chiral optical Tamm state -- polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror -- Q-factor -- coupled mode theory
Аннотация: This numerical study demonstrates the possibility of exciting a chiral optical Tamm state localized at the interface between a cholesteric liquid crystal and a polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror conjugated to a metasurface. The difference of the proposed structure from a fully dielectric one is that the metasurface makes it possible to decrease the number of layers of a polarization-preserving anisotropic mirror by a factor of more than two at the retained Q-factor of the localized state. It is shown that the proposed structure can be used in a vertically emitting laser.

RESONANCE
Аннотация: Inelastic neutron scattering spectra in the antiferromagnetic ferroborates Nd1−xTbxFe3(BO3)4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 1) reveal various magnetic excitations of the interacting iron and rare-earth subsystems. We observe an evolution of the magnetic system from “easy-plane”, in the Tb-free (x = 0) case, to “easy-axis” anisotropy for samples substituted with Tb. The spectra show hybridized Fe and Nd branches, which are determined by the Fe-Nd exchange splitting of the ground-state Nd3+ doublet. In the easy-plane configuration, near the Brillouin zone center, there are two different pairs of anticrossing quasiacoustic Fe and Nd modes in contrast to the easy-axis state, where the two corresponding pairs of the branches are degenerated. The high-energy (exchange) branches are similar in both spin configurations. The Ising-type anisotropy of the Tb ion prevents the magnetic moment from precession. The increasing of the Tb content changes the effective magnetic anisotropy and stabilizes the easy-axis state. The spin-wave dispersion in the substituted and pure TbFe3(BO3)4 compounds, which have the same, easy-axis magnetic structure, but different crystal symmetry, strongly differ. The observed spectra were analysed in the frame of linear spin-wave theory and the exchange parameters were determined.

ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles -- dynamic magnetization switching -- coercivity
Аннотация: The magnetic structure of the ε-Fe2O3 iron oxide polymorphic modification is collinear ferrimagnetic in the range from room temperature to ~150 K. As the temperature decreases, ε-Fe2O3 undergoes a magnetic transition accompanied by a significant decrease in the coercivity Hc and, in the low-temperature range, the compound has a complex incommensurate magnetic structure. We experimentally investigated the dynamic magnetization switching of the ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles with an average size of 8 nm in the temperature range of 80–300 K, which covers different types of the magnetic structure of this iron oxide. A bulk material consisting of xerogel SiO2 with the ε-Fe2O3 nanoparticles embedded in its pores was examined. The magnetic hysteresis loops under dynamic magnetization switching were measured using pulsed magnetic fields Hmax of up to 130 kOe by discharging a capacitor bank through a solenoid. The coercivity Нс upon the dynamic magnetization switching noticeably exceeds the Нс value under the quasi-static conditions. This is caused by the superparamagnetic relaxation of magnetic moments of particles upon the pulsed magnetization switching. In the range from room temperature to ~ 150 K, the external field variation rate dH/dt is the main parameter that determines the behavior of the coercivity under the dynamic magnetization switching. It is the behavior that is expected for a system of single-domain ferro- and ferrimagnetic particles. Under external conditions (at a temperature of 80 K) when the ε-Fe2O3 magnetic structure is incommensurate, the coercivity during the pulsed magnetization switching depends already on the parameter dH/dt and is determined, to a great extent, by the maximum applied field Hmax. Such a behavior atypical of systems of ferrimagnetic particles is caused already by the dynamic spin processes inside the ε-Fe2O3 particles during fast magnetization switching.

Аннотация: We consider light scattering by dielectric gratings supporting optical bound states in the continuum. Due to the presence of instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity critical field enhancement in the spectral vicinity of the bound state triggers the effect of optical bistability. The onset of bistability is explained theoretically in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. As the central result we cast the problem in the form of a single field-driven nonlinear oscillator. The theoretical results are verified in comparison with numerical simulations.

Аннотация: The simple lattice and magnetic structure, the high Neel temperature, the narrow antiferromagnetic resonance line of FeBO3, and the narrow electron paramagnetic resonance line of its isostructural diamagnetic analogs MBO3:Fe3+(M = Ga, In, Sc, Lu) make iron borate unique for investigations and applications. Iron borate is a model crystal for numerous experimental and theoretical studies, including spin crossovers and metallization at megabar pressures and many-electron effects in optics and X-ray spectroscopy. The recent works dealing with the investigation of the properties of FeBO(3)are reviewed.

Аннотация: Based on the proposed theory, we have investigated the shape of the NMR absorption spectra for 13C and 29Si nuclei in diamond and silicon crystals attributable to the internuclear dipole–dipole interaction. In accordance with the available experimental data, we have considered both crystals with a 100% content of magnetoactive isotopes and crystals with a comparatively low dilution by nonmagnetic nuclei. The time correlation functions (the first of which is the Fourier transform of the NMR spectrum) arising in an infinite chain of coupled differential equations are shown to be mutually similar with a slight time delay. The proposed theory allows the spectrum to be calculated analytically. The results obtained agree satisfactorily with the experimental ones. It is noted that the mutual similarity of the time correlation functions is probably a corollary of the development of dynamical chaos in the system.

