Аннотация: We investigate numerically the propagation of steady-state monochromatic surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in curved chains of metal nanoparticles of various spheroidal shapes. We discuss the SPP propagation (decay of the amplitude), the polarization conversion due to coupling of orthogonally polarized SPPs, and the electromagnetic field localization in the near-field vicinity of a chain.

Аннотация: We present a two-dimensional photonic crystal design of four defect dielectric rods, which form a microcavity with eigenfrequencies residing in the propagating band of a directional waveguide. In this system, a nonrobust bound state in the continuum (BSC) occurs as a result of full destructive interference of the monopole and quadrupole modes, with the same parity at certain values of the material parameters of the defect rods. Due to the Kerr effect, a robust BSC arises in a self-adaptive way without necessity to tune the material parameters. The absence of the superposition principle in that nonlinear system gives rise to coupling of the BSC with injected light, resulting in a novel transmission resonance. Аннотация: We consider electron transport in a zigzag quantum wire by the effect of finger gate potential. Using a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian, we calculate resonance positions and widths to show that the resonance widths are easily governed by the gate potential. In particular, the resonance width can be enforced to be equal to zero, which leads to an electron localization with the Fermi energy embedded in the propagation band of the wire, i.e., the bound state in the continuum (BSC). We show that, for positive values of the potential, a zigzag wire becomes a Fabry-Perot resonator to give rise to BSC too.

Аннотация: We have studied numerically the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in linear periodic chains of plasmonic nanoparticles of different shapes. The chains are deposited on top of a thick dielectric substrate. While in many commonly considered cases the substrate tends to suppress the SPP propagation, we have found that this adverse effect is practically absent in the case when the nanoparticles have the shape of oblate spheroids with sufficiently small aspect ratio (e.g., nanodisks) whose axes of symmetry coincide with the axis of the chain. © 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Аннотация: We study bound states of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open geometry given by two straight leads of the same width which cross at an angle theta. Such a four-terminal junction with a tunable theta can realized experimentally if a right-angle structure is filled by a ferrite. It is known that for theta=90degrees there is one proper bound state and one eigenvalue embedded in the continuum. We show that the number of eigenvalues becomes larger with increasing asymmetry and the bound-state energies are increasing as functions of theta in the interval (0,90degrees). Moreover, states which are sufficiently strongly bound exist in pairs with a small energy difference and opposite parities. Finally, we discuss how the bound states transform with increasing theta into quasibound states with a complex wave vector.

Аннотация: We analyze the transport phenomena of two-dimensional quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape. The quantum mechanical analysis is performed by means of the poles of the S matrix while the classical analysis is based on the motion of a free particle inside the cavity along trajectories with a different number of bounces at the boundary. The value of the conductance depends on the manner in which the leads are attached to the cavity. The Fourier transform of the transmission amplitudes is compared with the length of the classical paths. There is good agreement between classical and quantum mechanical results when the conductance is achieved mainly by special short-lived states such as whispering gallery modes and bouncing ball modes. In these cases, also the localization of the wave functions agrees with the picture of the classical paths. The S matrix is calculated classically and compared with the transmission coefficients of the quantum mechanical calculations for five modes in each lead. The number of modes coupled to the special states is effectively reduced.

Аннотация: We consider the spontaneous creation of a dc voltage across a strongly coupled semiconductor superlattice subjected to THz radiation. We show that the dc voltage may be approximately proportional either to an integer or to a half-integer multiple of the frequency of the applied ac field, depending on the ratio of the characteristic scattering rates of conducting electrons. For the case of an ac field frequency less than the characteristic scattering rates, we demonstrate the generation of an unquantized dc voltage.

Аннотация: We show the existence of bound states in the continuum (BICs) in quantum billiards (QBs) that are opened by attaching single-channel leads to them. They may be observed by varying an external parameter continuously, e.g., the shape of the QB. At some values of the parameter, resonance states with vanishing decay width (the BICs) occur. They are localized almost completely in the interior of the closed system. The phenomenon is shown analytically to exist in the simplest case of a two level QB and is complemented by numerical calculations for a real QB.

Аннотация: The paper is short review of the papers devoted to the dynamics of the multilevel quantum systems affected by the external periodic field. The main attention is paid to the phenomenon of the quantum nonlinear resonance and the interaction of the two quantum nonlinear resonances, when the dynamics of the system is chaotic in the classical limit. The paper also contains the analysis of some physical systems where these phenomena take place. 30 figs. 37 refs.

Аннотация: We consider light propagation above the light line in arrays of spherical dielectric nanoparticles. It is demonstrated numerically that quasi-bound leaky modes of the array can propagate both stationary waves and light pulses to a distance of 60 wavelengths at the frequencies close to the bound states in the radiation continuum. A semi-analytical estimate for decay rates of the guided waves is found to match the numerical data to a good accuracy. © 2016 Optical Society of America.
