Аннотация: The effect Rashba spin-orbit coupling has on transmission coefficient through a symmetric system with fermion path nonanalyticity points is illustrated using the example of a regular polygon-shaped chain. It is shown that the current passage through a device is blocked at the critical spin-orbit coupling values determined by the system’s geometry. At the near-critical spin-orbit coupling values, electron transport is possible only in a narrow range of energies.

Аннотация: The modes formed by two coupled chiral optical Tamm states localized at the interfaces between a photonic cholesteric liquid crystal conjugated with polarization-preserving anisotropic mirrors have been analytically and numerically investigated. These modes are only excited at the diffracting polarization of incident light. As the cholesteric layer thickness decreases, the spectral splitting of the localized state frequency is predicted. The splitting value depends on the crystal layer thickness. At the nondiffracting circular polarization, the localized modes are not excited, and the system becomes similar to the Fabry-Perot cavity containing an anisotropic helical structure.

Аннотация: We consider an optical response induced by bound states in the continuum (BICs) in arrays of dielectric spheres. By combining the quasi-mode expansion technique with coupled mode theory (CMT), we put forward a theory of the optical response by high-Q resonance surrounding BICs in momentum space. The central results are analytical expressions for the CMT parameters, which can be easily calculated from the eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of the interaction matrix of the scattering systems. The results obtained are verified in comparison against exact numerical solutions to demonstrate that the CMT approximation is capable of reproducing Fano features in the spectral vicinity of the BIC. Based on the quasi-mode expansion technique, we derived the asymptotic scaling law for the CMT parameters in the vicinity of the Γ-point. It is rigorously demonstrated that the linewidth in the CMT approximation exhibits different asymptotic behavior depending on the symmetry of the BIC.

Аннотация: The regularities of phase formation and thermal stability in Fe3Si(111)/Si(111) structure at stepped vacuum annealing (350, 450 and 550 °C) were investigated. The layer of 32 nm Fe3Si was deposited onto Si(111) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy at 260 °C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements demonstrated that the film thickness increases by ∼19 % at 350 °C annealing without changing the phase composition. The polycrystalline -FeSi sublayer was formed on the interface at 450 °C annealing. Further annealing at 550 °C led to the ∼ 80 nm polycrystalline film formation containing the crystallites of -FeSi, Fe5Si3, and β-FeSi2 phases.

Аннотация: Spectral manifestations of hybrid Tamm-microcavity modes in a 1D photonic crystal bounded with a silver layer and containing a nematic liquid crystal microcavity layer have been studied using numerical simulation. It is demonstrated that the hybrid modes can be effectively tuned owing to the high sensitivity of the liquid crystal to the temperature and external electric field variations. It is established that the effect of temperature on the transmission spectrum of the investigated structure is most pronounced at the point of the phase transition of the liquid crystal to the isotropic state, where the refractive index jump is observed.

Аннотация: An analog of an optical waveguide in the form of a chain of metallic nanoparticles has been investigated using modified cylindrical dielectric resonators in the microwave band. Similar to the plasma oscillations in spherical nanoparticles, the two lowest resonances of the dielectric resonator correspond to the dipole and quadrupole oscillatory modes. It is shown that a waveguide consisting of seven resonators exhibits high frequency selective properties and relatively low loss if the resonances of the quadrupole oscillatory modes are used to form its passband. The characteristics of the investigated waveguide remain almost unchanged at its bending by 90°, and the cross section of localization of the main part of the energy propagating in the waveguide is smaller than the electromagnetic wavelength by a factor of five, which approximately corresponds to the optical waveguides based on plasma oscillations in nanoparticles.

Аннотация: Focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation for transmission electron microscopy is a well established technique. However there are some problems related with high-quality large-scale (over 10 um) sample preparation of thin foils. In this work we demonstrate the successful preparation of such samples on example of ferrite steel sample and present the refined lift-out preparation technique, which was applied here. All sample preparation has been carried out in conventional single-beam FIB Hitachi FB-2100 with additional low-kV Ar+ ion polishing.

Аннотация: Owing to the nonlocal character of the Majorana state, the corresponding excitations are of great interest. It is demonstrated that the direct consequence of such nonlocality is the collapse of the Fano resonance manifesting itself in the conductance of an asymmetric interference device, the arms of which are connected by a one-dimensional topological superconductor. In the framework of the spinless model, it is shown that the predicted effect is associated with an increase in the multiplicity of the degeneracy of the zero-energy state of the structure arising at the critical point of the Kitaev model. Such an increase leads to the formation of a bound state in the continuum.

Аннотация: An optical-mechanical model has been developed to describe the transmittance, polarization and small-angle distribution of light scattered by an uniaxially-stretched polymer film containing the elongated ellipsoidal droplets of nematic liquid crystal. It is based on the approximations of Foldy-Twersky, anomalous diffraction, and single scattering. The spectral dependences of transmittances and polarizing abilities of the polymer dispersed liquid crystal films have been analyzed as well as the small-angle intensity distribution and the polarization degree of scattered light depending on the film thicknesses, refractive index of polymer matrix, sizes of droplets, their anisometry parameters, concentration, polydispersity, and optical axes orientation. The optical characteristics of films with homogeneous and inhomogeneous interfacial anchoring at the surface of liquid crystal droplets have been considered. The transmittance and polarizing ability of the films have been studied as functions of the angular aperture of the system recording scattered light. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

Аннотация: A model to describe light scattering by polymer film containing of monolayer of liquid crystal droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring of liquid crystal molecules at the polymer-droplet interface is developed. It is based on the interference approximation of the wave scattering theory. The director field distribution in the droplet volume is determined by solving the free energy density minimization problem using the relaxation method. The spatial distribution of droplets in the layer is described by the hard disks model. The amplitude scattering matrices of individual droplets are found in the anomalous diffraction approximation. The algorithm for numerical analysis of the characteristics of light scattered in a polymer film containing droplets at homogeneous and inhomogeneous surface anchoring is described in terms of the partial filling factors of the monolayer film. Electrically controllable symmetry breaking effect of angular distribution of light scattered by films containing droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring at the polymer-droplet interface is described and experimentally confirmed.