Аннотация: We consider E-polarized bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in circular periodical arrays of N infinitely long dielectric rods. We find that each true BIC which occurs in an infinite linear array has its counterpart in the circular array as a near-BIC with extremely large quality factor. We argue analytically as well as numerically that the quality factor of the symmetry-protected near-BICs diverges as eλN, where λ is a material parameter dependent on the radius and the refraction index of the rods. By tuning of the radius of rods, we also find numerically non-symmetry-protected near-BICs. These near-BICs are localized with exponential accuracy outside the circular array, but fill the whole inner space of the array carrying orbital angular momentum.

Аннотация: We consider Bloch bound states in the radiation continuum in periodic arrays of dielectric spheres. It is demonstrated that the bound states are associated with phase singularities of the quasimode coupling strength. That makes the bound states topologically protected and, therefore, robust against any variation of parameters preserving the periodicity and rotational symmetry about the array axis. It is shown that under variation of parameters the bound states can only be destroyed by either annihilation of the topological charge or by migration to the sector of the parametric space where the second radiation channel is open.

Аннотация: The PbMnBO4 orthoborate single crystals were first grown and their magnetic properties and ferromagnetic resonance were studied. It was found that the ferromagnetic state below the Curie temperature TC=31 K is characterized by the strong magnetic anisotropy. The significant effective anisotropy fields of PbMnBO4 determine the energy gap in the FMR spectrum, which is extraordinary large for ferromagnets (112 GHz at T=4.2 K). It was shown that the static Jahn-Teller effect characteristic of the Mn3+ ion leads to both the ferromagnetic ordering and the strong magnetic anisotropy in the crystal. In the strong external magnetic field the induced ferromagnetic ordering is retained in the crystal above the Curie temperature up to the temperatures multiply higher than TC. A weak anomaly of the dielectric permittivity was observed in PbMnBO4 at the Curie temperature at which the long-range ferromagnetic order is established. © 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: An nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging approach for studying flocculant-induced asphaltene precipitation processes is introduced in this report. Unlike commonly accepted techniques, which primarily measure aggregation processes on the submicron scale (the level of asphaltene molecules and their aggregates), NMR imaging demonstrates the capability to obtain new useful information about bulk system behavior on the macro scale. To reveal the capabilities of the method, the model toluene-asphaltene system and two samples of natural crude oils with different chemical composition and physical properties (such as asphaltene content and density) were employed for experiments. The process of colloidal suspension formation and two different patterns of its evolution were observed depending on both the asphaltene content and the flocculant concentration. In the first pattern, the flocculant-induced precipitation leads to the slow uniform compacting of the suspension and descent of the sedimentation front, whereas the second pattern is characterized by sediment accumulation and the upwards drift of the front. It was found that the behavior of the precipitated asphaltenes in the model system correlates well with those observed in natural crude oils. The results achieved in this work are in agreement with the data obtained previously via other techniques. Thus, NMR imaging proved to be an efficient method for probing flocculant-induced precipitation in crude oils.

Аннотация: One of the most fascinating and counterintuitive recent effects in multiferroics is directional anisotropy, the asymmetry of light propagation with respect to the direction of propagation. In such case the absorption in a material can be different for opposite directions. Besides absorption, different velocities of light for different directions of propagation may be also expected, which is termed directional birefringence. In this work, we demonstrate large directional anisotropy in multiferroic samarium ferroborate. The effect is observed for linear polarization of light in the range of millimeter wavelengths, and it survives down to low frequencies. The dispersion and absorption close to the electromagnon resonance can be controlled by external magnetic field and are fully suppressed in one direction. By changing the geometry of the external field, samarium ferroborate shows giant optical activity, which makes this material a universal tool for optical control: with a magnetic field as an external parameter it allows switching between two functionalities: polarization rotation and directional anisotropy.

Аннотация: A comparative multitechnique study (including transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron radiation, static magnetisation, magnetic circular dichroism and electron magnetic resonance) has been carried out of nanoparticle-containing borate glasses of two different types: (i) with iron and manganese oxide additives and (ii) with iron and rare earth oxide additives. Due to the presence of magnetic nanoparticles, these glasses have a nonlinear magnetic field dependence of magnetization with hysteresis and saturation while remaining transparent in the visible and near-infrared spectral ranges. The nature of the nanoparticles has been identified as manganese ferrite for type (i) glasses and maghemite for type (ii) glasses. The synchrotron radiation studies as well as the computer-assisted electron magnetic resonance provide an insight into the morphological characteristics of the magnetic nanoparticles in the glass.

