Аннотация: We describe an effect of the generation of direct current which may arise in semiconductors or semiconductor microstructures due to a mixing of coherent electromagnetic radiations of commensurate frequencies. The effect is, in essence, due to a nonparabolicity of the electron energy bands and is stronger in systems where this nonparabolicity is greater. We have made exact calculations in the framework of the Kane model, applicable to narrow-gap semiconductors and the tight-binding model which we employ for a description of a semiconductor superlattice.

Аннотация: We examine the spatial evolution of lightwaves in a nonlinear photonic crystal with a quadratic nonlinearity, when a second harmonic and a sum-frequency generation are simultaneously quasi-phase-matched. Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of the investigation of the high-frequency susceptibility of a layered ferromagnetic structure in which, apart from a periodic change in the magnetic anisotropy parameter from layer to layer, this parameter varies along layers according to a random law (the superlattice with two-dimensional phase inhomogeneities). The evolution of the frequency dependence of the imaginary part of the averaged Green's function in the range of the energy gap (band gap) in the spectrum of waves propagating along the superlattice axis due to the change in the relative root-mean-square fluctuations of the phase gamma 2 has been studied at the boundaries of the odd Brillouin zones. It has been found that, for all odd Brillouin zones, the imaginary part of the Green's function exhibits a universal behavior: the peak corresponding to the edge of the band gap with a lower frequency remains unchanged, and the peak corresponding to the edge of the band gap with a higher frequency is smoothed with an increase in the quantity gamma(2). These effects, which were initially revealed at the boundary of the first Brillouin zone of the sinusoidal superlattice, have been explained, as before, by the specific features of the energy conservation laws for the incident and scattered waves in the lattice with two-dimensional inhomogeneities. It has been demonstrated that an increase in the Brillouin zone number leads to a decrease in the value of gamma(2) at which the peak at the edge of the band gap with a higher frequency disappears.

Аннотация: To describe a partially randomized multilayer structure with arbitrary thicknesses of the interfaces between layers, we introduce a model in which the dependence of a material parameter along the axis of such a Superlattice is described by a Jacobian elliptic sine function with a random spatial modulation of its period. Both one- and three-dimensional inhomogeneities of the period are considered. We develop the correlation function for this model, and investigate the dispersion law and damping of averaged waves in this superlattice. The dependencies of the widths of the gaps in the spectrum and the damping at the boundaries of all odd Brillouin zones, on the thicknesses of the interfaces, and on the dimensionality, intensity, and correlation wave number of the inhomogeneities are found. It is shown that experimental investigations of the widths of the gaps and damping for several Brillouin zones could permit, in principle, determining all parameters of the superlattice as well as the parameters of the inhomogeneities from these spectral characteristics.

Аннотация: This paper introduces a semi-analytical method for calculating the Hall conductivity in the single-band approximation. The method goes beyond the linear response theory and thus, it formally imposes no limitation on the electric-field magnitude. It is shown that, when the Bloch frequency exceeds the cyclotron frequency, the Hall current decreases with increasing electric field. The obtained results can be directly applied to the cold Bose atoms in a 2D optical lattice, where the single-band approximation is well justified. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Аннотация: This Letter studies the dynamics of a quantum particle in 2D lattices with on-site disorder in the presence of a static field. It is shown that the particle is localized along the field direction, while in the orthogonal direction to the field it shows diffusive dynamics for algebraically large times. For weak disorder an analytical expression for the diffusion coefficient is obtained by mapping the problem to a band random matrix. This expression is confirmed by numerical simulations of the particle's dynamics, which also indicate the existence of a universal equation for the diffusion coefficient, valid for an arbitrary disorder strength.

Аннотация: The magnetization of Fe/Si multilayers, grown by thermal evaporation in an ultrahigh vacuum system, was investigated at high temperatures. Magnetization and its temperature dependence up to a high temperature of 800 K depend on individual Fe layer thickness d(Fe). This dependence is the result of the formation of an Fe-Si interface layer (nonmagnetic phase) during the synthetic procedure. The fraction of this Fe-Si nonmagnetic phase is estimated versus dFe. At temperatures higher than 400 K an irreversible decrease in the magnetization occurs. A quantitative analysis of this irreversible behavior is proposed in terms of an exponential diffusion-like kinetic equation for the reaction that produces the Fe-Si nonmagnetic phase. The coefficients of the rate equation are the activation energy E(a) and the prefactor D(0), which have been determined for different d(Fe). (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. Аннотация: A systematic study of the iron–silicon interfaces formed upon preparation of (Fe/Si) multilayers has been performed by the combination of modern and powerful techniques. Samples were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy under ultrahigh vacuum onto Si wafers or single crystalline Ag(100) buffer layers grown on GaAs(100). The morphology of these films and their interfaces was studied by a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Si-on-Fe interface thickness and roughness were determined to be 1.4(1) nm and 0.6(1) nm, respectively. Moreover, determination of the stable phases formed at both Fe-on-Si and Si-on-Fe interfaces was performed using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy on multilayers with well separated Si-on-Fe and Fe-on-Si interfaces. It is shown that while a fraction of Fe remains as α-Fe, the rest has reacted with Si, forming the paramagnetic FeSi phase and a ferromagnetic Fe rich silicide. We conclude that there is an identical paramagnetic c-Fe1−xSi silicide sublayer in both Si-on-Fe and Fe-on-Si interfaces, whereas an asymmetry is revealed in the composition of the ferromagnetic silicide sublayer.
