Аннотация: A microwave detector based on a self-sustained oscillator circuit is proposed as a means to investigate the real and imaginary components of the dielectric permittivity of liquid crystals in external electric and magnetic fields. Results are given for measurements of a 500 MHz oscillator frequency for two types of nematic crystals, 5CBP and MBBA. Fundamental regularities are identified in the behavior of the microwave dielectric permittivity of samples in electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that the minimum of the high-frequency dielectric loss in liquid crystals correspond to a situation in which the long axes of the molecules are oriented parallel to the direction of the microwave electric field. Аннотация: The structure consisting of alternating uniaxial dielectric layers is known to produce reflection of the same polarization as the incident field; e.g., the right-hand elliptically polarized light preserves this right-handedness and ellipticity of polarization at reflection. The parameters permitting the properly-polarized reflectance to exceed 99% in a wide frequency range were considered both analytically and numerically. The mirror with tuned top-layer thickness is shown to have several times less polarization losses than the uniform mirror. The hybrid mirror with metallic bottom layer has a considerably reduced thickness.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components T-ij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: In search of a substance able to function as an anionic surfactant applied for the electrically-induced anchoring transitions in liquid crystals, the compound 4-heptyloxybenzoate benzyl dodecyldimethylammonium (HOBBDDA) has been synthesized. Its orienting influence on nematic liquid crystal 4-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) has been tested. HOBBDDA dissolved up to 1.4%in 50 droplets dispersed in polymer film does not change the tangential surface anchoring inherent to polyvinyl alcohol matrix used. Homeotropic surface anchoring is realized if the HOBBDDA content exceeds 1.7%. The molecules of the surfactant in 5CB dissociate into anions and cations. The anions modify the surface anchoring under the action of DC electric field both in the normal and inverse mode. The mixture of HOBBDDA and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide can function as a binary ionic cationic surfactant which significantly expands the prospects for using the ionic-surfactant method to control liquid crystal materials. Аннотация: The structural and magnetic properties of a niobium nitride (NbN) film prepared by reactive sputtering onto a quartz substrate are investigated. It is shown using scanning electron microscopy that the film has a columnar structure with a diameter of crystallite columns of about 50 nm. The film magnetization loops are measured for the field orientation parallel and perpendicular to its surface. Based on the experimental data, the critical current densities of the film are estimated in both cases. For the field parallel to the film surface, the estimate is 6.5 × 104 A/cm2 at the liquid helium temperature. For the field perpendicular to the surface, the critical current density is close to the depairing current density (107 A/cm2). Analysis of the results based on different models of magnetic vortex pinning in superconductors shows that in the former case, pinning occurs at the boundaries of columns in the bulk of the sample, while in the latter case, it is determined by the influence of the surface barrier.

Аннотация: A chiral nematic is embedded between multilayer mirrors to obtain voltage-inducible polarized resonance spectra. Initially, the nematic director is uniformly oriented perpendicular to the mirrors’ surfaces because the chiral nematic helix is completely untwisted due to the homeotropic boundary conditions specified by the adsorbed cations. Then, a voltage is applied to remove the layer of surface-active cations from the input mirror. The obtained twisted homeoplanar configuration has a helix pitch exceeding the layer’s thickness. The twisting leads to the anomalous blue shift of the o-modes in the transmittance spectrum of the photonic structure. This blue shift can be effectively compensated by repulsion of spectral peaks as a result of mode coupling in the vicinity of the virtual avoided crossing point. The experimental results obtained are confirmed numerically using the 4 ˣ 4 transfer matrix method and explained with the contribution of a geometric phase.

Аннотация: The exchange mechanism of the ordering of electrons on e (g) orbitals has been estimated by the quantum Monte Carlo method with the nclusion of the hopping integrals through an anion in a one-dimensional system. A magnetic state in the form of a gapless quantum spin liquid has been found. The plateau existence region in the field-dependence of the magnetization, as well as the wave vector of the modulation of the magnetic structure with Q = pi/2 in the (magnetic field-exchange alternating) plane, is determined.

