Аннотация: By using a simple model we consider single-channel transmission through a double quantum dot that consists of two single dots coupled by a wire of finite length L. Each of the two single dots is characterized by a few energy levels only, and the wire is assumed to have only one level whose energy depends on the length L. The transmission is described by using S matrix theory and the effective non-Hermitian Hamilton operator H-eff of the system. The decay widths of the eigenstates of H-eff depend strongly on energy. The model explains the origin of the transmission zeros of the double dot that is considered by us. Mostly, they are caused by (destructive) interferences between neighboring levels and are of first order. When, however, both single dots are identical and their transmission zeros are of first order, those of the double dot are of second order. First-order transmission zeros cause phase jumps of the transmission amplitude by pi, while there are no phase jumps related to second-order transmission zeros. In this latter case, a phase jump occurs due to the fact that the width of one of the states vanishes when crossing the energy of the transmission zero. The parameter dependence of the widths of the resonance states is determined by the spectral properties of the two single dots.

Аннотация: The negative magnetoresistance of thin In2O3 films, obtained by an autowave oxidation reaction, was detected within a temperature range of 4.2-80 K. The magnetoresistance was -1.35% at a temperature of 4.2 K and an external magnetic field of 1 T. A weak localization theory was used to explain the negative magnetoresistance and to determine the phase-coherence length in a temperature range of 4.2-80 K. The phase-coherence length was found to oscillate as the temperatures increased to around 30 K. From the maximum and minimum values of the oscillation of the phase-coherence length, it was suggested that the In2O3 film has two structure characteristic parameters. Transmission electron microscopy showed the structure of the thin In2O3 film to have structural features of a crystal phase- amorphous phase. It was found that the crystalline phase characteristic size was consistent with the maximum phase-coherence length and the amorphous phase characteristic size was consistent with the minimum phase-coherence length. It has been suggested that the temperature measurements of the magnetoresistance and the theory of weak localization can be used to evaluate the structural features of nanocomposite or nanostructured thin films. Аннотация: Although mining and mineral processing industry is a vast source of heavy metal pollutants, the formation and behavior of micrometer- and nanometer-sized particles and their aqueous colloids entered the environment from the technological media has received insufficient attention to date. Here, the yield and characteristics of ultrafine mineral entities produced by routine grinding of the Pb-Zn sulfide ore (Gorevskoe ore deposit, Russia) were studied using laser diffraction analysis (LDA), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement, microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, with most attention given to toxic lead species. It was revealed, in particular, that the fraction of particles less that 1 ?m in the ground ore typical reaches 0.4 vol. %. The aquatic particles in supernatants were micrometer size aggregates with increased content of zinc, sulfur, calcium as compared with the bulk ore concentrations. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal species decreased with time, with their zeta potentials remaining about -12 mV. The colloids produced from galena were composed of 20-50 nm PbS nanoparticles associated with lead sulfate and thiosulfate, while the surface oxidation products at precipitated galena were largely lead oxyhydroxides. The size and zeta potential of the lead-bearing colloids decreased with time down to about 100 nm and from -15 mV to -30 mV, respectively. And, conversely, lead sulfide nanoparticles were mobilized before the aggregates during redispersion of the precipitates in fresh portions of water. The potential environmental impact of the metal-bearing colloids, which is due to the large-scale production and relative stability, is discussed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Аннотация: The electrical properties of a system of nanogranular amorphous Fe–SiO films with a SiO concentration between 0 and 92 vol % have been investigated. The samples with a low SiO content are characterized by the metal-type conductivity. With an increase in the dielectric content x in the films, the concentration transition from the metal to tunneling conductivity occurs at x ≈ 0.6. At the same concentration, the ferromagnet–superparamagnet transition is observed, which was previously investigated by the magnetic method. The temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity ρ(T) for the compositions corresponding to the dielectric region obey the law ρ(T) ~ exp(2(C/kT)1/2), which is typical of the tunneling conductivity. The estimation of the metal grain sizes from the tunneling activation energy C has shown good agreement with the sizes obtained previously by analyzing the magnetic properties. In the dielectric region of the compositions, the giant magnetoresistive effect attaining 25% at low temperatures has been obtained.

