Аннотация: We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of symmetry.

Аннотация: The authors propose a way of reconstructing the Raman tensor by studying the angular dependences of the intensities of the Raman lines of unoriented microcrystals. The technique is verified using familiar calomel Hg2Cl2 crystals. It is shown that the lines on DUT-8 (Ni) crystals indicating phases with open and closed pores have different types of symmetries. The technique can be used to reconstruct the Raman tensor for any unoriented crystalline sample.

Аннотация: Based on the periodic Anderson model, microscopic expressions for the Ginzburg–Landau expansion coefficients in a phase with superconducting and antiferromagnetic order parameters are obtained. Temperature dependences of the order parameters near the temperature of the transition to this phase are established. The emergence of anomalous properties upon the quantum phase transition to the phase with two order parameters is investigated. This transition is accompanied by drastic reconstruction of the density of states, reflected by the interplay between superconductivity and antiferromagnetism. © 2016, Allerton Press, Inc.

Аннотация: Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been demonstrated as a powerful tool for trapping acoustic fields in an acoustic resonator. It has been widely recognized that symmetry-protected (SP) BICs result from symmetry incompatibility of some eigenmodes of a resonator with propagating modes of waveguides. The most typical example of SP BIC is the odd eigenmode of the resonator with the eigenfrequency embedded into the propagating band of even propagating eigenmodes of the waveguide. In this work, we consider a more sophisticated case of an acoustic cuboid resonator that is opened by the attachment of two cylindrical waveguides. We show that BICs can be sustained in an open acoustic resonator with reduced symmetry. For symmetrical positions of waveguides, the eigenmodes of the cuboid can also be classified as SP BICs and show different stability against the shifts of waveguides from the positions of symmetry of the cuboid. We fabricate a series of coupled waveguide resonators and experimentally verify the existence of these BICs by identifying the vanished linewidth of Fano resonance in transmission spectra. Besides, we also show that evanescent modes of waveguides play a role in the formation of BICs in a nonaxisymmetric waveguide-resonator system by tuning the angle θ between two waveguides. Consequently, the eigenmodes remain SP BICs for θ = 0° and θ = 180° but convert into accidental BICs at θ ≈ 85° or θ ≈ 275°. Such accidental BICs are also experimentally verified. Our results enrich the understanding of SP BICs and accidental BICs, and provide alternative methods of routing acoustic waves and designing acoustic devices requiring fine spectrum features, such as filters and sensors.

Аннотация: We report on the emergence of new lines in the optical spectrum of the PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal at the magnetic ordering temperature. The transitions between singlet crystal-field sublevels of Pr3+ ion with the same transformational properties, strictly forbidden for the trigonal D-3 point symmetry of this ion in PrFe3(BO3)(4), appear below the Neel temperature and grow in intensity as a square of the order parameter. We show that the phenomenon originates from the mixing of wave functions of different Pr3+ sublevels by the Pr-Fe exchange interaction.

Аннотация: A new optical state at the boundary of a chiral medium whose dielectric tensor has a helical symmetry is described analytically and numerically. The case of zero tangential wavenumber is considered. The state localized near the boundary does not transfer energy along this boundary and decreases exponentially with the distance from the boundary. The penetration of the field into the chiral medium is blocked at wavelengths corresponding to the photonic band gap and close to the pitch of the helix. The polarization of light near the boundary has the same sign of chirality as the helical symmetry. It is shown that the homogeneous environment or a substrate should exhibit anisotropic metallic reflection. The spectral manifestation of the state is determined by the angle between the optical axes of the media at the interface. A state at the interface between a cholesteric liquid crystal and an anisotropic metal–dielectric nanocomposite was considered as an example. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: A generalized tight-binding (GTB) method is developed to calculate quasi-particle band structure with explicit account for strong electronic correlations. The GTB method combines exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital P-d model Hamiltonian within the unit cell and the perturbation theory in the Hubbard X-operators form for the inter-cell hopping and interactions. For undoped cuprates we obtain the valence band structure in excellent agreement with ARPES data, evolution of the band structure with doping with an in-gap state at small doping, impurity-like band at higher doping to optimally doped metal. The effective low-energy Hamiltonian has the form of singlet-triplet t-J model. For ruthenates the t-J-I model is proposed with both antiferromagnetic J and ferromagnetic I couplings. In the strong correlation limit, the mean-field theory of superconductivity results in d-wave singlet pairing mediated by J (cuprates) and p-wave triplet one mediated by I (ruthenates) with ratio T-c((d))/T-c((p)) similar to 100 due to the different symmetry of the gap. The competition of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order in rutheno-cuprates is also discussed.

