Аннотация: The fractal dimension of the boundaries of clusters formed by pores and granules in polycrystalline materials is shown to be determined by the sample density and crystallite sizes. The dependence of the fractal dimension on the density has a maximum. It is shown that the maximum diamagnetic response can be obtained in a porous high-temperature superconductor with a porosity of 50-60% and small crystallite sizes.

Аннотация: H-1 magnetic resonance microtomography imaging was applied to study vascular systems in developing bean (Phaseolus limensis L.) seeds. Using the gradient echo method, we recorded 2D tomographic sections in the sagittal and axial planes of the fruits sampled from a vegetating plant on days 10, 17, 24, and 31 after fertilization. Any vascular connection between the tissues of maternal plant (bean pod and seed coat) and the embryo were undetectable. The embryo has an autonomous branched network of procambial strands in the cotyledons, converging to the embryonic axis. The bean pods are covered with a network of vascular bundles; large vascular strands run along the dorsal and ventral sutures. The seed coat vascular bundles are formed in the process of seed ripening and are represented by a developed vascular system multiply branching in the middle part of the ground parenchyma at the stage of physiological maturity. They are connected with the source of assimilates via the lateral pod veins and a large vascular bundle, entering the seed below the hilum via the placenta. Assimilates enter the external part of the seed coat, which contains no vascular bundles, via the funiculus vascular bundles and hilum tissue.

Аннотация: Energy spectra and transport properties of armchair nanotubes with curvature induced spin-orbit interaction are investigated thoroughly. The spin-orbit interaction consists of two terms: the first one preserves the spin symmetry in rotating frame, while the second one breaks it. It is found that the both terms are equally important: (i) at scattering on the potential step which mimics a long-range potential in the nanotubes; (ii) at transport via nanotube quantum dots. It is shown that an armchair nanotube with the first spin-orbit term works as an ideal spin-filter, while the second term produces a parasitic inductance.

Аннотация: The temperature evolution of the current-voltage (I-U) characteristic of a contact of the break-junction type with direct conduction is investigated on a polycrystalline HTSC of the Y-Ba-Cu-O system. The experimental I-U characteristics possessing a hysteresis are correctly described in the framework of the Kummel-Nicolsky theory for an S-N-S contact (S stands for a superconductor; N, for a normal metal) in which the Andreev reflection of quasiparticles from the N-S interface is considered. It is shown that the shape of the I-U curve, as well as the existence of a hysteresis, is determined by the ratio of the number of "long" and "short" intergranular boundaries in the polycrystal under investigation. The coincidence of the calculated and experimental I-U curves made it possible to estimate the effective length of "natural" intergranular boundaries in polycrystalline HTSC materials. The estimate is obtained from the experimental temperature dependence of the critical current in the sample under investigation. (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: An extended critical state model has been developed. The model has considered the equilibrium magnetization of a surface layer and the magnetization of the central region of a superconducting sample. The magnetic flux distributions in the sample have been calculated. An analytical dependence of the critical current density on the magnetic field with different behaviors in strong and weak fields has been proposed. A relation of the asymmetry of the magnetization loops and the critical current density to the sample size has been established. The model is applicable to the parameterization of magnetization loops of single-crystal and polycrystalline superconductors.

Аннотация: We consider quantum transmission through double-bend Pi- and Z-shaped waveguides controlled by the finger gate potential. Using the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach we explain the resonances in transmission. We show a difference in transmission in the short waveguides that is the result of different chirality in Z and Pi waveguides. We demonstrate that the potential selectively affects the resonant widths resulting in the occurrence of bound states in the continuum.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BSCs) or embedded trapped modes in two- and three-dimensional acoustic axisymmetric duct-cavity structures. We demonstrate numerically that, under variation of the length of the cavity, multiple BSCs occur due to the Friedrich-Wintgen two-mode full destructive interference mechanism. The BSCs are detected by tracing the resonant widths to the points of the collapse of Fano resonances where one of the two resonant modes acquires infinite life-time. It is shown that the approach of the acoustic coupled mode theory cast in the truncated form of a two-mode approximation allows us to analytically predict the BSC frequencies and shape functions to a good accuracy in both two and three dimensions. © 2015 Cambridge University Press.

Аннотация: Variable-valence TmxMn1–xS (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.15) compounds have been synthesized and their structural, electrical, and thermoelectrical properties have been studied in the temperature range of 80–1100 K. The regions of existence of solid solutions of sulfides TmxMn1–xS with the NaCl-type fcc lattice have been determined. It has been found that, as thulium ions are substituted for manganese cations, the electrical resistivity increases, and the lattice parameter increases more sharply than that corresponding to the Vegard’s law. The study of the temperature dependences of the thermopower coefficient has revealed that the current carrier sign is retained to 500 K for all the substitution concentrations, and the charge carrier type changes from the hole type to the electron type with variations in the temperature. The experimental data have been explained in terms of the exciton model.

