Аннотация:
I review the four mechanisms of
bound
states in the continuum (BICs) in the application of microwave and acoustic cavities open to directional waveguides. The most simple are symmetry-protected BICs, which are localized inside the cavity because of the orthogonality of the eigenmodes to the propagating modes of waveguides. However, the most general and interesting is the Friedrich-Wintgen mechanism, when the BICs are the result of the fully destructive interference of outgoing resonant modes. The third type of BICs, Fabry-Perot BICs, occurs in a double resonator system when each resonator can serve as an ideal mirror. Finally, the accidental BICs can be realized in the open cavities with no symmetry like the open Sinai billiard in which the eigenmode of the resonator can become orthogonal to the continuum of the waveguide accidentally due to a smooth deformation of the eigenmode. We also review the one-dimensional systems in which the BICs occur owing to the fully destructive interference of two waves separated by spin or polarization or by paths in the Aharonov-Bohm rings. We make broad use of the method of effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian equivalent to the coupled mode theory, which detects BICs by finding zero-width resonances.

Bound
states in the continuum (BICs) have attracted considerable research attention due to their infinite quality factor (Q-factor) and extremely localized fields, which drastically enhances light–matter interactions and yields high potential in topological photonics and quantum optics. In this study, the room temperature directional lasing normal to a BIC metasurface is demonstrated with hybrid surface lattice resonances. Compared to the plasmonic nanolasers, the BIC metasurface lasers possess directional radiation and a larger emission volume. The high Q-factor resonance of BIC metasurface overcomes the limitation of a large mode volume in achieving low-threshold lasing. In addition, a design rule is proposed to prevent the occurrence of wavelength shift when the Q-factor changes; thus, the lasing thresholds for different BIC metasurfaces can be compared. In this work, the high localization ability of BICs is used to achieve the low lasing threshold (1.25 nJ) at the room temperature. The “light in–light out” diagram of the aforementioned laser based on simulations and experiments exhibits a large spontaneous emission coupling factor (β = 0.9) and the S-curve. The device developed in this study can be used in various applications, such as quantum emitters, optical sensing, nonlinear optics, and topological states engineering.

Being a general wave phenomenon,
bound
states in the continuum (BICs) appear in acoustic, hydrodynamic, and photonic systems of various dimensionalities. Here, we report the first experimental observation of an accidental electromagnetic BIC in a one-dimensional periodic chain of coaxial ceramic disks. We show that the accidental BIC manifests itself as a narrow peak in the transmission spectra of the chain placed between two loop antennas. We demonstrate a linear growth of the radiative quality factor of the BICs with the number of disks that is well described with the developed tight-binding model. We estimate the number of disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain can be considered as practically infinite. The presented analysis is supported by near-field measurements of the BIC profile. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with BICs opening up horizons for the development of radio-frequency and optical metadevices.

Аннотация:
We consider refractive index sensing with optical bounds states in the continuum (BICs) in dielectric gratings. Applying a perturbative approach we derived the differential sensitivity and the figure of merit of a sensor operating in the spectral vicinity of a BIC. Optimisation design approach for engineering an effective sensor is proposed. An analytic formula for the maximal sensitivity with an optical BIC is derived. The results are supplied with straightforward numerical simulations.

We investigate optical Tamm states supported by a dielectric grating placed on top of a distributed Bragg reflector. It is found that under certain conditions the Tamm state may become a
bound
state in the continuum. The
bound
state, in its turn, induces the effect of critical coupling with the reflectance amplitude reaching an exact zero. We demonstrate that the critical coupling point is located in the core of a vortex of the reflection amplitude gradient in the space of the wavelength and angle of incidence. The emergence of the vortex is explained by the coupled mode theory.

