Аннотация: The paper is short review of the papers devoted to the dynamics of the multilevel quantum systems affected by the external periodic field. The main attention is paid to the phenomenon of the quantum nonlinear resonance and the interaction of the two quantum nonlinear resonances, when the dynamics of the system is chaotic in the classical limit. The paper also contains the analysis of some physical systems where these phenomena take place. 30 figs. 37 refs.

RESONANCES
Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in low-contrast dielectric gratings. It is demonstrated that the BICs originate from the reduced guided modes on the effective dielectric slab with the permittivity equal to the average permittivity of the dielectric grating. In the case of isolated resonances, the positions of BICs can be found from two-wave dispersion relationships for guided leaky modes. In the case of the degeneracy between the two families of leaky modes, the system exhibits an avoided crossing of resonances. In the spectral vicinity of the avoided crossing the transmittance as well as the emergence of BICs is described in the framework of the generic formalism by Volya and Zelevinsky [Phys. Rev. C 67, 054322 ( 2003)] with a single fitting parameter.

Аннотация: We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from ε1 to ε2. For ε2 = 1 in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric disks with permittivity ε1. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BICs are classified by orbital angular momentum m and the Bloch wave vector beta directed along the rod. For m = 0 and β = 0 the symmetry protected BICs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities. More involved BICs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of the rod at a fixed dielectric constant. The existence of robust Bloch BICs with β ≠ 0, m = 0 is demonstrated. Asymptotic limits to a homogeneous rod and to very thin disks are also considered.

Аннотация: We show that a circular periodic array of silicon dielectric cylinders supports nearly bound states in the continuum (BICs) propagating along the cylinders. These propagating nearly BICs with extremely large-Q factors are surrounded by resonant modes weakly leaking into the radiation continuum. We present leaky zones in the form of dispersion curves for complex eigenfrequencies dependent on propagation constant kz, with the wave vector directed along the cylinders in the vicinity of different types of BICs. Symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to squared propagation constant Γ∼k2z; the widths of non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs behave as Γ∼(kz−kc)2, where kc and non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to k4z. The latter propagating nearly BICs can serve for the transmission of a electromagnetic signal paving a way to a different type of optical fiber. We also demonstrate weakly leaking resonant modes which carry orbital angular momentum.

Аннотация: We consider light propagation above the light line in arrays of spherical dielectric nanoparticles. It is demonstrated numerically that quasi-bound leaky modes of the array can propagate both stationary waves and light pulses to a distance of 60 wavelengths at the frequencies close to the bound states in the radiation continuum. A semi-analytical estimate for decay rates of the guided waves is found to match the numerical data to a good accuracy. © 2016 Optical Society of America.

Аннотация: We consider nonlinear effects in scattering of light by a periodic structure supporting optical bound states in the continuum. In the spectral vicinity of the bound states the scattered electromagnetic field is resonantly enhanced triggering optical bistability. Using coupled mode approach we derive a nonlinear equation for the amplitude of the resonant mode associated with the bound state. We show that such an equation for the isolated resonance can be easily solved yielding bistable solutions which are in quantitative agreement with the full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. The coupled mode approach allowed us to cast the the problem into the form of a driven nonlinear oscillator and analyze the onset of bistability under variation of the incident wave. The results presented drastically simplify the analysis nonlinear Maxwell's equations and, thus, can be instrumental in engineering optical response via bound states in the continuum.

Аннотация: We present a two-dimensional photonic crystal design of four defect dielectric rods, which form a microcavity with eigenfrequencies residing in the propagating band of a directional waveguide. In this system, a nonrobust bound state in the continuum (BSC) occurs as a result of full destructive interference of the monopole and quadrupole modes, with the same parity at certain values of the material parameters of the defect rods. Due to the Kerr effect, a robust BSC arises in a self-adaptive way without necessity to tune the material parameters. The absence of the superposition principle in that nonlinear system gives rise to coupling of the BSC with injected light, resulting in a novel transmission resonance. Аннотация: We analyze the transport phenomena of two-dimensional quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape. The quantum mechanical analysis is performed by means of the poles of the S matrix while the classical analysis is based on the motion of a free particle inside the cavity along trajectories with a different number of bounces at the boundary. The value of the conductance depends on the manner in which the leads are attached to the cavity. The Fourier transform of the transmission amplitudes is compared with the length of the classical paths. There is good agreement between classical and quantum mechanical results when the conductance is achieved mainly by special short-lived states such as whispering gallery modes and bouncing ball modes. In these cases, also the localization of the wave functions agrees with the picture of the classical paths. The S matrix is calculated classically and compared with the transmission coefficients of the quantum mechanical calculations for five modes in each lead. The number of modes coupled to the special states is effectively reduced.

Аннотация: The existence of bound states in the continuum (BIC) manifests a general wave phenomenon first predicted in quantum mechanics by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner [J. von Neumann and E. Wigner, Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. Today it is being actively explored in photonics, radiophysics, acoustics, and hydrodynamics. We report an experimental observation of an electromagnetic bound state in the radiation continuum in a one-dimensional array of dielectric particles. By measurement of the transmission spectra of the ceramic disk chain at GHz frequencies, we demonstrate how a resonant state in the vicinity of the center of the Brillouin zone turns into a symmetry-protected BIC with increase in the number of the disks. We estimate a number of the disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain could be considered practically as infinite. The presented analysis is supplemented by measurements of the near fields of the symmetry-protected BIC. All measurements are in a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulation and analytical model based on a tight-binding approximation. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with bound states in the continuum that opens up horizons for the development of optical and radio-frequency metadevices.

Аннотация: We consider the spontaneous creation of a dc voltage across a strongly coupled semiconductor superlattice subjected to THz radiation. We show that the dc voltage may be approximately proportional either to an integer or to a half-integer multiple of the frequency of the applied ac field, depending on the ratio of the characteristic scattering rates of conducting electrons. For the case of an ac field frequency less than the characteristic scattering rates, we demonstrate the generation of an unquantized dc voltage.
