The known crystal structures of borate compounds with general composition AI2MIII 2B2O7 (AI: Na, K, Cs, Rb) have been considered. The structures in space groups P63/m, P-31c, P321 and P21/c have been found depending on cation combination. Criterion k = (r(MIII)+r(B)+2r(O))/r(AI) has been formulated and it controls the formation of trigonal K2Al2B2O7 (KABO) type structure. The existence of noncentrosymmetric KABO-type borates is possible over the range of k = 2.7 – 2.06. This range is promising for searching new borate crystals and solid solutions with pronounced
nonlinear

The structures of K 2(1-x)Rb 2xAl 2B 2O 7, x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, have been determined in space group P321 through Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data. The solubility limit in K 2(1-x)Rb 2xAl 2B 2O 7 crystals has been estimated as x similar to 0.83-0.9.
Nonlinear
optical properties of KRbAl 2B 2O 7 have been verified by powder Kurtz-Perry method. Mechanisms of structural parameter variation in K 2Al 2B 2O 7 crystal family have been discussed.

Novel concepts of
nonlinear
-optical (NLO) photonic metamaterial are proposed. They concern photonic materials that support backward electromagnetic or vibration waves (BWs) and provide coherent
nonlinear
-optical energy exchange between ordinary and BWs as applied to three- and four-wave mixing processes. Three different classes of materials which support BWs are considered: plasmonic negative-index (NI) metamaterials (NIMs), metamaterials with specially engineered spatial dispersion of the nanoscopic building blocks, such as standing carbon nanotubes, and crystals that support optical phonons with negative group velocity. The possibility to exploit ordinary crystals instead of plasmonic NLO metamaterials that are very challenging to engineer is proposed. It is shown that extraordinary
nonlinear
optical frequency-conversion propagation processes attributed to NIMs can be mimicked in the proposed metamaterials. It is also shown that the detrimental effects of strong losses can be mitigated in the short-pulse regimes, which exhibit exotic properties when ordinary and BWs are involved in the NLO coupling. Comparative review of unparallel properties of coherent energy exchange between ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in NIMs and between ordinary electromagnetic waves coupled through backward vibration waves is given. Unique photonic devices are proposed.

Аннотация:
Room-temperature modification of potassium oxyfluorotungstate, G(2)-K3WO3F3, has been prepared by low-temperature chemical route and single crystal growth. Wide optical transparency range of 0.3-9.4 mu m and forbidden band gap E-g=4.32 eV have been obtained for G(2)-K3WO3F3 crystal. Meanwhile, its electronic structure has been calculated with the first-principles calculations. The good agreement between the theorectical and experimental results have been achieved. Furthermore, G(2)-K3WO3F3 is predicted to possess the relatively large
nonlinear

Аннотация:
Random quasi-phase-matched frequency doubling of fs pulses to the deep UV was obtained in 1D
nonlinear
photonic crystal (NPC) of strontium tetraborate. Tuning range of generated radiation is from 187.5 to 215 nm. The spectrum of generated radiation consists from series of peaks with the width of order of 1 angstrom. These peaks are the manifestation of the NPC band structure. Using fs oscillator as the fundamental radiation source, maximum average power of generated radiation is of order 1 mu W, the enhancement factor with respect to monodomain sample being of order of several hundred. The red rotational shift of NPC band structure is experimentally demonstrated.

The properties of NPC structures in strontium tetraborate are analyzed. Different types of NPC structures are revealed that possess different
nonlinear
properties, and their spectral dependences of frequency conversion efficiency are calculated and compared. Experimental study of these structures is reported for the process of doubling of the second harmonic of fs Ti:S laser. Tuning of generated radiation is obtained in the range 187.5 - 232.5 nm, with extreme insensitivity to the angular orientation of NPC. Behavior of tuning curve along investigated fundamental wave range is similar in all studied samples, but efficiency obtained depends on the type of structure. Conversion efficiency and spectral quality of generated radiation is experimentally shown to grow better when using NPC with improved structure. Prospects of VUV converter on a single NPC are discussed. NPCs of SBO are demonstrated to be useful for autocorrelation diagnostics both in random QPM geometry and in the geometry of
nonlinear
diffraction from virtual beam.

