Аннотация: By use of coupled-mode theory we analyze a channel add-drop filter based on two dispersive waveguides symmetrically coupled with two resonant optical cavities. We show new solutions for the channel-drop filter processes compared to the solutions found by Manolatou et al (1999 IEEE J. Quantum Electron. 35 1322). For a special choice of the dispersion of the waveguides, we reveal a frequency region with sufficient total reflection.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a directional photonic crystal waveguide that holds a nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes within the light propagation band. For the defect positioned on the center line of the waveguide, there are two ways to break the mirror symmetry with respect to either light intensity or light phase. The latter results in a giant vortex of the Poynting vector of the power current within the defect exceeding the input current by, at least, two orders of magnitude. We also consider the breaking of symmetry relative to the mirror reflection with respect to the cross-sectional axis of the waveguide when light is injected equally into both ends of the waveguide. This leads to different light outputs determined by the vorticity of the optical vortex.

Аннотация: The numerical simulation of the behavior of the molecules of the DOBAMBC liquid crystal by the molecular dynamics method allowed us to find the change of the the conformation of molecules as a function of temperature and to reveal the helical structures with various pitches in the smectic phase C*. These results explained the anomalous temperature dependences of the order parameter at the molecular level, as well as the optical second harmonic generation in the region of smectic A.

Аннотация: We study numerically the discrete dispersion relations and waveguiding properties of relatively short linear chains of spherical and spheroidal silver nanoparticles. Simulations are based on the Drude model for the dielectric permittivity of metal and on the dipole approximation for the electromagnetic interaction of particles. We also simulate the dynamics of femtosecond optical pulse propagation along such chains. In the case that we consider (10 particles per chain), reflections from the chain terminals play a significant detrimental role. We show that dissipative traps can be used to reduce the effects of reflections. We also show that chains composed of oblate spheroids with sufficiently small aspect ratio (nanodisks) have better waveguiding properties when compared to chains made of particles with other spheroidal shapes. This includes a slower rate of decay, larger group velocity, and larger bandwidth.

Аннотация: We demonstrate bound states in the first TE and TM diffraction continua (BSC) in a linear periodic array of dielectric spheres in air above the light cone. We classify the BSCs according to the symmetry specified by the azimuthal number m, the Bloch wave vector β directed along the array, and polarization. The most simple symmetry-protected TE and TM polarized BSCs have m=0 and β=0 and occur in a wide range of the radii of the spheres and dielectric constants. More complicated BSCs with m≠0 and β=0 exist only for a selected radius of the spheres at a fixed dielectric constant. We also find robust Bloch BSCs with β≠0 and m=0. We present also the BSCs embedded into two and three diffraction continua. We show that the BSCs can be easily detected by the collapse of the Fano resonance for scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by the array.

Аннотация: We investigate the localized surface modes in a structure consisting of the cholesteric liquid crystal layer, a phase plate, and a metal layer. These modes are analogous to the optical Tamm states. The nonreciprocal transmission of polarized light propagating in the forward and backward directions is established. It is demonstrated that the transmission spectrum can be controlled by external fields acting on the cholesteric liquid crystal and by varying the plane of polarization of the incident light.

Аннотация: Optical Raman spectra of a ferroelectric sodium nitrite crystal have been detected in a wide spectrum range at various temperatures, including the region of the ferroelectric phase transition. A manifestation of a transverse soft polar mode of the A1(z) type responsible for the ferroelectric phase transition has been discovered in the spectrum at room temperature. This mode has been found to become overdamped even far from the ferroelectric phase transition temperature. This mode also appears as a central peak under heating. It has been found that the pseudoscalar mode of the A2 type has the highest intensity in the Raman spectrum of sodium nitrite. The frequency corresponding to the maximum intensity of this mode in the Raman spectrum varies from 130 cm–1 at 123 K to 106 cm–1 at T = 513 K. A fair agreement of the experimental data for the A1(z) mode with the Lyddane–Sachs–Teller relation has been established. The polariton curves for the A1(z) polar mode and the dispersion curves for axinons has been plotted. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: We have studied numerically the propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in linear periodic chains of plasmonic nanoparticles of different shapes. The chains are deposited on top of a thick dielectric substrate. While in many commonly considered cases the substrate tends to suppress the SPP propagation, we have found that this adverse effect is practically absent in the case when the nanoparticles have the shape of oblate spheroids with sufficiently small aspect ratio (e.g., nanodisks) whose axes of symmetry coincide with the axis of the chain. © 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.