Аннотация: Co-ZrO2 ferromagnetic nanocomposite thin films were successfully synthesized using a new thermite reaction between Zr and Co3O4 in layer geometry. The initial Zr/Co3O4 bilayers were obtained by the deposition of Zr layers onto Co3O4 films at room temperature. The process of mixing at the Zr/Co3O4 interface and synthesis of fine-crystalline Co and amorphous ZrO2 phases started at a temperature above the initiation temperature Tin ∼250 °C which did not depend on the bilayer thickness. For the bilayer thickness more than 300 nm high-temperature fcc-Co and cubic c-ZrO2 (or tetragonal t-ZrO2) phases were formed. For the bilayer thickness less than ∼50 nm stable low-temperature hexagonal hcp-Co and monoclinic m-ZrO2 phases were also present in the reaction product. A partial transformation from Co3O4 to CoO occurred after annealing at 300 °C. The secondary reaction between CoO and Zr started soon after Co3O4 had been converted to the CoO phase. After annealing at 500 °C more than 80% of Co was reduced and the final product contained Co nanoparticles above and below the superparamagnetic critical size embedded into a dielectric ZrO2 matrix. The synthesized Co-ZrO2 nanocomposite films possessed soft magnetic behavior, high magnetization and good chemical stability.

Аннотация: The magnetization of cation-substituted CoxMn(1-x)S sulfides upon cooling in zero magnetic field and in a field in the temperature range 4-300 K has been measured and the resistance versus magnetic field (up to 10 kOe) dependences have been obtained. Magnetoresistance and temperature hysteresis of magnetization versus prehistory are found at the magnetic field H < 0.1 T and at T < 240 K. The interrelation between the magnetic and elastic subsystems of the CoxMn1-xS solid solutions has been established. A jump in the coefficient of thermal expansion is observed at the Neel temperature. The features of the physical properties are explained by orbital ordering. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The temperature evolution of the current-voltage (I-U) characteristic of a contact of the break-junction type with direct conduction is investigated on a polycrystalline HTSC of the Y-Ba-Cu-O system. The experimental I-U characteristics possessing a hysteresis are correctly described in the framework of the Kummel-Nicolsky theory for an S-N-S contact (S stands for a superconductor; N, for a normal metal) in which the Andreev reflection of quasiparticles from the N-S interface is considered. It is shown that the shape of the I-U curve, as well as the existence of a hysteresis, is determined by the ratio of the number of "long" and "short" intergranular boundaries in the polycrystal under investigation. The coincidence of the calculated and experimental I-U curves made it possible to estimate the effective length of "natural" intergranular boundaries in polycrystalline HTSC materials. The estimate is obtained from the experimental temperature dependence of the critical current in the sample under investigation. (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: Variable-valence TmxMn1–xS (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.15) compounds have been synthesized and their structural, electrical, and thermoelectrical properties have been studied in the temperature range of 80–1100 K. The regions of existence of solid solutions of sulfides TmxMn1–xS with the NaCl-type fcc lattice have been determined. It has been found that, as thulium ions are substituted for manganese cations, the electrical resistivity increases, and the lattice parameter increases more sharply than that corresponding to the Vegard’s law. The study of the temperature dependences of the thermopower coefficient has revealed that the current carrier sign is retained to 500 K for all the substitution concentrations, and the charge carrier type changes from the hole type to the electron type with variations in the temperature. The experimental data have been explained in terms of the exciton model.

