Аннотация: Dielectric resonators are open systems whose eigenmodes couple to the radiation continuum resulting in nonzero radiation losses. For a long time, it was believed that only guided modes with frequencies below the light line were decoupled from the radiation continuum [1] . In the early 2000’s, several counterexamples of perfectly localized states – i.e. totally decoupled from the radiation continuum – at frequencies above the light line were proposed in dielectric gratings and photonic crystal waveguides [2] . Such states are known as bound states in the continuum (BIC).

Аннотация: It is shown that in the chloroplast periodic structure with a defect, the resonant absorption of light can be implemented. It is found that the resonant light absorption depends significantly on the position of a defect. In terms of the absorption of light energy, an asymmetric resonator is more efficient than a symmetric one.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BSCs) or embedded trapped modes in two- and three-dimensional acoustic axisymmetric duct-cavity structures. We demonstrate numerically that, under variation of the length of the cavity, multiple BSCs occur due to the Friedrich-Wintgen two-mode full destructive interference mechanism. The BSCs are detected by tracing the resonant widths to the points of the collapse of Fano resonances where one of the two resonant modes acquires infinite life-time. It is shown that the approach of the acoustic coupled mode theory cast in the truncated form of a two-mode approximation allows us to analytically predict the BSC frequencies and shape functions to a good accuracy in both two and three dimensions. © 2015 Cambridge University Press.

Аннотация: We consider bound states in the continuum (BICs) in low-contrast dielectric gratings. It is demonstrated that the BICs originate from the reduced guided modes on the effective dielectric slab with the permittivity equal to the average permittivity of the dielectric grating. In the case of isolated resonances, the positions of BICs can be found from two-wave dispersion relationships for guided leaky modes. In the case of the degeneracy between the two families of leaky modes, the system exhibits an avoided crossing of resonances. In the spectral vicinity of the avoided crossing the transmittance as well as the emergence of BICs is described in the framework of the generic formalism by Volya and Zelevinsky [Phys. Rev. C 67, 054322 ( 2003)] with a single fitting parameter.

Аннотация: We consider light scattering by two-dimensional arrays of high-index dielectric spheres arranged into a triangular lattice. It is demonstrated that in the case of a triple degeneracy of resonant leaky modes in the gamma point, the scattering spectra exhibit a complicated picture of Fano resonances with extremely narrow linewidth. The Fano features are explained through coupled-mode theory for a Dirac cone spectrum as a signature of optical bound states in the continuum (BIC). It is found that the standing wave in-gamma BIC induces a ring of off-gamma BICs due to different scaling laws for real and imaginary parts of the resonant eigenfrequencies in the Dirac cone spectrum. A quantitative theory of the spectra is proposed.

Аннотация: We consider optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) in periodic arrays of dielectric rods. The full classification of BICs in the above system is provided, including the modes propagating along the axes of the rods and bidirectional BICs propagating both along the axes of the rods and the axis of periodicity. It is shown that the leaky zones supporting the BICs generally have elliptically polarized far-field radiation patterns, with the polarization ellipses collapsing on approach to the BICs in momentum space. That allowed us to apply the concept of polarization singularities and demonstrate that the BICs possess a topological charge defined as the winding number of the polarization direction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 257401 (2014)]. It is found that the evolution of the BICs, including their creation and annihilation, under variation of geometric parameters is controlled by the topological charge. Three scenarios of such evolution for different leaky zones are described. Finally, it is shown that the topological properties of the BICs can be extracted from transmission spectra when the system is illuminated by a plane wave of circular polarization.

Аннотация: We consider two electric RLC resonance networks that are equivalent to quantum billiards. In a network of inductors grounded by capacitors, the eigenvalues of the quantum billiard correspond to the squared resonant frequencies. In a network of capacitors grounded by inductors, the eigenvalues of the billiard are given by the inverse of the squared resonant frequencies. In both cases, the local voltages play the role of the wave function of the quantum billiard. However, unlike for quantum billiards, there is a heat power because of the resistance of the inductors. In the equivalent chaotic billiards, we derive a distribution of the heat power which describes well the numerical statistics.

Аннотация: The article reports on light enhancement by structural resonances in linear periodic arrays of identical dielectric elements. As the basic elements both subwavelength spheres and rods with circular cross section have been considered. In either case it has been demonstrated numerically that high-Q structural resonant modes originated from bound states in the continuum enable near-field amplitude enhancement by factor of 10–25 in the red-to-near infrared range in lossy silicon. The asymptotic behavior of the Q-factor with the number of elements in the array is explained theoretically by analyzing quasi-bound states propagation bands. © 2017 Optical Society of America.

Ключевые слова (''Своб.индексиров.''): bound state in the continuum--fano resonance--nanophotonics
Аннотация: We demonstrate bound states in the radiation continuum (BSC) in a linear periodic array of dielectric spheres in air above the light cone. We classify the BSCs by orbital angular momentum m = 0,±1,±2 according to the rotational symmetry of the array, Bloch wave vector b directed along the array according to the translational symmetry, and polarization. The most simple symmetry protected BSCs have m = 0, β = 0 and occur in a wide range of the radius of the spheres and dielectric constant. More sophisticated BSCs with m ≠ 0, β = 0 exist only for a selected radius of spheres at fixed dielectric constant. We also find robust Bloch BSCs with β ≠ 0,m = 0. All BSCs reside within the first but below the other diffraction continua. We show that the BSCs can be easily detected by bright features in scattering of different plane waves by the array as dependent on type of the BSC. The symmetry protected TE/TM BSCs can be traced by collapsing Fano resonance in cross-sections of normally incident TE/TM plane waves. When plane wave with circular polarization with frequency tuned to the bound states with OAM illuminates the array the spin angular momentum of the incident wave transfers into the orbital angular momentum of the BSC. This, in turn, gives rise to giant vortical power currents rotating around the array. Incident wave with linear polarization with frequency tuned to the Bloch bound state in the continuum induces giant laminar power currents. At last, the plane wave with linear polarization incident under tilt relative to the axis of array excites Poynting currents spiralling around the array. It is demonstrated numerically that quasi-bound leaky modes of the array can propagate both stationary waves and light pulses to a distance of 60 wavelengths at the frequencies close to the bound states in the radiation continuum. A semi-analytical estimate for decay rates of the guided waves is found to match the numerical data to a good accuracy.

