Аннотация: Dielectric resonances in the 37-42 GHz frequency band in the single crystal barium hexaferrite that occur well below the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) have been investigated. Sample dimensions have been chosen so that the mode frequency is lower than the spin-wave excitation (in this case, the natural domain resonance) frequency. Such dielectric mode frequencies, being a function of both permittivity and permeability, are magnetic field H tunable. Here, we report on below-FMR magnetodielectric resonance (MDR) axially magnetized barium hexaferrites and their H-tuning characteristics. Our studies reveal H-tuning by up to 2.5 GHz and the tuning is the largest when the ferrite is in a magnetically unsaturated state. A theory for the MDR is presented and a fairly good agreement between experimental data and theory has been obtained. Tunable millimeter wave phase shifters and isolators utilizing the below-FMR dielectric resonances have been demonstrated.

Аннотация: We investigate the dynamic susceptibility and one-dimensional density of states in an initially sinusoidal superlattice containing simultaneously 2D phase inhomogeneities simulating correlated rough-nesses of superlattice interfaces and 3D amplitude inhomogeneities of the superlattice layer materials. The analytic expression for the averaged Green's function of the sinusoidal superlattice with two phase inhomogeneities is derived in the Bourret approximation. It is shown that the effect of increasing asymmetry in the peak heights of dynamic susceptibility at the Brillouin zone boundary of the superlattice, which was discovered earlier [15] upon an increase in root-mean-square (rms) fluctuations, also takes place upon an increase in the correlation wavenumber of inhomogeneities. However, the peaks in this case also become closer, and the width and depth of the gap in the density of states decrease thereby. It is shown that the enhancement of rms fluctuations of 3D amplitude inhomogeneities in a superlattice containing 2D phase inhomogeneities suppresses the effect of dynamic susceptibility asymmetry and leads to a slight broadening of the gap in the density of states and a decrease in its depth. Targeted experiments aimed at detecting the effects studied here would facilitate the development of radio-spectroscopic and optical methods for identifying the presence of inhomogeneities of various dimensions in multilayer magnetic and optical structures.

Аннотация: Problems of obtaining Green's function and using it for studying the structure of scalar electromagnetic fields in a sinusoidal superlattice are considered. An analytical solution of equation in the k-space for Green's function is found. Green's function in the r-space is obtained by both the numerical and the approximate analytical Fourier transformation of that solution. It is shown, that from the experimental study of Green's function in the k-space the position of the plane radiation source relative to the extremes of the dielectric permittivity ?(z) can be determined. The relief map of Green's function in the r-space shows that the structure of the field takes the form of chains of islets in the plane ?z, the number of which increases with increasing the distance from a radiation source. This effect leads to different frequency dependences of Green's function at different distances from the radiation source and can be used to measure the distance to the internal source. The real component of Green's function and its spatial decay in the forbidden zones in the near field is investigated. The local density of states, depending on the position of the source in the superlattice, is calculated.

Аннотация: This study presents a theoretical approach to analyze the influence of kappa distributed streaming ions and magnetized electrons on the plasma wave propagation in the presence of dust by employing two-potential theory. In particular, analytical expressions under certain conditions are derived for various modes of propagation comprising of kinetic Alfven wave streaming instability, two stream instability, and dust acoustic and whistler waves. A dispersion relation for kinetic Alfven-like streaming instability has been derived. The effects of dust particles and Lorentzian index on the growth rates and the threshold streaming velocity for the excitation of the instability are examined. The streaming velocity is observed to be destabilizing for slow motion and stabilizing for fast streaming motions. It is also observed that the presence of magnetic field and superthermal particles hinders the growth rate of instability. Possible applications to various space and astrophysical situations are discussed. (C) 2010 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3491336]

Аннотация: The transmittance D(omega), reflectance R(omega), and dispersion omega(k) are investigated for waves of various nature propagating through a one-dimensional superlattice (multilayer structure) with arbitrary thickness of the interlayer boundary. The dependences of the band gap widths Deltaomega(m) and their positions in the wave spectrum of the superlattice on the interlayer boundary thickness d and the band number m are calculated. Calculations are performed in terms of the modified coupled-mode theory (MCMT) using the frequency dependence of R(omega), as well as in the framework of perturbation theory using the function omega(k), which made it possible to estimate the accuracy of the MCMT method; the MCMT method is found to have a high accuracy in calculating the band gap widths and a much lower accuracy in determining the gap positions. It is shown that the m dependence of Deltaomega(m) for electromagnetic (or elastic) waves is different from that for spin waves. Furthermore, the widths of the band gaps with m = 1 and 2 are practically independent of d, whereas the widths of all gaps for m 2 depend strongly on d. Experimental measurements of these dependences allow one to determine the superlattice interface thicknesses by using spectral methods. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We study bound states of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open geometry given by two straight leads of the same width which cross at an angle theta. Such a four-terminal junction with a tunable theta can realized experimentally if a right-angle structure is filled by a ferrite. It is known that for theta=90degrees there is one proper bound state and one eigenvalue embedded in the continuum. We show that the number of eigenvalues becomes larger with increasing asymmetry and the bound-state energies are increasing as functions of theta in the interval (0,90degrees). Moreover, states which are sufficiently strongly bound exist in pairs with a small energy difference and opposite parities. Finally, we discuss how the bound states transform with increasing theta into quasibound states with a complex wave vector.

Аннотация: The properties of localized electromagnetic modes in a one-dimensional photonic crystal with a structural defect layer were studied. The role of the defect was played by an anisotropic nematic liquid crystal layer. The frequency and the damping factor of defect modes were shown to substantially depend on the defect layer thickness and the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic. The transmission spectra of photonic crystals with one and two lattice defects were studied. Taking into account the special feature of nematic liquid crystals distinguishing them from usual crystals, namely, large permittivity anisotropy, it was shown that the transmission spectrum of the photonic crystal could be controlled by varying the orientation of the optical axis of the nematic, for instance, under the action of an external electric field. Аннотация: A method based on the kinetic equations for Markov processes is found which is effective within as well as beyond the scope of conventional restrictions - one-dimensional stochastic equations with given initial conditions. For the first time the problem of finding averages for linear systems with nonadditive random influence, typical models of the theory of wave propagation in random media, is solved to obtain exact solutions.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded with a resonance-absorbing nanocomposite layer are investigated. The bulk concentrations of metal nanoparticles dispersed in a transparent nanocomposite matrix are determined at which the effective permittivity takes near-zero values. The transmission, reflection and absorption spectra of the investigated structures at the normal incidence of light are calculated. The demonstrated possibility of formation of the optical Tamm states at the interface between the photonic crystal and nanocomposite is ensured by the near-zero real and imaginary parts of the permittivity or only the imaginary part of the permittivity at the zero real part. The specific features of field localization at the optical Tamm state frequencies are examined.