Аннотация: Co-ZrO2 ferromagnetic nanocomposite thin films were successfully synthesized using a new thermite reaction between Zr and Co3O4 in layer geometry. The initial Zr/Co3O4 bilayers were obtained by the deposition of Zr layers onto Co3O4 films at room temperature. The process of mixing at the Zr/Co3O4 interface and synthesis of fine-crystalline Co and amorphous ZrO2 phases started at a temperature above the initiation temperature Tin ∼250 °C which did not depend on the bilayer thickness. For the bilayer thickness more than 300 nm high-temperature fcc-Co and cubic c-ZrO2 (or tetragonal t-ZrO2) phases were formed. For the bilayer thickness less than ∼50 nm stable low-temperature hexagonal hcp-Co and monoclinic m-ZrO2 phases were also present in the reaction product. A partial transformation from Co3O4 to CoO occurred after annealing at 300 °C. The secondary reaction between CoO and Zr started soon after Co3O4 had been converted to the CoO phase. After annealing at 500 °C more than 80% of Co was reduced and the final product contained Co nanoparticles above and below the superparamagnetic critical size embedded into a dielectric ZrO2 matrix. The synthesized Co-ZrO2 nanocomposite films possessed soft magnetic behavior, high magnetization and good chemical stability.

Аннотация: Although mining and mineral processing industry is a vast source of heavy metal pollutants, the formation and behavior of micrometer- and nanometer-sized particles and their aqueous colloids entered the environment from the technological media has received insufficient attention to date. Here, the yield and characteristics of ultrafine mineral entities produced by routine grinding of the Pb-Zn sulfide ore (Gorevskoe ore deposit, Russia) were studied using laser diffraction analysis (LDA), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential measurement, microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, with most attention given to toxic lead species. It was revealed, in particular, that the fraction of particles less that 1 ?m in the ground ore typical reaches 0.4 vol. %. The aquatic particles in supernatants were micrometer size aggregates with increased content of zinc, sulfur, calcium as compared with the bulk ore concentrations. The hydrodynamic diameter of the colloidal species decreased with time, with their zeta potentials remaining about -12 mV. The colloids produced from galena were composed of 20-50 nm PbS nanoparticles associated with lead sulfate and thiosulfate, while the surface oxidation products at precipitated galena were largely lead oxyhydroxides. The size and zeta potential of the lead-bearing colloids decreased with time down to about 100 nm and from -15 mV to -30 mV, respectively. And, conversely, lead sulfide nanoparticles were mobilized before the aggregates during redispersion of the precipitates in fresh portions of water. The potential environmental impact of the metal-bearing colloids, which is due to the large-scale production and relative stability, is discussed. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

The water uptake in PCM reinforced by aramid and carbon fibers was measured by NMR spectroscopy techniques. The aramid fiber-reinforced PCM absorbs water more intensively compared with PCM reinforced by carbon fiber, but both of them are retaining water inside of pores without formation of chemical bonds. Using NMR imaging the spatial distribution of water absorbed was visualized; preferable water pathways and influence of surface treatment on water-resistant properties were revealed. It was found that the surface rough treatment sufficiently improves the water absorption, but penetration of water molecules is still occurring only through the surfaces and it happens within a thin layer. PFG NMR technique revealed influence of pore structure on moisture–PCM interaction; it was found that additionally to strong hydrophobic properties of carbon fiber, the smaller total volume of pores sufficiently decrease the water uptake. Results achieved in this work demonstrate efficiency of NMR methods applied all together for investigation of PCM, and information obtained is practically important when designing advanced PCM with required properties. © 2016, Springer-Verlag Wien.

Аннотация: This paper introduces a semi-analytical method for calculating the Hall conductivity in the single-band approximation. The method goes beyond the linear response theory and thus, it formally imposes no limitation on the electric-field magnitude. It is shown that, when the Bloch frequency exceeds the cyclotron frequency, the Hall current decreases with increasing electric field. The obtained results can be directly applied to the cold Bose atoms in a 2D optical lattice, where the single-band approximation is well justified. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Аннотация: The current-voltage characteristics of a porous superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)Ca(2)Cu(3)O (x) (Bi2223) have been measured at temperatures in the range from 10 to 90 K in magnetic fields of 0-80 kOe. The experimental dependences have been analyzed within the model allowing for pinning by clusters of a normal phase with fractal boundaries, as well as the model taking into account phase transformations of vortex matter. It has been found that the electrical resistance of the superconductor material significantly increases at temperatures of 60-70 K over the entire range of magnetic fields under consideration without changing in the sign of the curvature of the dependence R(I). It has been assumed that this behavior is associated with the specific feature of the pinning in a highly porous high-temperature superconductor, which lies in the fractality of the distribution of pinning centers in a wide range of self-similarity scales. The studied material at the aforementioned temperatures is characterized by the melting of the vortex structure.