Аннотация: A new metamaterial is obtained on the basis of ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles immobilized in a xerogel matrix. Samples are synthesized by impregnating SiO2 hydrogel with iron (II) salts with subsequent drying and calcination. Аннотация: We observe experimentally symmetry protected bound states in the continuum (BICs) in the stack of ceramic disks. We analyze transformation of the resonant state into BIC with increasing of the number of disks theoretically and experimentally. In the experiment we measure the transmission spectra through the array of ceramic disks at GHz frequencies. We observe a quadratic growth of the Q-factor of quasi-BIC with the number of disks due to material losses. We cross-check the observation of BIC in the transmission spectra by measurement of the field profiles which are a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Аннотация: The Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the transmission probability of a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring between two electrodes are considered numerically where a time-periodical flux gamma(t)=gamma+lambda cos omega t is applied. Such a flux simulates a phase-coherent inelastic scattering due to the absorption/emission processes of modulation quanta. An increase of alternating flux amplitude lambda drastically changes the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the transmission though the exact period remains phi(0)=hc/e. A frequency dependence of the transmission has abrupt steps at omega=(E-E(F))/n, caused by the locking of the transmission in the nth channel where EF is the Fermi level. Moreover, for transmission of a narrow wave packet the time-periodical flux gives rise to two effects. The first is a fractioning of the input wave packet by the ring in such a way that the output wave function consists of a few separate wave packets. Their number, distance apart, and height essentially depend on the static flux gamma. The second effect is a strong space squeezing of the output wave packet.

Аннотация: The spectroscopic properties of an open large Bunimovich cavity are studied numerically in the framework of the effective Hamiltonian formalism. The cavity is opened by attaching two leads to it in four different ways. In some cases, the transmission takes place via standing waves with an intensity that closely follows the profile of the resonances. In other cases, short-lived and long-lived resonance states coexist. The short-lived states cause traveling waves in the transmission while the long-lived ones generate superposed fluctuations. The traveling waves oscillate as a function of energy. They are not localized in the interior of the large chaotic cavity. In all considered cases, the phase rigidity fluctuates with energy. It is mostly near to its maximum value and agrees well with the theoretical value for the two-channel case.

Аннотация: We consider a semiconductor (AlGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs) double-barrier resonant tunneling nanostructure (DBRTS), in which the bottom of the potential well is modulated by an external periodic potential V(t) = V-mod cos Omega t. We examine the resonance response to both mono-energetic and spatially localized incident electrons, extending previous results in three ways. First, we study numerically the resonant characteristics in the transmission probabilities as functions of both the electron's energy and the frequency of the external field. We find that new low-frequency resonant peaks appear in the frequency dependence of the transmission probabilities and discuss the origin and possible experimental observation of these peaks. Second, we develop an analytic perturbation theory (valid for small values of the parameter lambda = V-mod/h Omega) describing the processes of absorption and emission of single quanta of the modulation field and show that this perturbative treatment agrees well with the results of numerical calculations in the appropriate regions, up to and including the regime in which the one-quantum processes saturate. Third, for localized (Gaussian) incident wave packets, we show numerically that temporal modulations of the potential well in the DBRTS can induce spatial modulations in the transmitted and reflected wave packets. We develop a simple qualitative picture that explains our results. Finally, we estimate characteristic values of the parameters relevant for possible observation of these effects in laboratory experiments.

Аннотация: We consider a typical semiconductor resonant tunnelling GaAs/AlGaAs/GaAs nanostructure which forms a double-barrier potential with quasienergy levels corresponding to transition frequencies in the infrared and microwave regions. Two types of dynamical perturbation of the heterostructure in the form V-1(x, t) = V(1)x cos Omega t and V-2(t) = V-2 cos Omega t are considered. We analyse numerically a reconstruction of the electron transmission through the heterostructure and the current-voltage characteristics (IVC) under the influence of these dynamical perturbations. Both weak and strong perturbations are considered. We investigate the dependences of the transmission on the electron energy and the frequency of the external field with the main accent on the case where a frequency of the perturbation is tuned to a transition between quasienergies of the double-barrier structure. it is found that these resonant phenomena give rise to new peaks and dips in the IVC. In particular, it is shown that the dipole type of perturbation V-1(x, t) gives rise to a Rabi splitting of the transmission peaks and under certain conditions to a Rabi splining of the IVC peaks and dips. We demonstrate that dynamical perturbation may induce a direct current opposite to the direction of the applied voltage, and that this phenomenon takes the form of a sharp dip which has a resonant origin. It is observed that the dipole type of perturbation V-1(x, t) of laser radiation is more effective for tuning the IVC than the first perturbation V-2(t). Also absorption and emission of energy by an electron transmitted through the DBRTS are considered.