photonic crystal of strontium tetraborate was studied theoretically and experimentally in both frequency and time domains. Spectral features of second harmonic radiation were measured in the course of mapping the
nonlinear
photonic crystal structure. The local second harmonic spectrum demonstrates complex angular behavior within the beam cross section. The spectral width of the second harmonic radiation is found to be fundamental beam size-dependent, and optimal focusing should be used for exact conversion of the fundamental spectrum into the second harmonic one. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with calculations. Maximum second harmonic generation efficiency was up to 2.1% at pumping by a femtosecond oscillator. We consider light transmission in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical
nonlinear
defects positioned symmetrically aside the waveguide. With the coupled mode theory, we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case and preserves the symmetry. In the second scenario, the symmetry is broken because of different light intensities at the defects. In the third scenario, the intensities at the defects are equal but phases of complex amplitudes are different. That results in a vortical power flow between the defects similar to the dc Josephson effect if the input power over the waveguide is applied and the defects are coupled. All of these phenomena agree well with computations based on an expansion of the electromagnetic field into optimally adapted photonic Wannier functions in a 2D photonic crystal.

Аннотация:
We consider light transmission in a directional photonic crystal waveguide that holds a
nonlinear
defect with two resonant dipole modes within the light propagation band. For the defect positioned on the center line of the waveguide, there are two ways to break the mirror symmetry with respect to either light intensity or light phase. The latter results in a giant vortex of the Poynting vector of the power current within the defect exceeding the input current by, at least, two orders of magnitude. We also consider the breaking of symmetry relative to the mirror reflection with respect to the cross-sectional axis of the waveguide when light is injected equally into both ends of the waveguide. This leads to different light outputs determined by the vorticity of the optical vortex.

We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold
nonlinear
defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of symmetry.

Аннотация:
We present stable symmetry breaking solutions in a
nonlinear
optical cavity with dipole eigenmodes embedded into the propagation band of a directional photonic crystal waveguide for symmetric injecting condition. We demonstrate how this phenomenon can be exploited for all-optical switching of light transmission from the one side of the waveguide to another by application of input pulses. When the light injected to both sides of the waveguide has equal intensities but different phases, we reveal a wealth of new solutions. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America

Dispersion of refraction coefficients of orthorhombic BiB3O6 in the wavelength range between 435.8 and 1060 nm is studied,
nonlinear
optical coefficients are determined, and phase matching angles, angular and spectral bandwidths for second harmonic generation processes are calculated. delta-BiBO may be suitable for doubling of lasers with a wavelength in the 1.3 mu m region as well as the matrix for self-doubling lasing media. We show that two
nonlinear
resonant cavities aligned between two parallel waveguides can support self-induced bound states in the continuum (BSCs). These BSCs are symmetrical relative to an inversion of the waveguides and to inversion of the transport axis. Due to this BSCs can drop an incident wave from one waveguide to another with very high efficiency. We show also that the frequency of the efficient channel dropping can be tuned by injecting power. All these results are in good agreement with numerical solutions of the Maxwell equations in a two-dimensional photonic crystal of GaAs rods holding two parallel waveguides and two defects made of a Kerr medium. We consider a system of two or four
nonlinear
sites coupled with binary chain waveguides. When a monochromatic wave is injected into the first (symmetric) propagation channel, the presence of cubic nonlinearity can lead to symmetry breaking, giving rise to emission of antisymmetric wave into the second (antisymmetric) propagation channel of the waveguides. We found that in the case of
nonlinear
plaquette, there is a domain in the parameter space where neither symmetry-preserving nor symmetry-breaking stable stationary solutions exit. As a result, injection of a monochromatic symmetric wave gives rise to emission of nonsymmetric satellite waves with energies differing from the energy of the incident wave. Thus, the response exhibits nonmonochromatic behavior. В© 2013 American Physical Society.
