Аннотация: We develop a semiclassical method to determine the nonlinear dynamics of dissipative quantum optical systems in the limit of large number of photons N; it is based on the 1/N-expansion and the quantum-classical correspondence. The method is used to tackle two problems: the study of the dynamics of nonclassical state generation in higher order anharmonic dissipative oscillators and the establishment of the difference between the quantum and classical dynamics of the second-harmonic generation in a self-pulsing regime. In addressing the first problem, we obtain an explicit time dependence of the squeezing and the Fano factor for an arbitrary degree of anharmonism in the short-time approximation. For the second problem, we analytically find a characteristic time scale at which the quantum dynamics differs insignificantly from the classical one. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We examine the dynamics of a wave packet that initially corresponds to a coherent state in the model of a quantum rotator excited by a periodic sequence of kicks. This model is the main model of quantum chaos and allows for a transition from regular behavior to chaotic in the classical limit. By doing a numerical experiment we study the generation of squeezed states in quasiclassical conditions and in a time interval when quantum-classical correspondence is well-defined. We find that the degree of squeezing depends on the degree of local instability in the system and increases with the Chirikov classical stochasticity parameter. We also discuss the dependence of the degree of squeezing on the initial width of the packet, the problem of stability and observability of squeezed states in the transition to quantum chaos, and the dynamics of disintegration of wave packets in quantum chaos. Аннотация: We develop a method for the determination of the dynamics of dissipative quantum systems in the limit of large number of quanta N, based on the 1/N-expansion of Heidmann et al. [Opt. Commun. 54, 189 (1985)] and the quantum-classical correspondence. Using this method, we End analytically the dynamics of nonclassical states generation in the higher-order anharmonic dissipative oscillators for an arbitrary temperature of a reservoir. We show that the quantum correction to the classical motion increases with time quadratically up to some maximal value, which is dependent on the degree of nonlinearity and a damping constant, and then it decreases. Similarities and differences with the corresponding behavior of the quantum corrections to the classical motion in the Hamiltonian chaotic systems are discussed. We also compare our results obtained for some limiting cases with the results obtained by using other semiclassical tools and discuss the conditions for validity of our approach.

Аннотация: A one-dimensional ZrO2/SiO2 photonic crystal with a 4-n -pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) nematic defect layer was used to investigate the transmission spectra of light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the liquid-crystal director at different angles of incidence. The spectra of the photonic crystal were shown to split into four polarized components T-ij at oblique incidence. When the incident angle increased, the bandgap edges and the defect modes shifted towards short wavelengths, while the amplitudes of the defect modes increased for the transverse magnetic polarization and decreased for the transverse electric polarization. The observed discrepancy between the defect mode amplitudes in the center and near the edges of the photonic bandgap was found to be related to the radiation losses inside the defect layer of a non-ideal photonic crystal. The simulated transmission spectra obtained using recurrence relations and taking into account the decay of defect modes are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Аннотация: We consider dynamically controllable periodic structures (gratings), resulting from Raman interaction of a weak probe field with a standing-wave pump and a second control laser field in four-level atomic media of N type. The gratings under study are induced due to periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain in a standing pump field and fundamentally differ from the ones based on electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that spectral and transmission properties of these gratings can be controlled with the help of an additional weak field (control field) by varying its intensity or frequency. Small variations of the control field intensity can change the system from opaque to transparent and vice versa and this structure can operate as an all-optical transistor. Such a structure can also be used as a tunable nonlinear mirror with amplification.

