Аннотация: Collective lattice resonances in disordered 2D arrays of spherical Si nanoparticles (NPs) have been thoroughly studied within the framework of the coupled dipole approximation. Three types of defects have been analyzed: positional disorder, size disorder, and quasi-random disorder. We show that the positional disorder strongly suppresses either the electric dipole (ED) or the magnetic dipole (MD) coupling, depending on the axis along which the NPs are shifted. Contrarily, size disorder strongly affects only the MD response, while the ED resonance can be almost intact, depending on the lattice configuration. Finally, random removing of NPs from an ordered 2D lattice reveals a quite surprising result: hybridization of the ED and MD resonances with lattice modes remains observable even in the case of random removing of up to 84% of the NPs from the ordered array. The reported results could be important for rational design and utilization of metasurfaces, solar cells, and other alldielectric photonic devices. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: We consider light scattering by two-dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that in the case of a triple degeneracy of resonant leaky modes in the gamma point, the scattering spectra exhibit a complicated picture of Fano resonances with extremely narrow linewidth. The Fano features are explained through coupled-mode theory for a Dirac cone spectrum as a signature of optical bound states in the continuum (BIC). It is found that the standing wave in-gamma BIC induces a ring of off-gamma BICs due to different scaling laws for real and imaginary parts of the resonant eigenfrequencies in the Dirac cone spectrum. A quantitative theory of the spectra is proposed.

Аннотация: We consider nonlinear effects in scattering of light by a periodic structure supporting optical bound states in the continuum. In the spectral vicinity of the bound states the scattered electromagnetic field is resonantly enhanced triggering optical bistability. Using coupled mode approach we derive a nonlinear equation for the amplitude of the resonant mode associated with the bound state. We show that such an equation for the isolated resonance can be easily solved yielding bistable solutions which are in quantitative agreement with the full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. The coupled mode approach allowed us to cast the the problem into the form of a driven nonlinear oscillator and analyze the onset of bistability under variation of the incident wave. The results presented drastically simplify the analysis nonlinear Maxwell's equations and, thus, can be instrumental in engineering optical response via bound states in the continuum.

Аннотация: Nanogranular Co-SiO2, and Co-CaF2 films are investigated using ferromagnetic resonance and magnetic measurements. The spectrum of standing spin-wave has been registered in the perpendicular experiment configuration for all types of films with the magnetic granules content above 52 vol.%. The dependences of resonance fields Hr of spin modes on the mode number squared Hr(n2) are non-linear. Such behavior is supposed to be the result of the fluctuations of magnetic parameters (the magnetization and the ferromagnetic exchange coupling) in nanocomposite films. A comparison between the magnetic properties of Co-SiO2 granular films and Co-CaF2 films is carried out. The surface anisotropy value Ks of Co-SiO2 films is evaluated from the surface resonance modes of spin-wave resonance spectra as 3.5×10-4s7×10-4 J/m2. The magnetic anisotropy of Co100-x(SiO2)x, Co100-x(CaF2)x films (34s and the surface magnetic anisotropy of films Ks are determined. It is found that surface anisotropy of granules is predominant.

Аннотация: The existence of bound states in the continuum (BIC) manifests a general wave phenomenon first predicted in quantum mechanics by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner [J. von Neumann and E. Wigner, Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. Today it is being actively explored in photonics, radiophysics, acoustics, and hydrodynamics. We report an experimental observation of an electromagnetic bound state in the radiation continuum in a one-dimensional array of dielectric particles. By measurement of the transmission spectra of the ceramic disk chain at GHz frequencies, we demonstrate how a resonant state in the vicinity of the center of the Brillouin zone turns into a symmetry-protected BIC with increase in the number of the disks. We estimate a number of the disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain could be considered practically as infinite. The presented analysis is supplemented by measurements of the near fields of the symmetry-protected BIC. All measurements are in a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulation and analytical model based on a tight-binding approximation. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with bound states in the continuum that opens up horizons for the development of optical and radio-frequency metadevices.