Аннотация: We consider nonlinear effects in scattering of light by a periodic structure supporting optical bound states in the continuum. In the spectral vicinity of the bound states the scattered electromagnetic field is resonantly enhanced triggering optical bistability. Using coupled mode approach we derive a nonlinear equation for the amplitude of the resonant mode associated with the bound state. We show that such an equation for the isolated resonance can be easily solved yielding bistable solutions which are in quantitative agreement with the full-wave solutions of Maxwell's equations. The coupled mode approach allowed us to cast the the problem into the form of a driven nonlinear oscillator and analyze the onset of bistability under variation of the incident wave. The results presented drastically simplify the analysis nonlinear Maxwell's equations and, thus, can be instrumental in engineering optical response via bound states in the continuum.

Аннотация: In this work we experimentally observe a symmetry protected optical bound state in the continuum(BIC) with zero angular momentum in 1D array of ceramic disks at GHz frequencies. We analyze the dependence of Q factor of BIC on the number of the disks and the level of the material losses. We confirmed theoretical prediction about quadratic growth of the Q factor with the number of the disks and its following saturation due to material losses.

Аннотация: We propose a single resonance coupled-mode approach to light scattering by dielectric solids of revolution. By using a biorthogonal decomposition of the S matrix found with the extended boundary condition method we derived all parameters required for application of the temporal coupled-mode theory in a closed form. The proposed approach allows for constructing a frequency-dependent Fano response due to a single resonance after the full-wave solution has been found at a single incident frequency.

Аннотация: We consider an optical response induced by bound states in the continuum (BICs) in arrays of dielectric spheres. By combining the quasi-mode expansion technique with coupled mode theory (CMT), we put forward a theory of the optical response by high-Q resonance surrounding BICs in momentum space. The central results are analytical expressions for the CMT parameters, which can be easily calculated from the eigenfrequencies and eigenvectors of the interaction matrix of the scattering systems. The results obtained are verified in comparison against exact numerical solutions to demonstrate that the CMT approximation is capable of reproducing Fano features in the spectral vicinity of the BIC. Based on the quasi-mode expansion technique, we derived the asymptotic scaling law for the CMT parameters in the vicinity of the Γ-point. It is rigorously demonstrated that the linewidth in the CMT approximation exhibits different asymptotic behavior depending on the symmetry of the BIC.

Аннотация: In this paper we propose an optimization procedure for quality-factor (Q-factor) enhancement in dielectric oligomers. The oligomers are introduced as linear periodic chains of dielectric elements the individual Q factors of which are optimized via multipolar conversion in an avoided crossing of two resonant eigenfrequencies. It is demonstrated that when such dielectric elements are assembled into an infinite periodic array the coupling between individual resonances gives rise to an in-Γ optical bound state in the continuum (BIC) unprotected by symmetry. By setting up the oligomers of finite numbers of dielectric elements we observe high quality resonances which occur as traces of the infinite array band structure. The resulting high quality resonances exhibit light localization spots of a few squared wavelengths with Q factors Q ˃10 4. The localization is provided by similarity of the field pattern to that of the BIC with the losses at the edges of the array suppressed due to an almost flat BIC host band. The scaling law of the Q factor against the dielectric permittivity is derived.

RESONANCE
Аннотация: We consider Bloch bound states in the radiation continuum in periodic arrays of dielectric spheres. It is demonstrated that the bound states are associated with phase singularities of the quasimode coupling strength. That makes the bound states topologically protected and, therefore, robust against any variation of parameters preserving the periodicity and rotational symmetry about the array axis. It is shown that under variation of parameters the bound states can only be destroyed by either annihilation of the topological charge or by migration to the sector of the parametric space where the second radiation channel is open.

Аннотация: We study the decay of bosonic many-body states in the triple-well Bose-Hubbard model where bosons in the central well can escape into a reservoir. For vanishing interparticle interaction this system supports a nondecaying many-body state which is the antisymmetric Bose-Einstein condensate with particles occupying only the edge wells. In the classical approach this quantum state corresponds to a symmetry-protected nondecaying state which is stable even at finite interaction below a certain intensity threshold. Here we demonstrate that despite the fact that the classical counterpart is stable the antisymmetric Bose-Einstein condensate is always metastable at finite interatomic interactions due to quantum fluctuations.

Аннотация: We suggest a simple scheme for creating a NOON state of repulsively interacting Bose atoms in the double-well potential. The protocol consists of two steps. First, by setting atom-atom interactions to zero, the system is driven to the upper excited state. Second, the interactions are slowly increased and, simultaneously, the interwell tunneling is decreased to zero. We analyze fidelity of the final state to the NOON state depending on the number of atoms, ramp rate, and fluctuations of the system parameters. It is shown that for a given fidelity the ramp rate scales algebraically with the number of atoms.

Аннотация: We analyze the energy spectrum of the three-site Bose-Hubbard model. It is shown that this spectrum is a mixture of the regular and irregular spectra associated with the regular and chaotic components of the classical Bose-Hubbard model. We find relative volumes of these components by using the pseudoclassical approach. Substituting these values in the Berry-Robnik distribution for the level spacing statistics we obtain good agreement with the numerical data.