Аннотация: A novel type of electromagnetically induced gratings based on the Raman nonlinearity in the field of standing pump waves are proposed. Unlike electromagnetically induced absorption gratings, these gratings are based on the spatial modulation of Raman susceptibility. We present a theoretical study of the optical response of such a spatial periodically modulated three-level atomic medium. It is shown that transmission and reflection of a probe Raman wave can be simultaneously amplified in the grating. Transmission and reflection spectra can be controlled by varying the pump field intensity. The basic mechanism responsible for all-optical control of transmission and reflection in the samples of Raman driven atoms are discussed. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: Using the data on dispersion of refractive indices in the visible region, the experimental values of the components L-j of the Lorentz tensor have been obtained for uniaxial (crystalline, oriented on a substrate, and stretched) films of conjugated polymers from nanometer to micrometer thicknesses. The dependence of the components L-j on the axial and planar orientations of macromolecules with respect to the optical axis of the film, technology of fabricating the films, and chemical structure of macromolecules has been elucidated. The correlation between the components L-j and the measured parameter. has been determined and the analytical dependence L-j(eta) for films with both types of macromolecular orientation has been established. Аннотация: Electrodynamic analysis of plasma oscillations in a spherical metal nanoparticle is performed. It is shown that typical reduction in the frequency and quality factor of the resonances with increasing nanoparticle radius fades if the mode number grows. Depending on the particle radius, the resonant enhancement of the electric field might considerably either increase or decrease with increasing mode number. (C) 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Аннотация: Two schemes of excitation of a Tamm plasmon polariton localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity have been investigated in the framework of the temporal coupled-mode theory. The parameters of the structure have been determined, which correspond to the critical coupling of the incident field with a Tamm plasmon polariton and, consequently, ensure the total absorption of the incident radiation by the structure. It has been established that the spectral width of the absorption line depends on the scheme of Tamm plasmon polariton excitation and the parameters of a nanocomposite film. The features of field localization at the Tamm plasmon polariton frequency for different excitation schemes have been examined. It has been demonstrated that such media can be used as narrowband absorbers based on Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the interface between a photonic crystal and a nanocomposite with near-zero effective permittivity.

Аннотация: We show that a circular periodic array of silicon dielectric cylinders supports nearly bound states in the continuum (BICs) propagating along the cylinders. These propagating nearly BICs with extremely large-Q factors are surrounded by resonant modes weakly leaking into the radiation continuum. We present leaky zones in the form of dispersion curves for complex eigenfrequencies dependent on propagation constant kz, with the wave vector directed along the cylinders in the vicinity of different types of BICs. Symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to squared propagation constant Γ∼k2z; the widths of non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs behave as Γ∼(kz−kc)2, where kc and non-symmetry-protected nearly BICs have the resonant width proportional to k4z. The latter propagating nearly BICs can serve for the transmission of a electromagnetic signal paving a way to a different type of optical fiber. We also demonstrate weakly leaking resonant modes which carry orbital angular momentum.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a directional photonic crystal waveguide that holds a nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes within the light propagation band. For the defect positioned on the center line of the waveguide, there are two ways to break the mirror symmetry with respect to either light intensity or light phase. The latter results in a giant vortex of the Poynting vector of the power current within the defect exceeding the input current by, at least, two orders of magnitude. We also consider the breaking of symmetry relative to the mirror reflection with respect to the cross-sectional axis of the waveguide when light is injected equally into both ends of the waveguide. This leads to different light outputs determined by the vorticity of the optical vortex.

Аннотация: We trace the Q factor of the resonant modes which are limited to bound states in the continuum (BICs) for N=∞ in the finite array of N dielectric spheres and disks. For the symmetry-protected BICs we observe the quadratic dependence of the Q factor on N for high-refractive-index particles, while for low-refractive-index particles there is an interplay between the quadratic and cubic dependencies. The Q factor of accidental BICs grows cubically with N. We show that a plane wave can excite these quasi-BICs for tuning of the angle of incidence.

Аннотация: We consider E-polarized bound states in the radiation continuum (BICs) in circular periodical arrays of N infinitely long dielectric rods. We find that each true BIC which occurs in an infinite linear array has its counterpart in the circular array as a near-BIC with extremely large quality factor. We argue analytically as well as numerically that the quality factor of the symmetry-protected near-BICs diverges as eλN, where λ is a material parameter dependent on the radius and the refraction index of the rods. By tuning of the radius of rods, we also find numerically non-symmetry-protected near-BICs. These near-BICs are localized with exponential accuracy outside the circular array, but fill the whole inner space of the array carrying orbital angular momentum.