Аннотация: A generalized method of conditional moments for computation of effective elastic constants of anisotropic rocks with spatially oriented microcracks is considered. The method involves an additional operation of averaging of known solution data for a modeled rock of orthorhombic structure with ellipsoidal microcracks whose semiaxes are oriented along the coordinate axes. The averaging is performed using the distribution function of rock microcrack orientations, which is expanded into a series in terms of generalized spherical functions. The expansion coefficients are determined by an experiment. In calculating the effective elastic constants of anisotropic rocks, there are no constraints on the concentration of microcracks. We have studied the parameters of azimuthal anisotropy of elastic-wave velocities in modeled amphibolites with ellipsoidal hornblende grains oriented along the coordinate axes and with three-planar and spatially oriented systems of microcracks. The obtained results agree with experimental data of ultrasonic determinations of elastic constants for amphibolite samples.

Аннотация: Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra excited at the fluorine K resonances of SF6 have been recorded. While a small but significant propensity for electronically parity-allowed transitions is found, the observation of parity-forbidden electronic transitions is attributed to vibronic coupling that breaks the global inversion symmetry of the electronic wavefunction and localizes the core hole. The dependence of the scattering cross section on the polarization of the incident radiation and the scattering angle is interpreted in terms of local π/σ symmetry around the S–F bond. This symmetry selectivity prevails during the dissociation that occurs during the scattering process.

Аннотация: The effect of the Coulomb repulsion of holes on the Cooper instability in an ensemble of spin–polaron quasiparticles has been analyzed, taking into account the peculiarities of the crystallographic structure of the CuO2 plane, which are associated with the presence of two oxygen ions and one copper ion in the unit cell, as well as the strong spin–fermion coupling. The investigation of the possibility of implementation of superconducting phases with d-wave and s-wave of the order parameter symmetry has shown that in the entire doping region only the d-wave pairing satisfies the self-consistency equations, while there is no solution for the s-wave pairing. This result completely corresponds to the experimental data on cuprate HTSC. It has been demonstrated analytically that the intersite Coulomb interaction does not affect the superconducting d-wave pairing, because its Fourier transform Vq does not appear in the kernel of the corresponding integral equation.

Аннотация: We study the decay of bosonic many-body states in the triple-well Bose-Hubbard model where bosons in the central well can escape into a reservoir. For vanishing interparticle interaction this system supports a nondecaying many-body state which is the antisymmetric Bose-Einstein condensate with particles occupying only the edge wells. In the classical approach this quantum state corresponds to a symmetry-protected nondecaying state which is stable even at finite interaction below a certain intensity threshold. Here we demonstrate that despite the fact that the classical counterpart is stable the antisymmetric Bose-Einstein condensate is always metastable at finite interatomic interactions due to quantum fluctuations.

Аннотация: We investigated the low-frequency dielectric properties of a Pb3Mn7O15 single crystal with manganese ions in the mixed-valence state (Mn3+/Mn4+). Dielectric relaxation was found in the frequency window from 20 to 100 kHz in the temperature range 110-180 K. The dielectric spectra of the crystal were analyzed using a Debye model. Estimations made within the model and analysis of resistivity data suggest that the relaxation behavior of the dielectric constant is related to polaronic charge carrier hopping. Around 250 K, charge ordering occurs in the crystal when the Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions are arranged in a specific order among the crystal sites. With a decrease in temperature, an ac electric field can induce a charge hop between the equivalent lattice sites available, related to crystal symmetry. This hopping is equivalent to the reorientation of an electric dipole that yields Debye-type behavior of the complex dielectric constant. The observed anisotropy in the behavior of the dielectric properties and resistivity can be attributed to a pronounced two-dimensional character of the crystal structure.