Аннотация: We study the effect of the structure on critical currents and current-voltage characteristics (CVC's) of foamed bismuth-based polycrystalline high-temperature superconductors (HTSC). The fractal cluster structure of superconducting foams has been observed and the fractal dimension of boundaries between superconducting and normal clusters has been determined. Based on the magnetic and transport properties of the foamed polycrystalline superconductors, we have shown that the initial parts of CVC's of the superconducting foams are described well by the model that accounts the magnetic flux trapping in fractal clusters of a normal phase. Аннотация: In the past, a maximum-entropy model was introduced and applied to the study of statistical scattering by chaotic cavities, when short paths may play an important role in the scattering process. In particular, the validity of the model was investigated in relation with the statistical properties of the conductance in open chaotic cavities. In this paper we investigate further the validity of the maximum-entropy model, by comparing the theoretical predictions with the results of computer simulations, in which the Schrodinger equation is solved numerically inside the cavity for one and two open channels in the leads; we analyze, in addition to the conductance, the zero-frequency limit of the shot-noise power spectrum. We also obtain theoretical results for the ensemble average of this last quantity, for the orthogonal and unitary cases of the circular ensemble and an arbitrary number of channels. Generally speaking, the agreement between theory and numerics is good. In some of the cavities that we study, short paths consist of whispering gallery modes, which were excluded in previous studies. These cavities turn out to be all the more interesting, as it is in relation with them that we found certain systematic discrepancies in the comparison with theory. We give evidence that it is the lack of stationarity inside the energy interval that is analyzed, and hence the lack of ergodicity-a property assumed in the maximum-entropy model-that gives rise to the discrepancies. Indeed, the agreement between theory and numerical simulations is improved when the energy interval is reduced to a point and the statistics is then collected over an ensemble obtained by varying the position of an obstacle inside the cavity. It thus appears that the maximum-entropy model is valid beyond the domain where it was originally derived. An understanding of this situation is still lacking at the present moment.

Аннотация: Energy spectra and transport properties of armchair nanotubes with curvature induced spin-orbit interaction are investigated thoroughly. The spin-orbit interaction consists of two terms: the first one preserves the spin symmetry in rotating frame, while the second one breaks it. It is found that the both terms are equally important: (i) at scattering on the potential step which mimics a long-range potential in the nanotubes; (ii) at transport via nanotube quantum dots. It is shown that an armchair nanotube with the first spin-orbit term works as an ideal spin-filter, while the second term produces a parasitic inductance.

Аннотация: We study spin-dependent electron transmission through one- and two-dimensional curved waveguides and quantum dots with account of spin-orbit interaction. We prove that for a transmission through an arbitrary structure there is no spin polarization provided the electron transmits in an isolated energy subband and only two leads are attached to the structure. In particular there is no spin polarization in the one-dimensional wire, for which a spin-dependent solution is found analytically. The solution demonstrates the spin evolution as dependent on a length of wire. The numerical solution for transmission of electrons through the two-dimensional curved waveguides coincides with the solution for the one-dimensional wire if the energy of electron is within the first energy subband. In the vicinity of edges of the energy subbands there are sharp anomalies of spin flipping.

Аннотация: We consider the trapping of electrons with a definite spin polarization by bound states in the continuum (BSC) in the open Aharonov-Bohm rings in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (RSOI). Neglecting the Zeeman term we show the existence of BSCs in the one-dimensional ring when the eigenstates of the closed ring are doubly degenerate. With account of the Zeeman term BSCs occur only at the points of threefold degeneracy. The BSCs are found in the parametric space of flux and RSOI strength in close pairs with opposite spin polarization. Thereby the spin polarization of electrons transmitted through the ring can be altered by minor variation of magnetic or electric field at the vicinity of these pairs. Numerical simulations of the two-dimensional open ring show similar results for the BSCs. Encircling the BSC points in the parametric space of the flux and the RSOI constant gives rise to a geometric phase.

Аннотация: For circular quantum dot (QD), taking into account the Razhba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), an exact energy spectrum is obtained. For a small SOI constant, the eigenfunctions of the QD are found. It is shown that the application of a radiation field with circular polarization removes the Kramers degeneracy of the QD eigenstates. Effective spin polarization of electrons transmitted through the QD owing to a radiation field with circular polarization is demonstrated. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The electrical injection of the spin-polarized current into silicon in the Fe3Si/n-Si epitaxial structure is demonstrated. The spin accumulation effect is examined by measuring the local and nonlocal voltage in a special four-terminal device. The observed effect of the electric bias on the spin signal is discussed and compared with the results obtained for ferromagnet/semiconductor structures.

Аннотация: We consider a system that consists of two single-quantum billiards (QBs) coupled by a waveguide and study the transmission through this system as a function of length and width of the waveguide. To interpret the numerical results for the transmission, we explore a simple model with a small number of states which allows us to consider the problem analytically. The transmission is described in the S-matrix formalism by using the non-Hermitian effective Hamilton operator for the open system. The coupling of the single QBs to the internal waveguide characterizes the 'internal' coupling strength u of the states of the system while that of the system as a whole to the attached leads determines the 'external' coupling strength v of the resonance states via the continuum (waves in the leads). The transmission is resonant for all values of v/u in relation to the effective Hamiltonian. It depends strongly on the ratio u/u via the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the effective Hamiltonian. The results obtained are compared qualitatively with those from simulation calculations for larger systems. Most interesting is the existence of resonance states with vanishing widths that may appear at all values of v/u. They cause zeros in the transmission through the double QB due to trapping of the particle in the waveguide.