Quasibound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) is a long-lived state with a high quality factor (Q factor). Here quasi-BICs in nematic liquid crystal (LC) layer embedded between a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and a metal layer are studied. First, a special class of true BICs between the DBR and the metal film with field localization provided by the Brewster transverse electric (TE) reflection in the DBR is experimentally demonstrated. It is demonstrated that the Q factor of the quasi-BIC can be tuned by the LC optical axis rotation in a wide range being only restricted by metal losses. The change of coupling with the radiation channel leads to a critical coupling condition, providing a total absorption of incident light. The acquired quasi-BIC resonance is extremely sensitive to the temperature due to the narrow nematic temperature range of the LC. The quasi-BIC transforms to BIC at the LC-isotropic clearing point, due to closing of the radiation channel.

Dielectric resonators are open systems whose eigenmodes couple to the radiation continuum resulting in nonzero radiation losses. For a long time, it was believed that only guided modes with frequencies below the light line were decoupled from the radiation continuum [1] . In the early 2000’s, several counterexamples of perfectly localized states – i.e. totally decoupled from the radiation continuum – at frequencies above the light line were proposed in dielectric gratings and photonic crystal waveguides [2] . We discuss the properties of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases and the conditions for their realization in condensed matter, the criteria for the appearance of elementary Majorana-type excitations in solids, and the corresponding principles and experimental methods for identifying Majorana
bound
states (MBSs). Along with the well-known Kitaev chain and superconducting nanowire (SW) models with spin-orbit coupling in an external magnetic field, we discuss models of quasi-two-dimensional materials in which MBSs are realized in the presence of noncollinear spin ordering. For finite-length SWs, we demonstrate a cascade of quantum transitions occurring with a change in the magnetic field, accompanied by a change in the fermion parity of the ground state. The corresponding anomalous behavior of the magnetocaloric effect can be used as a tool for identifying MBSs. We devote considerable attention to the analysis of the transport characteristics of devices that contain topologically nontrivial materials. The results of studying the conductance of an Aharonov-Bohm ring whose arms are connected by an SW are discussed in detail. An important feature of this device is the appearance of Fano resonances in the dependence of conductance on the magnetic field when the SW is in a topologically nontrivial phase. We establish a relation between the characteristics of such resonances and the spatial structure of the lowest-energy SW state. The conditions for the occurrence of an MBS in the phase of the coexistence of chiral d+id superconductivity and 120-degree spin ordering are determined in the framework of the t-J-V model on a triangular lattice. We take electron-electron interactions into account in discussing the topological invariants of low-dimensional superconducting materials with noncollinear spin ordering. The formation of Majorana modes in regions with an odd value of a topological ℤ invariant is demonstrated. The spatial structure of these excitations in the Hubbard fermion ensemble is determined.

We consider
bound
states in the continuum (BICs) in a 1D multilayered system of an anisotropic defect layer embedded into an anisotropic photonic crystal. We analytically demonstrate that an anisotropic defect layer embedded into anisotropic photonic crystal supports accidental BICs. These BICs can be transformed to high-Q resonances by variation of one of the system's parameters. At the same time, the BICs are remarkably robust in the sense that a true BIC can be recovered by further tuning any of the system's other parameters, leading to tunability of the resonance position.

The sensitivity of a refractive index sensor based on an optical
bound
state in the continuum is considered. Applying Zel'dovich perturbation theory we derived an analytic expression for bulk sensitivity of an all-dielectric sensor utilizing symmetry protected in-Γ optical
bound
states in a dielectric grating. The upper sensitivity limit is obtained. A recipe is proposed for obtaining the upper sensitivity limit by optimizing the design of the grating. It is shown that the maximal sensitivity can be achieved regardless to the permittivity of the constituent dielectric of the system. The results are confirmed through direct numerical simulations.

Recently, there has been an increased interest in natural polysaccharides, in particular, chitosan, which are widely used in medicine and industry. Chitosan labeled with fluorescein dyes acquires additional optical properties that can be used in sensing and delivery systems. Mechanism of binding of a polymer to a label largely determines the field of its possible applications. The quantum chemical calculation using the B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ theory level has been made in order to contribute to the understanding of intermolecular interactions. The geometry of fluorescein, eosin Y, and erythrosin B in the dianionic, monoanionic, and neutral quinoid forms interacting with chitosan has been optimized and the absorption spectra have been calculated using the time-dependent density functional theory taking into account the solvent. The comparison of the calculated absorption spectra with the experimental data has shown a major role of the electrostatic mechanism in binding of anionic dyes to the protonated chitosan groups.