Аннотация: We consider nonlinear effects in scattering of light by a periodic structure supporting optical bound states in the continuum. In the spectral vicinity of the bound states the scattered electromagnetic field is resonantly enhanced triggering optical bistability. Using coupled mode approach we derive a nonlinear equation for the amplitude of the resonant mode associated with the bound state. We show that such an equation for the isolated resonance can be easily solved yielding bistable solutions which are in quantitative agreement with the full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. The coupled mode approach allowed us to cast the the problem into the form of a driven nonlinear oscillator and analyze the onset of bistability under variation of the incident wave. The results presented drastically simplify the analysis nonlinear Maxwell's equations and, thus, can be instrumental in engineering optical response via bound states in the continuum.

Аннотация: We consider Bloch bound states in the radiation continuum in periodic arrays of dielectric spheres. It is demonstrated that the bound states are associated with phase singularities of the quasimode coupling strength. That makes the bound states topologically protected and, therefore, robust against any variation of parameters preserving the periodicity and rotational symmetry about the array axis. It is shown that under variation of parameters the bound states can only be destroyed by either annihilation of the topological charge or by migration to the sector of the parametric space where the second radiation channel is open.

Аннотация: We consider scattering of electromagnetic plane waves by a linear periodic array of dielectric spheres. For incident waves with circular polarization with frequency tuned to the bound states with orbital angular momentum in the radiation continuum, the spin angular momentum of the incident wave transfers into the orbital angular momentum. This, in turn, gives rise to giant vortical power currents rotating around the array. Incident wave with linear polarization with frequency tuned to the Bloch bound state in the continuum induces giant laminar power currents.

Аннотация: A scale-invariant theory of Raman scattering of light by fractal clusters is developed. The enhancement factor G(RS) of Raman scattering is shown to scale in terms of a properly chosen spectral variable X. The critical indices of the enhancement factor are found to be determined by the optical spectral dimension of the fractal. Numerical modeling is carried out and shown to support the analytical results obtained. The theory, which does not contain any adjustable parameters, agrees well with experimental data on surface-enhanced Raman scattering over a wide spectral range.

Аннотация: The existence of bound states in the continuum (BIC) manifests a general wave phenomenon first predicted in quantum mechanics by John von Neumann and Eugene Wigner [J. von Neumann and E. Wigner, Phys. Z. 30, 465 (1929)]. Today it is being actively explored in photonics, radiophysics, acoustics, and hydrodynamics. We report an experimental observation of an electromagnetic bound state in the radiation continuum in a one-dimensional array of dielectric particles. By measurement of the transmission spectra of the ceramic disk chain at GHz frequencies, we demonstrate how a resonant state in the vicinity of the center of the Brillouin zone turns into a symmetry-protected BIC with increase in the number of the disks. We estimate a number of the disks when the radiation losses become negligible in comparison to material absorption and, therefore, the chain could be considered practically as infinite. The presented analysis is supplemented by measurements of the near fields of the symmetry-protected BIC. All measurements are in a good agreement with the results of the numerical simulation and analytical model based on a tight-binding approximation. The obtained results provide useful guidelines for practical implementations of structures with bound states in the continuum that opens up horizons for the development of optical and radio-frequency metadevices.

Аннотация: Anomalous spectral shift of transmission peaks is observed in a Fabry-Pérot cavity filled with a chiral anisotropic medium. The effective refractive index value resides out of the interval between the ordinary and the extraordinary refractive indices. The spectral shift is explained by contribution of a geometric phase. The problem is solved analytically using the approximate Jones matrix method, numerically using the accurate Berreman method, and geometrically using the generalized Mauguin-Poincaré rolling cone method. The o-mode blueshift is measured for a 4-methoxybenzylidene-4′-n-butylaniline twisted-nematic layer inside the Fabry-Pérot cavity. The twist is electrically induced due to the homeoplanar-twisted configuration transition in an ionic-surfactant-doped liquid crystal layer. Experimental evidence confirms the validity of the theoretical model. © 2015 American Physical Society.
