Аннотация:
The authors propose a way of reconstructing the Raman tensor by studying the angular dependences of the intensities of the Raman lines of unoriented microcrystals. The technique is verified using familiar calomel Hg2Cl2 crystals. It is shown that the lines on DUT-8 (Ni) crystals indicating phases with open and closed pores have different types of symmetries. The technique can be used to reconstruct the Raman tensor for any unoriented crystalline sample.

Аннотация:
The ground state of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet having spins S = 1/2 and interacting with acoustic phonons is investigated in the nonadiabatic approximation using the quantum-mechanical Monte Carlo method. The critical parameters of the spin-phonon coupling, corresponding to the formation of bound spin-phonon excitations, crystal
symmetry
lowering, and the emergence of a gap in the spin excitation spectrum, as well as the antiferromagnet-quantum spin liquid transition, are determined. The orthorhombicity parameter, the sublattice magnetization, the violation of the spherical
symmetry
of spin-spin correlation functions, and the magnetic moment in Gd2CuO4 and Eu2CuO4 are calculated. (C) 2003 MAIK "Nauka / Interperiodica".

The two-dimensional (2D) Heisenberg model with anisotropic exchange (Delta = 1 - J(x)/J(z)) and with negative next nearest neighbor exchange (J(2)) with S = 1/2 is investigated by using the quantum-mechanical Monte-Carlo method. The energy, magnetic moment at a site, heat capacity, and spin-spin correlation functions are calculated. The stability regions for Neel ordering of spins as well as the strip-phase and gapless quantum spin liquid are determined in the interval Delta/2 less than or equal to J(2)/ J(1)less than or equal to 1/(2 Delta). Аннотация:
The problems on the relation of the mean effective molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar to the long-range orientational order of molecules (the optical anisotropy of the medium) in uniaxial and biaxial liquid crystals, the local anisotropy on mesoscopic scales, and the anisotropy of the Lorentz tensor L and the local-field tensor f are formulated and solved. It is demonstrated that the presence of the long-range orientational order of molecules in liquid crystals imposes limitations from below on the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar, which differs for uniaxial and biaxial liquid crystals. The relation between the local anisotropy and the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar is investigated for calamitic and discotic uniaxial liquid crystals consisting of lath- and disk-shaped molecules. These liquid crystals with identical macroscopic
symmetry
differ in the local anisotropy and the relationships between the components L(parallel to)
L(perpendicular to,) f(parallel to) > f(perpendicular to) (discotic) for an electric field oriented parallel and perpendicular to the director. The limitations from below and above on the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar due to the anisotropy of the tensors L and f are established for liquid crystals of both types. These limitations indicate that the molecular polarizability (gamma) over bar depends on the phase state and the temperature. The factors responsible for the nonphysical consequences of the local-field models based on the approximation (gamma) over bar = const are revealed. The theoretical inferences are confirmed by the experimental data for a number of calamitic nematic liquid crystals with different values of birefringence and the discotic liquid crystal Col(ho).

Аннотация:
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been demonstrated as a powerful tool for trapping acoustic fields in an acoustic resonator. It has been widely recognized that
symmetry
-protected (SP) BICs result from
symmetry
incompatibility of some eigenmodes of a resonator with propagating modes of waveguides. The most typical example of SP BIC is the odd eigenmode of the resonator with the eigenfrequency embedded into the propagating band of even propagating eigenmodes of the waveguide. In this work, we consider a more sophisticated case of an acoustic cuboid resonator that is opened by the attachment of two cylindrical waveguides. We show that BICs can be sustained in an open acoustic resonator with reduced
symmetry
. For symmetrical positions of waveguides, the eigenmodes of the cuboid can also be classified as SP BICs and show different stability against the shifts of waveguides from the positions of
symmetry
of the cuboid. We fabricate a series of coupled waveguide resonators and experimentally verify the existence of these BICs by identifying the vanished linewidth of Fano resonance in transmission spectra. Besides, we also show that evanescent modes of waveguides play a role in the formation of BICs in a nonaxisymmetric waveguide-resonator system by tuning the angle θ between two waveguides. Consequently, the eigenmodes remain SP BICs for θ = 0° and θ = 180° but convert into accidental BICs at θ ≈ 85° or θ ≈ 275°. Such accidental BICs are also experimentally verified. Our results enrich the understanding of SP BICs and accidental BICs, and provide alternative methods of routing acoustic waves and designing acoustic devices requiring fine spectrum features, such as filters and sensors.