Аннотация: The properties of the normal and superconducting phases of p- and n-type cuprates are investigated in the appropriate low-energy models in the approximation beyond Hubbard I considering spin fluctuations. Calculated chemical potential dependence on doping, Fermi surface and T,(x) phase diagram for n-type cuprates are in remarkably good agreement with the experimental ones. Comparison of the singlet-triplet t-J model with simple t-J model shows that the spin-exciton mechanism originated from singlet-triplet hybridization leads to small contribution to the T-c(x) - optimal doping value becomes slightly lower and the maximum value of T-c become slightly higher.

Аннотация: An effective low-energy Hamiltonian is derived from a microscopic multiband p-d model in the regime of strong electron correlations. The parameters of the p-d model are determined by comparison with the ARPES data for undoped Nd2CuO4. The Hamiltonian is the t-J* model in which hopping and exchange slowly decay with distance and are taken into account up to the fifth coordination sphere. The quasiparticle band structure is calculated as a function of the doping concentration with regard to short-range magnetic order, and the superconductivity theory with the spin-fluctuation pairing mechanism is constructed. Assuming that the parameters of the model do not depend on the doping level, we obtained quantitative agreement with the properties observed experimentally for the normal and superconducting phases without introducing fitting parameters. Аннотация: In the framework of the effective low-energy model for high-T-c, cuprates with account for three-center interaction terms and spin fluctuations the properties of normal and superconducting phases of n-type cuprates are investigated. Microscopic model parameters were obtained from ARPES data in undoped compounds. Аннотация: The electronic structure of electron-doped cuprates is discussed in the regions of small and optimal doping. For optimal doping we obtain the parameters from a simple tight-binding analysis by fitting ARPES data, and for small doping we study the band structure by the generalized tight-binding method that takes strong electronic correlations into account explicitly. This method has also reproduced well the ARPES data for small doping. The effective low-energy Hamiltonian is the t-t'-J model with hopping parameters t and t'. We compare both methods and find very good agreement for the value of t while t' is different because it is caused by the different contribution of the short-range spin correlations. Аннотация: Using an invariant-polarization ultrasound method, we have studied the velocities of elastic waves in the gneisses and amphibolites of the second rock mass of the Archean complex of the Kola superdeep borehole (7622-9456 m) and calculated the determinate components of acoustic tensor and elastic-constant tensor and their symmetry. The symmetry of the studied structures is shown to be rhombic and triclinic. The stereoprojections of mineral's crystallographic orientation and normals to microfractures are built by the data on the inversion of the azimuthal dependence of elastic constants.

Аннотация: We consider two electric RLC resonance networks that are equivalent to quantum billiards. In a network of inductors grounded by capacitors, the eigenvalues of the quantum billiard correspond to the squared resonant frequencies. In a network of capacitors grounded by inductors, the eigenvalues of the billiard are given by the inverse of the squared resonant frequencies. In both cases, the local voltages play the role of the wave function of the quantum billiard. However, unlike for quantum billiards, there is a heat power because of the resistance of the inductors. In the equivalent chaotic billiards, we derive a distribution of the heat power which describes well the numerical statistics.

Аннотация: Light scattering and transmission by a monolayer polymer dispersed liquid crystal film containing liquid crystal droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring of liquid crystal molecules at the polymer-droplet interface is considered theoretically and experimentally. The developed optical model is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations of the theory of scattering of waves. It is applied to describe the interference quenching effect for the coherently transmitted light and electrically controllable symmetry breaking effect in small-angle structure of light scattered by film containing droplets with inhomogeneous anchoring. The analysis of transmittance and reflectance of the one-dimensional photonic crystals composed of monolayers is carried out. The formation of the photonic band gaps is analyzed.

Аннотация: Ceramic samples which exhibit a superconductivity with T(c) = 117 K have been synthesized in the Tl-Pb-Sr-Ca-Ba-Cu-O-F system. According to x-ray diffraction, the symmetry of the samples is cubic, with a lattice constant a = 6.04 angstrom. At room temperature the conductivity is of the n type.