Аннотация: Features of Raman gain of probe radiation in three-level atoms placed in a defect of a one-dimensional photonic crystal in the presence of laser radiation (pump) at an adjacent high-frequency transition have been theoretically investigated. It has been shown that there is a pump intensity range where narrow peaks (resonances) simultaneously appear in the transmission and reflection spectra of the probe field. Beyond this region, the peak in the transmission spectrum is transformed to a narrow dip. The spectral position of these peaks is determined by the Raman resonance and the transmittance and reflectance can be larger than unity at pump intensities from several microwatts per square centimeter to several tens of milliwatts per square centimeter. The nature of narrow peaks is due to a sharp dispersion of a nonlinear refractive index near the Raman resonance; this dispersion is responsible for a strong decrease in the group velocity of probe radiation. The proposed scheme makes it possible to obtain controlled ultranarrow resonances in the transmission and reflection spectra of the photonic crystal.

Аннотация: A new approach has been proposed for determining an equilibrium configuration of magnetic moments in condensed matter in terms of its discrete model. The solution to this problem is reduced to a system of linear inhomogeneous equations with undetermined Lagrange multipliers. The possibility of numerically solving these systems has been shown using a modified power method. The efficiency of the method has been demonstrated for the model of a thin magnetic film with a nonuniform distribution of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy over the area. The dependence of the coercive force on the uniaxial anisotropy of nanocrystallites, their exchange interaction, and other parameters of samples has been investigated.

Аннотация: An expression is obtained for the reflection coefficient of circularly polarized light normally incident on the film of a cholesteric liquid crystal with a variable helix pitch. It is shown that, in the case of a single defect (local change in the helix pitch), the spectrum of light reflection from a cholesteric acquires a dip corresponding to the defect mode. New qualitative features appear in the reflection spectrum of a cholesteric with two defects as the distance between them varies. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We study bound states of the two-dimensional Helmholtz equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open geometry given by two straight leads of the same width which cross at an angle theta. Such a four-terminal junction with a tunable theta can realized experimentally if a right-angle structure is filled by a ferrite. It is known that for theta=90degrees there is one proper bound state and one eigenvalue embedded in the continuum. We show that the number of eigenvalues becomes larger with increasing asymmetry and the bound-state energies are increasing as functions of theta in the interval (0,90degrees). Moreover, states which are sufficiently strongly bound exist in pairs with a small energy difference and opposite parities. Finally, we discuss how the bound states transform with increasing theta into quasibound states with a complex wave vector.

Аннотация: The energy gap appearing in the spin-wave spectrum as a result of Bragg scattering by the modulation period q = 2 pi/(d(1)+d(2)) Of a one-dimensional superlattice is observed by the method of spin-wave resonance in Co/Pd multilayer films. Аннотация: Two off-channel nonlinear defects coupled to the photonic waveguide constitute the Fabry-Perot interfer-ometer (FPR). The defects are made from a Kerr-like nonlinear material. For the linear case such a FPR can support the bound states in the form of standing waves between the defects if the distance between them is quantized. For the nonlinear case the bound states appear for arbitrary distance between the defects however for an quantized electromagnetic intensity. For the transmission through FPR we reveal new resonances and show these are a result of coupling of the bound states with incident wave because of nonlinearity of the defects. The resonances are spaced at the eigen frequencies of bound states.

