Аннотация: The Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in the transmission probability of a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring between two electrodes are considered numerically where a time-periodical flux gamma(t)=gamma+lambda cos omega t is applied. Such a flux simulates a phase-coherent inelastic scattering due to the absorption/emission processes of modulation quanta. An increase of alternating flux amplitude lambda drastically changes the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the transmission though the exact period remains phi(0)=hc/e. A frequency dependence of the transmission has abrupt steps at omega=(E-E(F))/n, caused by the locking of the transmission in the nth channel where EF is the Fermi level. Moreover, for transmission of a narrow wave packet the time-periodical flux gives rise to two effects. The first is a fractioning of the input wave packet by the ring in such a way that the output wave function consists of a few separate wave packets. Their number, distance apart, and height essentially depend on the static flux gamma. The second effect is a strong space squeezing of the output wave packet.

Аннотация: Transport properties of mesoscopic rings with applied external magnetic field are considered numerically. Rings have square and circular forms and a finite aspect ratio d/L where L is the ring size and d is the width of ring arms. The type of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations (ABO's) of the transmission substantially depends on the number of channels participating in the electron transmission. Moreover the aspect ratio and the geometrical form of the ring are important for the ABO's. In square rings with a small aspect ratio (d/L = 1/10) the transmission displays periodic ABO's in the region of applied magnetic field defined by the inequality infinity l(B) = ((h) over bar c/eB)(1/2)greater than or equal to d, while for rings with a large aspect ratio (d/L = 1/3) only the single-channel transmission has quasiperiodical ABO's. For the circular rings with small aspect ratios the quasiperiodic ABO's are observed all over the region of the applied magnetic field while for the rings with moderate aspect ratios only the multichannel transmission displays irregular ABO's. The probability current flow patterns demonstrate fine correspondence between the transmission and the vortex structure of current distributions in the rings. For single-channel transmission, electron currents are laminar. For multichannel transport, current flow patterns display a complicated convection pattern in the form of a vortex lattice. An elementary cell of the vortex lattice consists of a few vortices and antivortices and has a size of similar to d/f, where f is the number of channels of electron transmission in the ring. Application of the flux distorts the vortex lattice enormously, partially destroying it. Correspondingly the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the transmission become irregular.

Аннотация: We consider Aharonov-Bohm oscillations in a mesoscopic semiconductor ring threaded by both a constant magnetic flux and a time-dependent, resonant magnetic field with one or two frequencies. Working in the ballistic regime, we establish that the theory of ''quantum nonlinear resonance'' applies, and thus that this system represents a possible solid-state realization of ''quantum nonlinear resonance'' and ''quantum chaos.'' In particular, we investigate the behavior of the time-averaged electron energy at zero temperature in the regimes of (i) an isolated quantum nonlinear resonance and (ii) the transition to quantum chaos, when two quantum nonlinear resonances overlap. The time-averaged energy exhibits sharp resonant behavior as a function of the applied constant magnetic flux, and has a staircase dependence on the amplitude of the external time-dependent field. In the chaotic regime, the resonant behavior exhibits complex structure as a function of flux and frequency. We compare and contrast the quantum chaos expected in these mesoscopic ''solid-state atoms'' with that observed in Rydberg atoms in microwave fields, and discuss the prospects for experimental observation of the effects we predict.

Аннотация: We describe an effect of the generation of direct current which may arise in semiconductors or semiconductor microstructures due to a mixing of coherent electromagnetic radiations of commensurate frequencies. The effect is, in essence, due to a nonparabolicity of the electron energy bands and is stronger in systems where this nonparabolicity is greater. We have made exact calculations in the framework of the Kane model, applicable to narrow-gap semiconductors and the tight-binding model which we employ for a description of a semiconductor superlattice.

