Аннотация: The design of a multilayer bandpass filter has been investigated, in which each of the half-wavelength resonators consists of two dielectric layers with outer strip conductor gratings in the form of square grids and inner ones in the form of square patches. The grids serve as mirrors with specified reflective properties, which ensure optimal couplings of the outer resonators with free space and optimal coupling between the resonators. The patch gratings make it possible to tune the resonator eigenfrequency during the filter synthesis. The efficiency of the quasi-static calculation of the frequency response for the layered structure is shown for the case of a lattice period smaller than the wavelength in the dielectric and much smaller than the layer thickness. Since the calculation does not require much computing power, the parametric synthesis of the device can be performed on a conventional personal computer. The measured characteristics of the prototype of the synthesized third-order filter with a fractional passband width of ∼10% and a central passband frequency of ∼10.6 GHz are in good agreement with the calculation. The proposed design allows one to fabricate multilayer panels radio transparent in a certain frequency band for hiding microwave antennas.

Аннотация: A new design of a multilayer bandpass filter is proposed, in which each resonator consists of two identical dielectric layers with parallel strip conductor gratings on their outer surfaces and an orthogonal strip conductor grating between the layers. The filter designed on the basis of crossed gratings works simultaneously as a polarizer transparent in a specified frequency band if the electric field vector of a wave is parallel to the outer strip conductors but reflects waves with an orthogonal polarization. The data from a numerical electrodynamic analysis of a 3D model of the proposed device agree well with the results of the measurements performed on the fifth-order filter–polarizer prototype with a relative bandwidth of 14% and a central frequency of 13.4 GHz. The microwave power loss in the filter passband is ~1.2 dB under parallel polarization of the electromagnetic wave and more than 40 dB under orthogonal polarization.

Аннотация: A bandpass filter of new design comprising dielectric layers with surface metal grids is developed and studied. Dielectric layers act as half-wave resonators, while metal grids act as mirrors with preset reflectivity and ensure optimum coupling between adjacent resonators and between the boundary resonators and free space. A test prototype of the third-order filter with a central bandpass frequency of ~12 GHz and relative bandwidth ~17% showed good agreement of theory and experiment. The proposed design can be used in making panels radio-transparent within a preset bandwidth for covering microwave antennas.

Аннотация: Characteristics of a new miniaturized coaxial resonator are theoretically investigated. It is shown that the first resonant frequency of the resonator can be significantly lowered relative to the second one and the resonator dimensions can be considerably decreased as compared to those of a traditional dielectric filled quarter wavelength coaxial resonator. Based on the investigated resonator, a fourth order bandpass filter has been designed and fabricated. The filter stopband at a level of no worse than –90 dB extends to the frequency that exceeds the passband center frequency by a factor of 47. Calculated frequency responses are in good agreement with those measured on the fabricated filter prototypes.

Аннотация: A dual-mode microstrip resonator whose strip conductor is partially split from its one end by a longitudinal slot has been studied. The resonator has two fundamental modes, even and odd ones. The difference of their frequencies is controlled by varying the slot length. Based on such resonators, original structures of a diplexer and passband filters including dual-band have been designed. Measured performances of their fabricated prototypes prove applicability of designed devices in microwave engineering.

Аннотация: A miniature third-order microstrip diplexer comprising a traditional T-shaped dual-mode resonator at the input and one dual-mode resonator of original design, with regular strip conductors split from one end, at the output of each channel. The passband formation in each channel of the diplexer involves two resonances of the lowest modes of one split microstrip resonator and the resonance of one of the two modes of the T-shaped microstrip resonator. The proposed device is simple to manufacture and allows the central frequencies and bandwidths in each channel to be varied within broad limits. The good prospects of the proposed microstrip diplexer are confirmed by the high characteristics of its working prototype.

Аннотация: A microstrip dual-band bandpass filter (DBF) with an original miniature design is described. The filter consists of thee microstrip dual-mode resonators, which are rendered dual-mode by splitting their regular strip conductors from one end by longitudinal slots. The formation of one passband of the DBF involves the resonances of even modes of each microstrip double-mode resonator, while the other passband is formed by the resonances of odd modes. The proposed device is simple to manufacture and allows the central frequencies and widths of each passband to be tuned within broad limits. A method of DBF tuning has been developed. Good prospects of the proposed microstrip DBF are confirmed by the high characteristics of its working prototype.

Аннотация: Optical bandpass filters usually represent multi-layer dielectric structures in which the layers with high and low refractive indices alternate. In the case when the mirror layers have a thickness multiple to the quarter wavelength, their reflectance is the largest. In this case, they do not disturb the resonant frequencies of resonators, while the stopbands have an identical depth on both sides of the passband. The optical filters, the multilayer mirrors in which contain only the quarter wavelength layers and are fabricated from two materials, have a substantial disadvantage consisting of the high optical passband ripple. It is related to the impossibility of a smooth fine tuning of the reflectance of such mirrors both between resonators and on the input and output of the filter. The prototype filter contains resonators in the form of half wave-length dielectric layers with a low refractive index, each of which is separated from the next resonator or from free space on the input and output of the device by a multilayer dielectric mirror consisting of quarter wavelength layers.