Аннотация: The spectrum of light transmission through a structure consisting of a metallic layer and a cholesteric liquid crystal with an induced planar defect is calculated. The possibility of existence of localized states at the metal-dielectric interface of this system is demonstrated. The transmission spectra at different positions of the defect in the structure are studied.

Аннотация: The spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal bounded by an absorbing plasmonic gyroid layer are investigated. The gyroid material is a foam-like metallic three-dimensionally periodic curved film with zero mean curvature at every point. We calculate the transmittance and reflectance spectra at the normal and oblique light incidence. The possibility of the Tamm state formation at the interface between a photonic crystal and a plasmonic gyroid layer caused by the negative real part of the gyroid permittivity is demonstrated for the first time. Specific features of field localization at the Tamm state frequencies are discussed. It is shown that the spectral and polarization properties of the optical Tamm states are highly sensitive to the change in the angle of incidence and in the refractive index of a medium filling the gyroid cavities.

Аннотация: Based on the micromagnetic model which takes into account the random distribution of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy directions in crystallites of a nanocrystalline film, an effective method has been implemented for calculation of the magnetization dynamics in microwave fields. For a certain range of crystallite sizes, when the energy of the random magnetic anisotropy is comparable to the exchange energy, a significant change of the ferromagnetic resonance field, broadening of the resonance line, and the appearance of an asymmetry in the shape of the resonance curve were found. With an increase of the crystallite sizes, the resonance field first grows, then, it quickly decreases to its minimum, and then, it grows again to reach saturation. In this case, the steepness of the left slope of the broadening resonance curve first decreases faster than that of the right slope, leading to the symmetry breaking of the resonance curve shape, then, the curve becomes symmetrical again, and then, the steepness of the left slope becomes greater than that of the right slope.

Аннотация: Collective lattice resonances in disordered 2D arrays of spherical Si nanoparticles (NPs) have been thoroughly studied within the framework of the coupled dipole approximation. Three types of defects have been analyzed: positional disorder, size disorder, and quasi-random disorder. We show that the positional disorder strongly suppresses either the electric dipole (ED) or the magnetic dipole (MD) coupling, depending on the axis along which the NPs are shifted. Contrarily, size disorder strongly affects only the MD response, while the ED resonance can be almost intact, depending on the lattice configuration. Finally, random removing of NPs from an ordered 2D lattice reveals a quite surprising result: hybridization of the ED and MD resonances with lattice modes remains observable even in the case of random removing of up to 84% of the NPs from the ordered array. The reported results could be important for rational design and utilization of metasurfaces, solar cells, and other alldielectric photonic devices. (C) 2019 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: The theory of spin-wave resonance in gradient ferromagnetic films with magnetic parameters varying in space described by both concave and convex quadratic functions is developed. Gradient structures such as a potential well, a potential barrier, and a monotonic change in potential between the film surfaces for both quadratic functions are considered. The waveforms of oscillations mn(z), the laws of the dependence of discrete frequencies ωn, and relative susceptibilities χn/χ01 of spin-wave resonances on the resonance number n are studied. It is shown that the law ωn∝n for nnc, where nc is the resonance level near the upper edge of the gradient inhomogeneity, which is well known for a parabolic potential well, is also valid for the potential barrier and for the monotonic change in potential, if these structures are formed by a concave quadratic function. It is shown that the law ωn∝(n−1/2)1/2, which we numerically derived and approximated by the analytical formula, is valid for all three structures formed by a convex quadratic function. It is shown that the magnetic susceptibility χn of spin-wave resonances for nnc is much greater than the susceptibility of resonances in a uniform film. An experimental study of both laws ωn(n) and χn(n) would allow one to determine the type of quadratic function that formed the gradient structure and the form of this structure. The possibility of creating gradient films with different laws ωn(n) and the high magnitude of the high-frequency magnetic susceptibility χn(n) at nnc make these metamaterials promising for practical applications.