Аннотация: Collective lattice resonances (CLRs) in finite-sized 2D arrays of dielectric nanospheres have been studied via the coupled dipole approximation. We show that even for sufficiently large arrays, up to 100×100 nanoparticles (NPs), electric or magnetic dipole CLRs may differ significantly from the ones calculated for infinite arrays with the same NP sizes and interparticle distances. The discrepancy is explained by the existence of a sufficiently strong cross-interaction between electric and magnetic dipoles induced at NPs in finite-sized lattices, which is ignored for infinite arrays. We support this claim numerically and propose an analytic model to estimate a spectral width of CLRs for finite-sized arrays. Given that most of the current theoretical and numerical researches on collective effects in arrays of dielectric NPs rely on modeling infinite structures, the reported findings may contribute to thoughtful and optimal design of inherently finite-sized photonic devices.

bound states in the continuum -- embedded trapped modes -- cylindrical resonator -- effective Hamiltonian
Аннотация: Bound states in the continuum (BICs) or embedded trapped modes are widely studied in different physical systems. The studies are restricted to a single open scattering channel. In the present paper we consider BICs embedded into several continua in a cylindrical resonator opened by two coaxially attached cylindrical waveguides with different radii. We demonstrate that engineering the BICs requires a degeneracy of three eigenmodeds of the closed resonator. That is achieved by variation of both the length and the radius of the resonator.

   FACTOR ENHANCEMENT

Аннотация: We study evolution of resonant modes by traversing over the distance between two parallel dielectric cylinders. The processes of mutual scattering of Mie resonant modes by cylinders result in an interaction between the cylinders which lifts a degeneracy of resonances of the isolated cylinders. There are two basic scenarios of evolution. For strong interaction of cylinders resonances bypass the Mie resonances with increase of the distance. That scenario is typical for low-lying resonances (monopole and dipole). For weak interaction of cylinders the resonances are bound around the Mie resonances of isolated cylinders that form the second scenario. Both scenarios demonstrate a significant enhancement of the Q factor compared to the case of an isolated cylinder.

Аннотация: Regular arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles have brought significant attention over the last decade due to their ability to support localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and exhibit diffractive grating behavior simultaneously. For a specific set of parameters (i.e., period, particle shape, size, and material), it is possible to generate super-narrow surface lattice resonances (SLRs) that are caused by interference of the LSP and the grating Rayleigh anomaly. In this letter, we propose plasmonic structures based on regular 2D arrays of TiN nanodisks to generate high-Q SLRs in an important telecommunication range, which is quite difficult to achieve with conventional plasmonic materials. The position of the SLR peak can be tailored within the whole telecommunication bandwidth (from ≈ 1.26 μm to ≈ 1.62 μm) by varying the lattice period, while the Q-factor is controlled by changing nanodisk sizes. We show that the Q-factor of SLRs can reach a value of 2 × 103, which is the highest reported Q-factor for SLRs at telecommunication wavelengths so far. Tunability of optical properties, refractory behavior, and low-cost fabrication of TiN nanoparticles paves the way for manufacturing cheap nanostructures with extremely stable and adjustable electromagnetic response at telecommunication wavelengths for a large number of applications.

Polarized bound state in the continuum and resonances with tunable Q-factor in an anisotropic photonic crystal / I. V. Timofeev, D. N. Maksimov, A. F. Аннотация: We consider a one-dimensional photonic crystal composed of alternating layers of isotropic and anisotropic dielectric materials. Such a system has different band structures for different polarizations of light. We demonstrate that if an anisotropic defect layer is inserted into the structure, the crystal can support an optical bound state in the continuum. By tilting the principle dielectric axes of the defect layer relative to those of the photonic crystal we observe a long-lived resonance in the transmission spectrum. We derive an analytical expression for the decay rate of the resonance that agrees well with the numerical data by the Berreman anisotropic transfer matrix approach. An experimental set-up with a liquid crystal defect layer is proposed to tune the Q-factor of the resonance through applying an external electric field. We speculate that the set-up provides a simple and robust platform for observing optical bound states in the continuum in the form of resonances with tunable Q-factor.

