Аннотация: We describe a limiting case when nonlinear dynamics of an ac-driven semiconductor superlattice in the miniband transport regime is governed by a periodically forced and damped pendulum equations. We find analytically the conditions for a transition to chaos. With increasing temperature the chaos disappears. We also discuss fractional do voltage states in a superlattice originating from phase-locked states of the pendulum. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: We study classical and quantum scattering properties of particles in the ballistic regime in two-dimensional chaotic billiards that are models of electron- or micro-waveguides. To this end we construct the purely classical counterparts of the scattering probability (SP) matrix \S(n,m)\(2) and Husimi distributions specializing to the case of mixed chaotic motion (incomplete horseshoe). Comparison between classical and quantum quantities allows us to discover the purely classical dynamical origin of certain general as well as particular features that appear in the quantum description of the system. On the other hand, at certain values of energy the tunneling of the wave function into classically forbidden regions produces striking differences between the classical and quantum quantities. A potential application of this phenomenon in the field of microlasers is discussed briefly. We also see the manifestation of whispering gallery orbits as a self-similar structure in the transmission part of the classical SP matrix.

Аннотация: We calculate the quasistatic electromagnetic density of states for aggregates of touching spheres, in particular, linear chains and computer-generated random fractal aggregates. Multipole moments with orders of up to L=64 are taken into account for random aggregates with the number of particles of up to N=100 and up to L=8000 for linear chains. Extensive comparisons with the dipole approximation and geometrical cluster renormalization method are performed. Extinction spectra are calculated for several metals and black carbon. Long wavelength electromagnetic properties of fractal aggregates are considered in details.

Аннотация: The atomic structure and elastic properties of Y-shaped silicon nanowires of "fork"- and "bough"-types were theoretically studied, and effective Young moduli were calculated using Tersoff interatomic potential. The oscillation of fork Y-type branched nanowires with various branch lengths and diameters was studied. In the final stages of the bending, the formation of new bonds between different parts of the wires was observed. It was found that the stiffness of the nanowires is comparable with the stiffness of Y-shaped carbon nanotubes.

Аннотация: Light transmission spectrum of a multilayer photonic crystal with a central liquid-crystal defect layer placed between crossed polarizers has been studied. Transmittance was varied due to the magnetically induced reorientation of the nematic director from homeotropic to planar alignment. Two notable effects were observed for this scheme: the spectral shift of defect modes corresponding to the extraordinary light wave and its superposition with the ordinary one. As a result, the optical cell allows controlling the intensity of interfering defect modes by applied magnetic field. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: The quantum confinement effect (QCE) of linear junctions of silicon icosahedral quantum dots (IQD) and pentagonal nanowires (PNW) was studied using DFT and semiempirical AM1 methods. The formation of complex IQD/PNW structures leads to the localization of the HOMO and LUMO on different parts of the system and to a pronounced blue shift of the band gap; the typical QCE with a monotonic decrease of the band gap upon the system size breaks down. A simple one-electron one-dimensional Schrodinger equation model is proposed for the description and explanation of the unconventional quantum confinement behavior of silicon IQD/PNW systems. On the basis of the theoretical models, the experimentally discovered deviations from the typical QCE for nanocrystalline silicon are explained.

Аннотация: The rough surface of nano-crystalline diamond spheres induces surface electronic states which appear as a broadened pre-peak over approx. 15 eV at the C K-edge energy threshold for carbon in the parallel electron energy loss spectrum (PEELS). This appears to be at least partially due to 1s-pi* transitions, although typically the latter occupy a range of only 4 eV for the sp(2) edge of highly-oriented pyrollytic graphite (HOPG). No pi* electrons appear in the conduction band inside the diamond particles, where all electrons are sp(3) hybridized. PEELS data were also obtained from a chemical vapour deposited diamond film (CVDF) and gem-quality diamond for comparison with the spectra of nano-diamonds. The density of sp(2) and sp(3) states on the surface of diamond nano-crystals is calculated for simple structural models of the diamond balls, including some conjecture about surface structures. The results are used to interpret the sp(2)/sp(3) ratios measured from the PEELS spectra recorded as scans across the particles. Surface roughness at the atomic scale was also examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron nano-diffraction patterns were used to confirm the crystal structures.