Аннотация: An electrodynamic analysis of an optical resonator comprising a half-wavelength dielectric layer that is covered from both sides by quarter-wavelength layers with higher and lower refractive indices (RIs) is carried out.For such a resonator, the dependences of the external quality factor on number and RIs of the layers are obtained first. That allows one to determine minimum number of the layers in the structure to achieve the required quality factor at practically any contrast of the RIs. The results of this study provide an easy way to optimize the structures of 1D photonic crystal devices, particularly high-selectivity bandpass filters.

Аннотация: We derive the design formulas for novel multilayer bandpass filters in which every dielectric layer (resonator) is separated from the adjacent layer or external medium by a grating of strip conductors. Every grating acts as a semireflecting mirror. Such novel filters have wide stop bands compared to conventional filters with multilayer dielectric mirrors between resonators at the same passband width. The parameters of the lowpass, lumped-element prototype filter, as well as the theory of resonator-coupling coefficients, are considered in our approach. The computed frequency response of the fifth-order Chebyshev filter that was synthesized using the proposed formulas is also presented.

Аннотация: An easy method for designing filters with equalized passband ripples of a given magnitude is proposed. The filter, which is made of two dielectric materials, comprises coupled half-wavelength resonators and multilayer mirrors. The filter design begins with the synthesis of the multimaterial filter prototype whose mirrors consist of quarter-wavelength layers. Optimal refractive indices of the layers in the prototype are obtained by a special optimization based on universal rules. The thicknesses of the mirrors' layers in the final filter are computed using derived formulas. A design procedure example for silicon-air bandpass filters with a fractional bandwidth of 1% is described. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: The frequency dependence of the effective complex permittivity and effective complex permeability of a heterostructure based on a dielectric medium containing metallic nanoparticles of spherical shape is calculated by an original method. In contrast to the Bruggeman [21] and the Maxwell Garnett [17] approaches, which use the quasi-static approximation in calculations, a nonuniform distribution of electromagnetic fields inside metallic particles is calculated, which allows the analysis of the electromagnetic parameters of the heterostructure not only as a function of frequency but also as a function of the nanoparticle size. It is shown that the plasmon resonant frequency decreases with increasing both the size and the concentration of particles in the heterostructure. It is also shown that a dielectric medium containing nonmagnetic metallic nanoparticles exhibits diamagnetic properties. In this case, the position of the maximum on the frequency dependence of the imaginary part of the magnetic susceptibility coincides with the relaxation frequency of charge carriers. The calculated spectra of the real and imaginary components of the permittivity of the heterostructure with a size of metallic particles less than 10 nm are in good agreement with Bruggeman calculations; however, the agreement with Maxwell Garnett calculations is observed only at nanoparticle concentrations lower than 10–6.

Аннотация: A method for solving physical problems is suggested in which the general solution of a differential equation in partial derivatives is written in the form of decomposition in spherical harmonics with indefinite coefficients. Values of these coefficients are determined from a comparison of the decomposition with a solution obtained for any simplest particular case of the examined problem. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated on an example of calculation of electromagnetic fields generated by a current-carrying circular wire. The formulas obtained can be used to analyze paths in the near-field magnetic (magnetically inductive) communication systems working in moderately conductive media, for example, in sea water.

Here, every grating acts as a mirror with specified transparency. Relative to the conventional multilayer bandpass filter with multilayer dielectric mirrors, the proposed filter has multiply extended stop bands below and above the passband. Additionally, we provide formulas for computing the filter's frequency response. Аннотация: We propose a multilayer bandpass filter in which every resonator consists of two identical dielectric layers separated by a grating of parallel strip conductors. The resonators themselves are separated from each other and from the ambient space by gratings of strip conductors with an axis orthogonal to the axis of the gratings inside the resonators. The proposed filter construction acts at the same time as a polarizer. The device frequency response computed with use of the provided simple formulas is in a good qualitative agreement with numerical electromagnetic analysis of its 3D model.

Аннотация: One-dimensional photonic crystals (PC) are periodic multilayer structures consisting of dielectric layers with different refractive indices and thicknesses comparable with electromagnetic wavelengths in a certain frequency range. The synthesized filter contains three half wave-length resonators and four mirrors with quarter wave-length layers. The interior mirrors consist of three layers each, and the exterior ones, of one layer. Thus, the filter comprises 11 layers. In addition, it was demonstrated that, at the pass band frequencies, the half wavelength resonator layers accumulate the energies exceeding by far those of the quarter wavelength mirror layers. Therefore, the Q factor of the mirror material affects the loss in the filter passband much more weakly than the Q factor of the resonator material.

Аннотация: It has been shown that taking account of radiation from a material particle with negative relative permittivity εp that is in a dielectric medium with permittivity εm and experiences the action of an electromagnetic field prevents unlimited growth of particle’s electric dipole moment and its related electric fields if 2εm + εp → 0 and the medium and particle are lossless. Calculated radiation losses are embodied in a correction to the dielectric losses of a real particle. Using polystyrene with a silver nanoparticle showing negative permittivity in the optical range as an example, the behavior of the particle versus particle size has been studied for the permittivity varying in the interval –16 ˂ εp ˂ 16. It has been found that even if the permittivity of the nanoparticle is positive, taking the particle radiation into account considerably improves the accuracy of quasistatic calculation.

Аннотация: Electrodynamic analysis of plasma oscillations in a spherical metal nanoparticle is performed. It is shown that typical reduction in the frequency and quality factor of the resonances with increasing nanoparticle radius fades if the mode number grows. Depending on the particle radius, the resonant enhancement of the electric field might considerably either increase or decrease with increasing mode number. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