Аннотация: We report bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in a single infinitely long dielectric rod with periodically stepwise modulated permittivity alternating from ε1 to ε2. For ε2 = 1 in air the rod is equivalent to a stack of dielectric disks with permittivity ε1. Because of rotational and translational symmetries the BICs are classified by orbital angular momentum m and the Bloch wave vector beta directed along the rod. For m = 0 and β = 0 the symmetry protected BICs have definite polarization and occur in a wide range of the radius of the rod and the dielectric permittivities. More involved BICs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of the rod at a fixed dielectric constant. The existence of robust Bloch BICs with β ≠ 0, m = 0 is demonstrated. Asymptotic limits to a homogeneous rod and to very thin disks are also considered.

Аннотация: We consider wave transmission in a non-axisymmetric waveguide which consists of cylindrical resonator and two semi-infinite cylindrical waveguides whose axes are shifted relative to each other by azimuthal angle Δϕ. Although rotation by Δϕ does not change the eigenfrequency spectrum of the resonator, it effectively tunes the Fano resonances and respectively gives rise to an analog of a faucet opening and closing wave flux under rotation. Moreover, under the rotation of the waveguide and variation of the length of resonator, numerous events of the Fano resonance collapse occur to argue for the bound states in the continuum. In the nearest vicinity of the bound states scattering wave function with orbital angular momentum shows phase dislocations with giant vortical acoustic flows around.

Аннотация: We have shown significant suppression of resonant properties of metallic nanoparticles at the surface plasmon frequency during the phase transition “solid–liquid” in the basic materials of nanoplasmonics (Ag, Au). Using experimental values of the optical constants of liquid and solid metals, we have calculated nanoparticle plasmonic absorption spectra. The effect was demonstrated for single particles, dimers and trimers, as well as for the large multiparticle colloidal aggregates. Experimental verification was performed for single Au nanoparticles heated to the melting temperature and above up to full suppression of the surface plasmon resonance. It is emphasized that this effect may underlie the nonlinear optical response of composite materials containing plasmonic nanoparticles and their aggregates. © 2017, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

RESONANCES
Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in low-contrast dielectric gratings. It is demonstrated that the BICs originate from the reduced guided modes on the effective dielectric slab with the permittivity equal to the average permittivity of the dielectric grating. In the case of isolated resonances, the positions of BICs can be found from two-wave dispersion relationships for guided leaky modes. In the case of the degeneracy between the two families of leaky modes, the system exhibits an avoided crossing of resonances. In the spectral vicinity of the avoided crossing the transmittance as well as the emergence of BICs is described in the framework of the generic formalism by Volya and Zelevinsky [Phys. Rev. C 67, 054322 ( 2003)] with a single fitting parameter.

Аннотация: We consider acoustic wave transmission in a non-axisymmetric waveguide composed of a cylindrical resonator of radius R and length L and two cylindrical waveguides of radius rR. The center lines of the waveguides are shifted relative to the center line of the resonator by a distance r0 and relative to each other by an azimuthal angle Δϕ. Under variation of L and fixed Δϕ we find bound states in the continuum (trapped modes) due to full destructive interference of resonant modes leaking into waveguides. Rotation by the angle Δϕ brings complex phases into the coupling strengths of the resonator eigenmodes with propagating modes of the waveguides. As the result interference of neighboring resonances strongly depends on rotation of the waveguide introducing novel way for tuning Fano resonances. In turn rotation of the input waveguide strongly affect the acoustic transmission through the resonator imitating a faucet in wave transmission. Under variation of Δϕ and fixed L we find symmetry protected trapped modes. For Δϕ≠0 these trapped modes contribute to the scattering function supporting high vortical acoustic intensity spinning inside the resonator.

Аннотация: We show that a circular periodic array of silicon dielectric cylinders supports nearly bound states in the continuum (BICs) propagating along the cylinders. These propagating nearly BICs with extremely large-Q factors are surrounded by resonant modes weakly leaking into the radiation continuum. We present leaky zones in the form of dispersion curves for complex eigenfrequencies dependent on propagation constant kz, with the wave vector directed along the cylinders in the vicinity of different types of BICs. Symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to squared propagation constant Γ∼k2z; the widths of non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs behave as Γ∼(kz−kc)2, where kc and non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to k4z. The latter propagating nearly BICs can serve for the transmission of a electromagnetic signal paving a way to a different type of optical fiber. We also demonstrate weakly leaking resonant modes which carry orbital angular momentum.