We consider light scattering by two-dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into a triangular and square lattices. We demonstrate the appearance of the double degenerate accidental super-BIC modes with extremely suppressed radiative losses in the vicinity of the Γ point of the leaky band of the triangular lattice. Two rings of BICs (circular lines of BICs in reciprocal space) with different polarization appear at the point of the super-BIC destruction. The radius of the ring BIC (RBIC) changes as a function of the sphere's radius. We propose a generic analytical expression to describe the behavior of the guided mode decay rate as a function of the sphere radii and the wave vector in the vicinity of the RBIC. The results are explained using a multipolar approach.

Аннотация:
We consider light scattering by dielectric gratings supporting optical
bound
states in the continuum. Due to the presence of instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity critical field enhancement in the spectral vicinity of the
bound
state triggers the effect of optical bistability. The onset of bistability is explained theoretically in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. As the central result we cast the problem in the form of a single field-driven nonlinear oscillator. The theoretical results are verified in comparison with numerical simulations.

Аннотация:
We consider nonlinear effects in scattering of light by a periodic structure supporting optical
bound
states in the continuum. In the spectral vicinity of the
bound
states the scattered electromagnetic field is resonantly enhanced triggering optical bistability. Using coupled mode approach we derive a nonlinear equation for the amplitude of the resonant mode associated with the
bound
state. We show that such an equation for the isolated resonance can be easily solved yielding bistable solutions which are in quantitative agreement with the full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. The coupled mode approach allowed us to cast the the problem into the form of a driven nonlinear oscillator and analyze the onset of bistability under variation of the incident wave. The results presented drastically simplify the analysis nonlinear Maxwell's equations and, thus, can be instrumental in engineering optical response via
bound
states in the continuum.

We observe experimentally symmetry protected
bound
states in the continuum (BICs) in the stack of ceramic disks. We analyze transformation of the resonant state into BIC with increasing of the number of disks theoretically and experimentally. In the experiment we measure the transmission spectra through the array of ceramic disks at GHz frequencies. We observe a quadratic growth of the Q-factor of quasi-BIC with the number of disks due to material losses. We cross-check the observation of BIC in the transmission spectra by measurement of the field profiles which are a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulations. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

For the nuclear spin system of a solid in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, we have found a rigorous
bound
for the heating rate of the system under the action of a high-frequency magnetic field, which is applied, for example, to create effective Hamiltonians. We consider the autocorrelation function (ACF) of a spin rotating in a local field whose fluctuations are specified by a Gaussian random process. The correlation function of a random field is taken as the sum of a static inhomogeneous contribution and a time-dependent contribution expressed self-consistently via the spin ACF. The ACF singularities on the imaginary time axis whose coordinates determine the exponents of exponential asymptotics in the high-frequency domain are investigated. The dependences of the coordinates on field inhomogeneity for various approximations have been derived. The wing of the ACF spectrum in the cumulant approximation is shown to serve as a rigorous upper
bound
for the wing of the ACF spectrum and, consequently, for the heating rate of the system when subjected to variable magnetic fields. We have established that randomly distributed inhomogeneous magnetic fields increase the wings of the ACF spectra and, thus, speed up the system's heating.

We trace the Q factor of the resonant modes which are limited to
bound
states in the continuum (BICs) for N=∞ in the finite array of N dielectric spheres and disks. For the symmetry-protected BICs we observe the quadratic dependence of the Q factor on N for high-refractive-index particles, while for low-refractive-index particles there is an interplay between the quadratic and cubic dependencies. The Q factor of accidental BICs grows cubically with N. We show that a plane wave can excite these quasi-BICs for tuning of the angle of incidence.