We report on the emergence of new lines in the optical spectrum of the PrFe3(BO3)(4) single crystal at the magnetic ordering temperature. The transitions between singlet crystal-field sublevels of Pr3+ ion with the same transformational properties, strictly forbidden for the trigonal D-3 point
symmetry
of this ion in PrFe3(BO3)(4), appear below the Neel temperature and grow in intensity as a square of the order parameter. We show that the phenomenon originates from the mixing of wave functions of different Pr3+ sublevels by the Pr-Fe exchange interaction.

We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of

Аннотация:
We consider two electric RLC resonance networks that are equivalent to quantum billiards. In a network of inductors grounded by capacitors, the eigenvalues of the quantum billiard correspond to the squared resonant frequencies. In a network of capacitors grounded by inductors, the eigenvalues of the billiard are given by the inverse of the squared resonant frequencies. In both cases, the local voltages play the role of the wave function of the quantum billiard. However, unlike for quantum billiards, there is a heat power because of the resistance of the inductors. In the equivalent chaotic billiards, we derive a distribution of the heat power which describes well the numerical statistics.

Аннотация:
We consider light transmission in a directional photonic crystal waveguide that holds a nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes within the light propagation band. For the defect positioned on the center line of the waveguide, there are two ways to break the mirror
symmetry
with respect to either light intensity or light phase. The latter results in a giant vortex of the Poynting vector of the power current within the defect exceeding the input current by, at least, two orders of magnitude. We also consider the breaking of
symmetry
relative to the mirror reflection with respect to the cross-sectional axis of the waveguide when light is injected equally into both ends of the waveguide. This leads to different light outputs determined by the vorticity of the optical vortex.

We consider light transmission in 2D photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical nonlinear defects positioned symmetrically aside the waveguide. We show that with growth of injected light power there is a breaking of
symmetry
by two ways. In the first way the
symmetry
is broken because of different light intensities at the defects. In the second way the intensities at the defects are equaled but phases of complex amplitudes are different. That results in a vortical power flow between the defects similar to the DC Josephson effect if the input power over the waveguide is applied and the defects are coupled. As application of these phenomena we consider the
symmetry
breaking for the light transmission in a T-shaped photonic waveguide with two nonlinear defects. We demonstrate as this phenomenon can be explored for all-optical switching of light transmission from the left output waveguide to the right one by application of input pulses. Finally we consider the
symmetry
breaking in the waveguide coupled with single defect presented however by two dipole modes.

Аннотация:
A rectangular microwave resonator filled with ferrite with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is considered. It is shown that this task can be reduced to an empty rhombus resonator with the vertex angle defined by an external magnetic field, provided that the magnetic anisotropy of the ferrite is strong. Therefore, the statistics of eigenfrequencies for TM modes is described by the Brody or semi-Poisson distribution with some exceptional cases.

Аннотация:
Using coupled mode theory we consider transmission in a T-shaped waveguide coupled with two identical symmetrically positioned nonlinear micro-cavities with mirror
symmetry
. For input power injected into the central waveguide we show the existence of a
symmetry
breaking solution which is a result of mixing of the symmetrical input wave with an antisymmetric standing wave in the Fabry-Perot interferometer. With growth of the input power, a feature in the form of loops arises in the solution which originates from bistability in the transmission in the output left/right waveguide coupled with the first/second nonlinear cavity. The domains of stability of the solution are found. The breaking of mirror
symmetry
gives rise to nonsymmetrical left and right outputs. We demonstrate that this phenomenon can be explored for all-optical switching of light transmission from the left output waveguide to the right one by application of input pulses.

We consider light transmission in a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal waveguide coupled with two identical nonlinear defects positioned symmetrically aside the waveguide. With the coupled mode theory, we show three scenarios for the transmission. The first one inherits the linear case and preserves the
symmetry
. In the second scenario, the
symmetry
is broken because of different light intensities at the defects. In the third scenario, the intensities at the defects are equal but phases of complex amplitudes are different. That results in a vortical power flow between the defects similar to the dc Josephson effect if the input power over the waveguide is applied and the defects are coupled. All of these phenomena agree well with computations based on an expansion of the electromagnetic field into optimally adapted photonic Wannier functions in a 2D photonic crystal.

We consider light transmission in a T-shaped photonic waveguide coupled with two identical symmetrically positioned nonlinear microcavities. We present two types of
symmetry
breaking. The first one is a result of mixing of the symmetric input wave with antisymmetric bound states in the Fabry-Perot interferometer architecture. Similarly, the second mechanism of the
symmetry
breaking is the result of mixing the symmetrical input wave with the antibonding bound state in a straight waveguide coupled with two cavities positioned perpendicular to the waveguide. In both cases the mixing is due to nonlinearity. In turn, the
symmetry
-breaking solutions give rise to nonsymmetrical outputs in the T-shape waveguide. These effects are directly demonstrated by the electromagnetic field solutions which are complimented by coupled mode theory for the light transmission.