Аннотация: This Letter studies the dynamics of transitions between the levels of a Wannier-Stark ladder induced by a resonant periodic driving. The analysis of the problem is done in terms of resonance quasienergy states, which take into account the metastable character of the Wannier-Stark states. It is shown that the periodic driving creates from a localized Wannier-Stark state an extended Bloch-like state with a spatial length varying in time as similar to t(1/2). Such a state can find applications in the field of atomic optics because it generates a coherent pulsed atomic beam. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Band structure -- DFT -- Superconductivity
Аннотация: The band structure, density of states, and the Fermi surface of a recently discovered superconductor, oxygen-deficient tungsten oxide WO2.9 that is equivalent to W20O58, is studied within the density functional theory (DFT) in the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Here we show that despite the extremely complicated structure containing 78 atoms in the unit cell, the low-energy band structure is quite feasible. Fermi level is crossed by no more than 10 bands per one spin projection (and even 9 bands per pseudospin projection when the spin-orbit coupling is considered) originating from the t2g 5d-orbitals of tungsten atoms forming zigzag chains. These bands become occupied because of the specific zigzag octahedra distortions. To demonstrate the role of distortions, we compare band structures of W20O58 with the real crystal structure and with the idealized one. We also propose a basis for a minimal low-energy tight-binding model for W20O58.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, specific-heat, and positive muon spin relaxation (?SR) measurements have been used to characterize the magnetic ground state of the spinel compound CuGa2O4. We observe a spin-glass transition of the S = 1/2 Cu2+ spins below Tf = 2.5 K characterized by a cusp in the susceptibility curve which is suppressed when a magnetic field is applied. We show that the magnetization of CuGa2O4 depends on the magnetic history of the sample. Well below Tf, the muon signal resembles the dynamical Kubo-Toyabe expression reflecting that the spin freezing process in CuGa2O4 results in a Gaussian distribution of the magnetic moments. By means of Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain the relevant exchange integrals between the Cu2+ spins in this compound.

Аннотация: Effects of the phase transition between the high-temperature tetragonal phases of the CsScF4 crystal were studied by Raman scattering. The appearance of new lines including a soft mode was observed below the phase transition point, in complete accordance with the new crystal symmetry. The behavior of the soft mode, which corresponds to in-phase rotations of ScF6 rigid groups around the z-axis (and out-of-phase within perovskite-like layers), resembles that observed earlier in RbAlF4, which suggests a similar mechanism of this transition in both crystals. We also discuss briefly d-wave pairing and high-T c superconductivity with T c ∼ 100 K which arises in the extended Hubbard model and in the generalized t-J model close to half-filling.

Аннотация: We investigated the low-frequency dielectric properties of a Pb3Mn7O15 single crystal with manganese ions in the mixed-valence state (Mn3+/Mn4+). Dielectric relaxation was found in the frequency window from 20 to 100 kHz in the temperature range 110-180 K. The dielectric spectra of the crystal were analyzed using a Debye model. Estimations made within the model and analysis of resistivity data suggest that the relaxation behavior of the dielectric constant is related to polaronic charge carrier hopping. Around 250 K, charge ordering occurs in the crystal when the Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions are arranged in a specific order among the crystal sites. With a decrease in temperature, an ac electric field can induce a charge hop between the equivalent lattice sites available, related to crystal symmetry. This hopping is equivalent to the reorientation of an electric dipole that yields Debye-type behavior of the complex dielectric constant. The observed anisotropy in the behavior of the dielectric properties and resistivity can be attributed to a pronounced two-dimensional character of the crystal structure.