Аннотация: The band structure, spectral intensity, and position of the Fermi level in doped p-type La1-xMx2+ MnO3 manganites (M = Sr, Ca, Ba) is analyzed using the LDA + GBT method for calculating the electronic structure of systems with strong electron correlations, taking into account antiferro-orbital ordering and using the Kugel-Khomskii ideas and real spin S = 2. The results of the ferromagnetic phase reproduce the state of a spin half-metal with 100% spin polarization at T = 0, when the spectrum is of the metal type for a quasiparticle with one spin projection and of the dielectric type for the other. It is found that the valence band becomes approximately three times narrower upon a transition to the paramagnetic phase. For the paramagnetic phase, metal properties are observed because the Fermi level is located in the valence band for any nonzero x. The dielectrization effect at the Curie temperature is possible and must be accompanied by filling of d(x) orbitals upon doping. The effect itself is associated with strong electron correlations, and a complex structure of the top of the valence band is due to the Jahn-Teller effect in cubic materials. Аннотация: Inhomogeneous distribution of the pinning force in superconductor results in a magnetization asymmetry. A model considering the field distribution in superconductor was developed and symmetric and asymmetric magnetization loops of porous and textured Bi1.8Pb0.3Sr1.9Ca2Cu3Ox were fitted. Аннотация: A new model of the electron pressure anisotropy in the electron diffusion region in collisionless magnetic reconnection is presented for the case of antiparallel configuration of magnetic fields. The plasma anisotropy is investigated as source of collisionless dissipation. By separating electrons in the vicinity of the neutral line into two broad classes of inflowing and accelerating populations, it is possible to derive a simple closure for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. The appearance of these two electron populations near the neutral line is responsible for the anisotropy and collisionless dissipation in the magnetic reconnection. Particle-in-cell simulations verify the proposed model, confirming first the presence of two particle populations and second the analytical results for the off-diagonal electron pressure component. Furthermore, test-particle calculations are performed to compare our approach with the model of electron pressure anisotropy in the inner electron diffusion region by Fujimoto and Sydora [Phys. Аннотация: We report on the results of measurements of anisotropic resistivity of RBa(2)Cu(3)O(6 + x) (R = Tm, Lu) high-temperature superconducting single crystals in a wide range of doping levels, indicating a nontrivial effect of magnetic order on the electronic properties of cuprates. In particular, our results visually demonstrate the crossover from the state with moderate anisotropy of resistivity rho (c) /rho (ab) similar to 30 to a strongly anisotropic state with rho (c) /rho (ab) similar to 7 x 10(3) upon cooling as well as upon a decrease in the hole concentration in the CuO(2) planes. It is also shown that anisotropy is sensitive to the magnetic state of CuO(2) planes and attains its maximum value after the establishment of the long-range antiferromagnetic order. The results are discussed in the framework of the theory based on the t-t'-taEuro(3)-J model of CuO(2) layers taking into account strong electron correlations and short-range magnetic order. In this theory, anomalies of spin correlators and Fermi surface topology for a critical hole concentration of p* a parts per thousand 0.24 are demonstrated. The concentration dependence of the charge carrier energy indicates partial suppression of energy due to the emergence of a pseudogap at p < p*. This theory explains both the experimentally observed sensitivity of anisotropy in conductivity to the establishment of the antiferromagnetic order and the absence of anomalies in the temperature dependence of resistivity rho (ab) (T) in the vicinity of the N,el temperature.

Аннотация: The magnetization of cation-substituted CoxMn(1-x)S sulfides upon cooling in zero magnetic field and in a field in the temperature range 4-300 K has been measured and the resistance versus magnetic field (up to 10 kOe) dependences have been obtained. Magnetoresistance and temperature hysteresis of magnetization versus prehistory are found at the magnetic field H < 0.1 T and at T < 240 K. The interrelation between the magnetic and elastic subsystems of the CoxMn1-xS solid solutions has been established. A jump in the coefficient of thermal expansion is observed at the Neel temperature. The features of the physical properties are explained by orbital ordering. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the critical current of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 polycrystalline high-temperature superconductors subjected to annealing for different times and those of Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + BaPbO3 composites were measured. The results obtained were analyzed in terms of the Gunsenheimer-Schussler-Kummler theory considering the Andreev reflection of carriers in a "superconductor-normal metal-superconductor" (S-N-S) junction. Good agreement between the experimental and theoretical temperature dependences of the critical current over a wide temperature range for polycrystals with both natural and artificially created boundaries (composites) made it possible to estimate the effective length of grain boundaries in the high-temperature superconductors. It was revealed that the critical current density measured at 4.2 K is an exponential function of the length of grain boundaries in samples of both types.

Аннотация: A simplified model for the current-voltage characteristics of weak links is suggested. It is based on an approach considering the multiple Andreev reflection in a metallic Josephson junction. The model allows one to calculate the current-voltage characteristics of superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions with different thicknesses of normal layer at different temperatures. A hysteretic peculiarity of the V(I) dependence is described as a result of the negative differential resistance. The current-voltage characteristics of tin microbridges and high- T-c composite YBCO + BaPbO3 were computed.
