied electric field.

bound state in the continuum -- optical Tamm state -- coupled modes -- cholesteric liquid crystal -- polarization-preserving metasurface
Аннотация: The circular polarization of light flips its handedness after a conventional metallic mirror reflection. Therefore, a polarization-preserving metasurface is a crucially important element in a series of chiral photonic structures. They include tunable cholesteric LCs and anisotropic photonic crystals. Chiral structures are rich in interfacial localized modes including Tamm states. In this report, coupled modes formed as a result of the interaction between two chiral optical Tamm states or a chiral optical Tamm state and a chiral Tamm plasmon polariton are analytically and numerically investigated. It is shown that the effective control of coupled modes can be carried out by changing the pitch of the cholesteric and the angle between the optical axis of the cholesteric and the polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror. The influence of the metasurface period on the spectral characteristics of coupled modes is investigated. The possibility of realizing a bound state in the continuum of the Friedrich–Wintgen type, resulting from the destructive interference of coupled modes, which leads to the collapse of the resonance line corresponding to the chiral optical Tamm state, has been demonstrated.

topological insulator -- edge states -- strongly correlated systems -- 2D systems
Аннотация: The effect of Coulomb interaction on the 2D second order topological superconductor is investigated taking into account different geometries of the boundary in the mainframe of the mean-field approximation. The spontaneous symmetry breaking, described earlier in Aksenov et al (2023 Phys. Rev.B 107 125401), is found to be robust against the boundary deformation. Meanwhile, the details of the state with spontaneously broken symmetry is found to be dependent on the specific boundary geometry. Considering different types of the boundary of the 2D system, it is demonstrated that the deviation of the electron density in the broken symmetry state is determined by the position of the zero-dimensional (second-order) excitations with nearly zero energy. The critical value of the Coulomb interaction, at which the transition occurs, is found to be determined by the energy of these excitations, which is non-zero due to overlapping of the wave-functions at different corners.

Field enhancement -- Infrared radiation -- Neural networks -- Refractive index -- Second harmonic generation -- Subwavelength gratings
Аннотация: In this Letter, we consider optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the infrared range supported by an all-dielectric metasurface in the form of subwavelength dielectric grating. We apply the random forest machine learning method to predict the frequency of the BICs as dependent on the optical and geometric parameters of the metasurface. It is found that the machine learning approach outperforms the standard least square method at the size of the dataset of ≈4000 specimens. It is shown that the random forest approach can be applied for predicting the subband in the infrared spectrum into which the BIC falls. The important feature parameters that affect the BIC wavelength are identified.

Nanoparticles -- Bound states in the continuum -- Optical tweezers -- Optical trapping
Аннотация: We consider a waveguide with a symmetrically integrated silicon cylinder. This design supports a symmetry protected bound state in the continuum (BIC) with Q-factor controlled by slight displacement of the cylinder. When excited by a TE10 electromagnetic wave, the BIC leads to giant optical forces near the cylinder. These forces have a strong impact on nanoparticles being dragged by liquid flow over the waveguide as they approach the cylinder. At the same time, the nanoparticles perturb the resonant frequency of the BIC with a value proportional to their volume and proximity to the cylinder. Therefore, the interplay between the resonant width of the BIC and the nanoparticle frequency perturbation determines the positions of the nanoparticles trapped around the cylinder. This paradigm demonstrates resonant self-trapping and sorting of nanoparticles by size through BIC excitation. We highlight the extreme sensitivity of these effects to the frequency of the injected TE wave. Additionally, we show that these results remain valid when considering the finite conductivity of metal waveguides.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in grating composed of infinitely long silicon rods of rectangular cross-section. We reveal merging off-Γ Friedrich-Wintgen BIC with symmetry protected BIC. We present CMT and multipole decomposition theory, complementing each other, to analyze the merging phenomenon. The theories show a crossover of the behavior of Q factor from standard inverse square law k-2x,z towards extremely fast boosting law k-6x,z in momentum space. In turn that crossover gives rise to another crossover from Q ~ N2 to Q ~ N3 for symmetry protected quasi-BIC in finite grating of N rods owing to suppression of radiation leakage of quasi-BIC mode from surface of grating. As a result, the Q factor of quasi-BIC is determined by residual leakage from ends of grating. We show numerically that this leakage can also be suppressed considerably if grating is stretched from the ends.