Аннотация: We discuss electron transport through a semiconductor superlattice subject to an electric field parallel to, and a magnetic field perpendicular to, the growth axis using a semiclassical balance equation model. We find that the current-voltage characteristic becomes multistable in a large magnetic field; furthermore, hot electrons display novel features in their current-voltage characteristic, including absolute negative conductivity and a spontaneously generated de current at zero bias. Аннотация: The effect of the manganese doping of vanadium monosulfide in a system of the V1-xMnxS (0 x less than or equal to 0.3) solid solutions on their structure and thermal, electrical, and magnetic properties has been investigated. The metal-dielectric transitions are revealed in the studied ranges of concentrations and temperatures. These transitions are accompanied by a change in the magnetic properties. It is demonstrated that the correlation in changes of the electrical and magnetic properties of the sulfides under investigation is characteristic of the metal-dielectric transitions in strongly correlated systems. Аннотация: For circular quantum dot (QD), taking into account the Razhba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), an exact energy spectrum is obtained. For a small SOI constant, the eigenfunctions of the QD are found. It is shown that the application of a radiation field with circular polarization removes the Kramers degeneracy of the QD eigenstates. Effective spin polarization of electrons transmitted through the QD owing to a radiation field with circular polarization is demonstrated. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: We consider the spontaneous creation of a dc voltage across a strongly coupled semiconductor superlattice subjected to THz radiation. We show that the dc voltage may be approximately proportional either to an integer or to a half-integer multiple of the frequency of the applied ac field, depending on the ratio of the characteristic scattering rates of conducting electrons. For the case of an ac field frequency less than the characteristic scattering rates, we demonstrate the generation of an unquantized dc voltage.

Аннотация: A theoretical technique which allows one to include contributions from nonorthogonality of the electron states in the leads connected to a tunneling junction is derived. The theory is applied to a single-barrier, tunneling structure and a simple expression for the time-dependent tunneling current is derived showing explicit dependence of the overlap. The overlap proves to be necessary for a better quantitative description of the tunneling current, and our theory reproduces experimental results substantially better compared to standard approaches.

Аннотация: It was found that high-temperature superconductor (HTSC) based composites of the 1-2-3 (YBCO) + dielectric and YBCO + normal metal types exhibit large magnetoresistances in weak magnetic fields in a broad temperature range. This behavior is qualitatively explained using the concept of the irreversibility line in HTSCs and the mechanism of thermal fluctuations in the network of weak bonds of the Josephson type realized in HTSC composites. The HTSC-based composites exhibit a much higher sensitivity (as compared to that in the usual HTSC ceramics) to weak magnetic fields (below 300 Oe) at liquid-nitrogen temperatures, which is important for practical applications. Аннотация: Three issues are analyzed in the physics of time-dependent tunneling current through a quantum dot with strongly correlated electrons coupled to two external contact leads: (i) nonorthogonality of the states of electrons in the leads and in the quantum dot, (ii) non-Fermi statistics of the excitations in the quantum dot, and iii) kinematic shift of the quantum dot levels. The contributions from nonorthogonality effectively decrease the mixing interaction between the leads and the quantum dot and the width of the quantum dot level whereas the Gibbs statistics slightly changes the spectral weights of quantum dot levels, and decreases the widths, but does not introduce drastical changes to the current. The kinematic interactions are taken into account within the loop correction. For the case of block signal, the time-dependent current shows oscillations starting at the onset and termination of the bias voltage pulse.

Аннотация: We analyze the transport phenomena of two-dimensional quantum billiards with convex boundary of different shape. The quantum mechanical analysis is performed by means of the poles of the S matrix while the classical analysis is based on the motion of a free particle inside the cavity along trajectories with a different number of bounces at the boundary. The value of the conductance depends on the manner in which the leads are attached to the cavity. The Fourier transform of the transmission amplitudes is compared with the length of the classical paths. There is good agreement between classical and quantum mechanical results when the conductance is achieved mainly by special short-lived states such as whispering gallery modes and bouncing ball modes. In these cases, also the localization of the wave functions agrees with the picture of the classical paths. The S matrix is calculated classically and compared with the transmission coefficients of the quantum mechanical calculations for five modes in each lead. The number of modes coupled to the special states is effectively reduced.