Аннотация: To study spin-dependent transport phenomena in Fe3Si/p-Si structures we fabricated 3-terminal planar microdevices and metal/semiconductor diode using conventional photolithography and wet chemical etching. IaEuro'V curve of prepared diode demonstrates rectifying behavior, which indicates the presence of Schottky barrier in Fe3Si/p-Si interface. Calculated Schottky barrier height is 0.57 eV, which can provide necessary conditions for spin accumulation in p-Si. Indeed, in 3-terminal planar device with Fe3Si/p-Si Schottky contact Hanle effect was observed. By the analysis of Hanle curves spin lifetime spin diffusion length in p-Si were calculated, which are 145 ps and 405 nm, respectively (at T = 300 K). Spin lifetime strongly depends on temperature which can be related to the fact that spin-dependent transport in our device is realized via the surface states. This gives a perspective of creation of spintronic devices based on metal/semiconductor structure without need for forming tunnel or Schottky tunnel contact.

Аннотация: We consider Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a mesoscopic semiconductor ring threaded by both a constant magnetic flux and a time-dependent, resonant magnetic field with one or two frequencies. Working in the ballistic regime, we establish that the theory of ''quantum nonlinear resonance'' applies, and thus that this system represents a possible solid-state realization of ''quantum nonlinear resonance'' and ''quantum chaos.'' In particular, we investigate the behavior of the time-averaged electron energy at zero temperature in the regimes of (i) an isolated quantum nonlinear resonance and (ii) the transition to quantum chaos, when two quantum nonlinear resonances overlap. The time-averaged energy exhibits sharp resonant behavior as a function of the applied constant magnetic flux, and has a staircase dependence on the amplitude of the external time-dependent field. In the chaotic regime, the resonant behavior exhibits complex structure as a function of flux and frequency. We compare and contrast the quantum chaos expected in these mesoscopic ''solid-state atoms'' with that observed in Rydberg atoms in microwave fields, and discuss the prospects for experimental observation of the effects we predict.

Аннотация: The current-voltage characteristics of a porous superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O (x) (Bi2223) have been measured at temperatures in the range from 10 to 90 K in magnetic fields of 0-80 kOe. The experimental dependences have been analyzed within the model allowing for pinning by clusters of a normal phase with fractal boundaries, as well as the model taking into account phase transformations of vortex matter. It has been found that the electrical resistance of the superconductor material significantly increases at temperatures of 60-70 K over the entire range of magnetic fields under consideration without changing in the sign of the curvature of the dependence R(I). It has been assumed that this behavior is associated with the specific feature of the pinning in a highly porous high-temperature superconductor, which lies in the fractality of the distribution of pinning centers in a wide range of self-similarity scales. The studied material at the aforementioned temperatures is characterized by the melting of the vortex structure.

Аннотация: We consider the effective Hamiltonian of an open quantum system, its biorthogonal eigenfunctions phi(lambda), and define the value r(lambda)=(phi(lambda)parallel to phi(lambda))/ that characterizes the phase rigidity of the eigenfunctions phi(lambda). In the scenario with avoided level crossings, r(lambda) varies between 1 and 0 due to the mutual influence of neighboring resonances. The variation of r(lambda) is an internal property of an open quantum system. In the literature, the phase rigidity rho of the scattering wave function Psi(E)(C) is considered. Since Psi(E)(C) can be represented in the interior of the system by the phi(lambda), the phase rigidity rho of the Psi(E)(C) is related to the r(lambda) and therefore also to the mutual influence of neighboring resonances. As a consequence, the reduction of the phase rigidity rho to values smaller than 1 should be considered, at least partly, as an internal property of an open quantum system in the overlapping regime. The relation to measurable values such as the transmission through a quantum dot, follows from the fact that the transmission is, in any case, resonant at energies that are determined by the real part of the eigenvalues of the effective Hamiltonian. We illustrate the relation between phase rigidity rho and transmission numerically for small open cavities.