Аннотация: The ground state of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet having spins S = 1/2 and interacting with acoustic phonons is investigated in the nonadiabatic approximation using the quantum-mechanical Monte Carlo method. The critical parameters of the spin-phonon coupling, corresponding to the formation of bound spin-phonon excitations, crystal symmetry lowering, and the emergence of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, as well as the antiferromagnet-quantum spin liquid transition, are determined. The orthorhombicity parameter, the sublattice magnetization, the violation of the spherical symmetry of spin-spin correlation functions, and the magnetic moment in Gd2CuO4 and Eu2CuO4 are calculated. Аннотация: A quantum Monte Carlo study of the anisotropic antiferromagnet with four-spin interaction (K) and with spin S= 1/2 on a square lattice is reported. Temperature dependences of the capacity, susceptibility, spin correlation functions, and correlation length, and field dependences of magnetization are calculated. Phase diagrams of the ground-state antiferromagnet and gap (K0) and gapless (K0) quantum spin liquids are determined in the exchange-anisotropy-four-spin-coupling-constant (K), magnetic-field (H)-temperature (T), and temperature- (T)-K planes for an exchange anisotropy of 0.1 J. Аннотация: The two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg model with anisotropic exchange (Delta = 1 - J(x)/J(z)) and with negative next nearest neighbor exchange (J(2)) with S = 1/2 is investigated by using the quantum-mechanical Monte-Carlo method. The energy, magnetic moment at a site, heat capacity, and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated. The stability regions for Neel ordering of spins as well as the strip-phase and gapless quantum spin liquid are determined in the interval Delta/2 less than or equal to J(2)/ J(1)less than or equal to 1/(2 Delta). Аннотация: The spin density of states of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet in magnetic field having spins-1/2 and interacting with acoustic phonons is investigated in the nonadiabatic approximation using the quantum Monte Carlo method. It is found the gap energy A in the single particle spin excitations spectrum closes at magnetic field Delta similar or equal to H-c, W-ph W-s, where W-ph and W-s are the bandwidths of phonon and spin excitations in antiferromagnet. Аннотация: The Lorentz tensor components Lj and the polarizability tensor components ?j of 4-methoxyben-zylidene-4?-butylaniline (MBBA) liquid crystal molecules in nematic and isotropic phases have been determined experimentally. The quadratic dependences of the mean value ?(S) and anisotropy ??(S) of the polarizability in the nematic phase on the orientational order parameter S of molecules have been established. Within the phenomenological approach, the dependences ?(S) and ??(S) have been derived, and their features for MBBA and other known objects have been interpreted. The relation of the dependences ?(S) and ??(S) to the features of the nematic-isotropic liquid phase transition has been found. В© 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The orientational order parameter S of molecules in high-temperature discotic nematic liquid-crystal phases of triphenylene derivatives is investigated as a function of the length of side flexible molecular chains at different temperatures. It is established that the orientational order parameters S in the range of the transition from the nematic phase to the isotropic liquid phase (the N-D-I transition) are smaller than those predicted from the molecular-statistical theory and computer simulation. It is shown that the N-D-I transition is close to both the isolated Landau point and the tricritical point (regardless of the chemical structure of the molecules and the anisotropy of dispersion intermolecular interactions). Consistent explanations are offered for a number of experimental findings, such as the anomalously small changes in the enthalpy and entropy upon the N-D-I transition (as compared to those revealed upon the N-I transition in calamitic nematic liquid crystals), the anomalously strong response of the isotropic phase of discotic nematic liquid crystals to external fields (thermodynamically conjugate to the order parameter S) and the long relaxation times of this response, and the formation of cybotactic discotic molecular clusters in the isotropic phase in the vicinity of the N-D-I transition. Аннотация: The problem regarding the mass dimension D of mesogenic molecules as atomic clusters is formulated and solved using computer simulation and analytical calculations. For a large number of compounds belonging to different chemical classes, it is shown that the cores of discotic lacunar (rodlike, lathlike) molecules forming nematic or columnar discotic (calamitic) phases have a fractional dimension 1 D-c 2 (D-c approximate to 1). The dependences of the dimension D-c on the symmetry, the conformation, and the structural-chemical features of the molecular core are determined. It is demonstrated that, in the region of side flexible chains in molecules of both types, the dimension D-ch can be either smaller or larger than unity, depending on the chain conformation. An analytical expression accounting for the results of numerical experiments is obtained for the dimension D-ch. (C) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