Аннотация: We study spin-dependent electron transmission through one- and two-dimensional curved waveguides and quantum dots with account of spin-orbit interaction. We prove that for a transmission through an arbitrary structure there is no spin polarization provided the electron transmits in an isolated energy subband and only two leads are attached to the structure. In particular there is no spin polarization in the one-dimensional wire, for which a spin-dependent solution is found analytically. The solution demonstrates the spin evolution as dependent on a length of wire. The numerical solution for transmission of electrons through the two-dimensional curved waveguides coincides with the solution for the one-dimensional wire if the energy of electron is within the first energy subband. In the vicinity of edges of the energy subbands there are sharp anomalies of spin flipping.

Аннотация: The temperature evolution of the current-voltage (I-U) characteristic of a contact of the break-junction type with direct conduction is investigated on a polycrystalline HTSC of the Y-Ba-Cu-O system. The experimental I-U characteristics possessing a hysteresis are correctly described in the framework of the Kummel-Nicolsky theory for an S-N-S contact (S stands for a superconductor; N, for a normal metal) in which the Andreev reflection of quasiparticles from the N-S interface is considered. It is shown that the shape of the I-U curve, as well as the existence of a hysteresis, is determined by the ratio of the number of "long" and "short" intergranular boundaries in the polycrystal under investigation. The coincidence of the calculated and experimental I-U curves made it possible to estimate the effective length of "natural" intergranular boundaries in polycrystalline HTSC materials. The estimate is obtained from the experimental temperature dependence of the critical current in the sample under investigation. (C) 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: An approach is proposed to evaluate the average velocities of adsorbate molecules in one-dimensional nanopore, when quantum tunneling between neighboring potential minima leads to nonzero velocity. The approach is used to calculate the hydrogen isotope molecule (H-2, D-2, T-2) velocities in ultrathin carbon single-wall nanotubes (SWNT) (3, 3) and (6, 0). It is shown that the isotope mass difference leads to large differences of the quantum tunneling value and large differences of the average molecule velocities, especially inside the tube (6, 0). It is shown that different tube chirality leads to drastically different velocities of adsorbate molecules, even if the diameters of both nanotubes do not differ significantly.

Аннотация: A model is proposed for calculating the thermodynamic functions and the equilibrium density of a one-dimensional chain of molecules (atoms) adsorbed inside a narrow nanotube. The model considers both the interaction between introduced atoms (molecules) and their interaction with the nanotube walls. The quantum-mechanical effects resulting in discrete energy levels of a particle and in its smeared position between neighbors are taken into account. In calculating the free energy at a nonzero temperature, the phonon contribution and the particle transitions to excited levels are considered. The model is applied to calculate the thermodynamic parameters of adsorbed hydrogen molecules inside extremely narrow single-wall carbon nanotubes of the (3,3) and (6,0) type. It is shown that external pressure gives rise to a sequence of first-order phase transitions, which change the density of adsorbed hydrogen molecules. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

Аннотация: It is shown that non-Heisenberg exchange interaction should be taken into account to reproduce the magnetic phase diagram of La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3) (A = Ca, Sr) using only effective exchange parameters and spins. The formation of the four-spin exchange arises from carrier hopping and coincides with the critical concentration metal-dielectric transition. The two- and four-spin exchange parameters are determined by Monte Carlo simulations.

Аннотация: By using a simple model we consider single-channel transmission through a double quantum dot that consists of two single dots coupled by a wire of finite length L. Each of the two single dots is characterized by a few energy levels only, and the wire is assumed to have only one level whose energy depends on the length L. The transmission is described by using S matrix theory and the effective non-Hermitian Hamilton operator H-eff of the system. The decay widths of the eigenstates of H-eff depend strongly on energy. The model explains the origin of the transmission zeros of the double dot that is considered by us. Mostly, they are caused by (destructive) interferences between neighboring levels and are of first order. When, however, both single dots are identical and their transmission zeros are of first order, those of the double dot are of second order. First-order transmission zeros cause phase jumps of the transmission amplitude by pi, while there are no phase jumps related to second-order transmission zeros. In this latter case, a phase jump occurs due to the fact that the width of one of the states vanishes when crossing the energy of the transmission zero. The parameter dependence of the widths of the resonance states is determined by the spectral properties of the two single dots.