Аннотация: Metallic nickel nanoparticles of various sizes are formed in a thin near-surface layer in an amorphous SiO2 matrix during 40-keV Ni+ ion implantation at a dose of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The micro-structure of the irradiated layer and the crystal structure, morphology, and sizes of nickel particles formed at various irradiation doses are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The magnetooptical Faraday effect and the magnetic circular dichroism in an ensemble of nickel nanoparticles are studied in the optical range. The permittivity (epsilon) over cap tensor components are calculated for the implanted samples using an effective medium model with allowance for the results of magnetooptical measurements. The spectral dependences of the tensor (epsilon) over cap components are found to be strongly different from those of a continuous metallic nickel film. These differences are related to a disperse structure of the magnetic nickel phase and to a surface plasma resonance in the metal nanoparticles.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical nonlinear defects positioned symmetrically aside the waveguide. With the coupled mode theory, we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case and preserves the symmetry. In the second scenario, the symmetry is broken because of different light intensities at the defects. In the third scenario, the intensities at the defects are equal but phases of complex amplitudes are different. That results in a vortical power flow between the defects similar to the dc Josephson effect if the input power over the waveguide is applied and the defects are coupled. All of these phenomena agree well with computations based on an expansion of the electromagnetic field into optimally adapted photonic Wannier functions in a 2D photonic crystal.

Аннотация: Using coupled mode theory we consider transmission in a T-shaped waveguide coupled with two identical symmetrically positioned nonlinear micro-cavities with mirror symmetry. For input power injected into the central waveguide we show the existence of a symmetry breaking solution which is a result of mixing of the symmetrical input wave with an antisymmetric standing wave in the Fabry-Perot interferometer. With growth of the input power, a feature in the form of loops arises in the solution which originates from bistability in the transmission in the output left/right waveguide coupled with the first/second nonlinear cavity. The domains of stability of the solution are found. The breaking of mirror symmetry gives rise to nonsymmetrical left and right outputs. We demonstrate that this phenomenon can be explored for all-optical switching of light transmission from the left output waveguide to the right one by application of input pulses.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a T-shaped photonic waveguide coupled with two identical symmetrically positioned nonlinear microcavities. We present two types of symmetry breaking. The first one is a result of mixing of the symmetric input wave with antisymmetric bound states in the Fabry-Perot interferometer architecture. Similarly, the second mechanism of the symmetry breaking is the result of mixing the symmetrical input wave with the antibonding bound state in a straight waveguide coupled with two cavities positioned perpendicular to the waveguide. In both cases the mixing is due to nonlinearity. In turn, the symmetry-breaking solutions give rise to nonsymmetrical outputs in the T-shape waveguide. These effects are directly demonstrated by the electromagnetic field solutions which are complimented by coupled mode theory for the light transmission.

Аннотация: The contributions of the anisotropic exchange to the firstand second-order uniaxial anisotropy constants have been calculated for hematite at T = 0 K and arbitrary temperatures. The results of the calculations and the most significant mechanisms are taken into account in interpreting the temperature dependence of the anisotropy in rhombohedral antiferromagnetic crystals. The first-order anisotropy constant for hematite is described by the dipole interaction, contributions of the "single-ion" nature, and relatively small contributions of the anisotropic exchange. The second-order constant for hematite includes the "single-ion" contribution and the contribution of the anisotropic exchange. For FeBO(3) and MnCO(3) crystals, the main contributions to the first-order anisotropy constant come from the dipole and single-ion mechanisms.

Аннотация: It is shown that dispersions of E-1(LO) and A(1)(LO) modes of InN can be restored in a wide interval of wave vectors by studying impurity-induced first-order Raman scattering as a function of exciting light energy. It is also shown that due to the resonance character of scattering the observed phonon energies correspond to the wave vectors strictly defined by exciting photon energies. The frequencies of E-1(LO) and A(1)(LO) phonons at the Gamma point obtained by extrapolation to zero wave vectors were found to be 604 and 592 cm(-1), respectively.

Аннотация: We report a magnetic x-ray scattering study of the field-induced multiferroic GdFe3(BO3)(4). Resonant x-ray magnetic scattering at the Gd L-II,L-III edges indicates that the Gd moments order at T-N approximate to 37 K. The magnetic structure is incommensurate below T-N, with the incommensurability decreasing monotonically with decreasing temperature until a transition to a commensurate magnetic phase is observed at T approximate to 10 K. Both the Gd and Fe moments undergo a spin reorientation transition at T-SR approximate to 9 K such that the moments are oriented along the crystallographic c axis at low temperatures. With magnetic field applied along the a axis, our measurements suggest that the field-induced polarization phase has a commensurate magnetic structure with Gd moments rotated similar to 45 degrees toward the basal plane, which is similar to the magnetic structure of the Gd subsystem observed in zero field between 9 and 10 K, and the Fe subsystem has a ferromagnetic component in the basal plane.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, EPR and optical properties have been studied in a glass system {20La(2)O(3) - 22Al(2)O(3) - 23B(2)O(3) - 35(SiO2 + GeO2)} with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses; two magnetic transitions at 55 and 12 K have been detected and ascribed, respectively, to ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic clusters of Gd3+ ions. The EPR spectra confirm the clustering at higher Gd contents. At low temperatures the cluster-related resonance indicates an onset of magnetic anisotropy. The clustering, depending on the Gd concentration, correlates with a shift to lower energies of the strong optical absorption band edge.
